Would you still be alive if you lived in the 16th century?

I would have died aged 7 from appendicitis. If not then childbirth or an infected tooth would have finished me off in my early 20's.

I would have died from lymphoma age 10, a kidney infection in my 20’s and during my first pregnancy.

harrietm87 · 30/12/2024 22:29

I’d have made it to 37 and then died 4 weeks ago due to massive blood loss during a miscarriage.

Blinky21 · 30/12/2024 22:29

I'd still be around, never had surgery, serious illness or children

Are you a werewolf?

I have PCOS and had lots of teeth.

My werewolf status is mostly hidden by tweezers and laser treatment. My teeth were sorted by the orthodontist at the earliest opportunity.

How did women go along with having a child knowing what they did back then. How many poor women had no choice having sex with husbands and then pregnancy and felt terrified by the odds against them.
I would have wanted to avoid and preserve my life at all costs.

I must go research any stats on this, fascinating.

No choice I imagine . Women relied on living with a man - which would have meant sex, pregnancy and childbirth.

As a single woman you would probably be considered a witch.
Although there were probably servant roles for single women - or you could join a convent!

Astrabees · 30/12/2024 22:38

Yes, if I’d survived my own birth I think I would. I have high blood pressure though so I wouldn’t expect to live to a great age without medication.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 30/12/2024 22:40

Alive I reckon, can't name any incident that would have killed me

Statistically not as many people could have died in childhood/ childbirth as are saying they would, here. About 2/3 to 1/2 of people survived to age 18 and of those, about half survived into what we would now consider retirement age (60+)

That said, complications in childbirth are much lower if you start giving birth in your 20s as they would have back then

gano · 30/12/2024 22:41

I may have died in childbirth at 33. Dd was breach, so I had a planned c-section. She may have turned, or I might have managed, but maybe not.

Letstheriveranswer · 30/12/2024 22:41

Asthma would have got me, if I survived that and didn't die in childbirth my thyroid condition would have finished me off by my late 40's.

Or maybe I'd have been exposed as a lesbian and burned as a witch. On balance, I do prefer the 21st century! I think our food is probably nicer too, and less halitosis.

TopshopCropTop · 30/12/2024 22:41

Would have died at 2 weeks old from a hole in my heart!

weareallcats · 30/12/2024 22:42

I’m not sure I would have got through my own birth tbh 😬. What is more frightening is that my two eldest dc would probably have died at birth/in infancy. I had a very bad chest infection in my 30’s - not convinced I’d have got through that without antibiotics.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 30/12/2024 22:42

I would have been a full-term stillbirth. The cord was wrapped around my neck and my mum had pre-eclampsia.

Had I survived that, a kidney infection would have taken me out in my mid-teens.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/12/2024 22:43

No, I was born 2 months early.
Assorted childhood illnesses, many infections dealt with by 20th century antibiotics
hyperemisis in both pregnancies

Bad history makes the baby Jesus cry. Or something.

A substantial proportion of the population were single, and many never married, men and women. Women didn't rely on living with men. Why on earth anyone would consider single women to be witches I don't follow?

I find this stuff really depressing.

ladygindiva · 30/12/2024 22:44

I would have died of quinsey ( had it twice, severely) or if not then childbirth with my breech twins .

Needafriend14 · 30/12/2024 22:44

I would have been burnt at the stake or in a lunatic asylum.
I have epilepsy.

Superhansrantowindsor · 30/12/2024 22:45

I would have died of hyperemisis at age 25.

jackstini · 30/12/2024 22:45

Nope - dd and I would have died when I could not dilate to give birth

jmh740 · 30/12/2024 22:46

I'd have died either from diabetes or childbirth, have had 3 10lb babies none of them would have survived either

kikisparks · 30/12/2024 22:47

I was a 2 week late induced forceps delivery, came out blue and think there was meconium in the water so not sure I’d have been born alive.

Had an EMCS with DD but then that was after an induction and so if I wasn’t induced who knows if I’d have needed assistance.

rosydreams · 30/12/2024 22:47

i was born blue cord wrapped round my neck no heartbeat i was very lucky .I would not have taken my first breath if it wasn't for this country's health care. Our nhs may not be the best but its saved my bacon many times

many of us would have died before the age of 5 due to lack of vaccines and health checks or even lack of clean water .over the last 100 or so years infant mortality has been brought down by a incredible amount

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 30/12/2024 22:48

I've been very lucky health wise, never had anything that would have been life threatening. As an extremely plain woman who talks to animals, with no interest whatsoever in having a husband, I would most certainly have been condemned as a witch in the 17th century! I'm not sure how that compares with the 16th century.

Jl2014 · 30/12/2024 22:49

Id be dead from either childbirth or sepsis. Scary

bryceQ · 30/12/2024 22:51

At the peak of the witch trials in England, around 100 women were "found guilty" - that's out of 4 million.

Every single woman, or woman with an "abnormality" was not found guilty of witchcraft!

Not just the tudors have some great podcasts on this topic!

AliceMcK · 30/12/2024 22:55

Doubtful, if I’d been born it would have involved my mother surviving childhood meningitis and trauma blood loss giving birth to my older brother, then needing a c section for me. If that had happened then whooping cough would have got me at 9 months old.

a lot of my relatives didn’t even survive childhood in the 20th century, 12 of my DFs siblings died in infancy early childhood due to malnutrition and lack of medical care.
