Do you get a bonus in your job?

thefedupdunlop · 29/12/2024 20:17

A very nosey question but if you receive a bonus in work what is your job and how much is your bonus?

I work in retail so I never get bonus- it's not a thing for shop floor staff I don't believe

I work as a Press Officer in a large corporation and get a 10pc annual bonus, so about £6k. Not massive but a nice extra. My base is good for my mid-seniority level and we get an excellent pension so I’m happy.

AwakeNotThruChoice · 29/12/2024 21:15

Work in Finance. In November we get 2 x monthly wage

LongDarkTeatime · 29/12/2024 21:17

😂 NHS so not on your Nelly.
Plus recently informed there’s no more budget for stationary so have to buy all pads and pens ourselves from our now 25% pay degraded salaries (was 30% before the 5% back earlier this year)
When younger worked a couple of years at a company and we got a paid for Christmas dinner and small pressie, it was lovely 😁

Imisschocolate17 · 29/12/2024 21:17

My "bonus" this year is 66% of my base salary - so yes it's really good this year, BUT.... it's not guaranteed, I spend all year not knowing what if anything it will be, it can vary dramatically and the base salary would need to be higher if the pay structure was different. It's a bit of a deliberate fudge really. I'd rather a more balanced set up and no bonus.

Dueanamechange2025 · 29/12/2024 21:18

Private sector, senior admin role. Base bonus is 10% of salary so approx £5k this is paid as 30% my performance and 70% company performance. I can get up to 125% of my bonus if I got a top performer rating and the company over performs. Last year company element was paid at 110%, year before it was at 90%.
The percentage of salary depends on role and level, some people have up to 50% bonus (VPs / C-Suite).

Imisschocolate17 · 29/12/2024 21:18

The staff all get a profit related bonus too, pays out up to around a months wages worth and everyone gets the same base figure for it then prorate to how many hours they work - this seems quite fair as means the lowest admin staff full time get the same as the far more senior full time so reflects the overall team approach

MidnightPatrol · 29/12/2024 21:21

I’d say larger bonuses tend to be quite sector-specific.

Finance, law, some sales.

TBH a lot of the time it means the employee is shouldering the risk rather than the employer, as it means a lower base salary throughout the year!

Zanatdy · 29/12/2024 21:21

Not a bonus as such as i’ public sector but everyone is allocated a bonus pot depending on grade and how much you get is down to your manager and how well you perform. It’s on a rolling 12 month calendar and I am always on 100% of mine. It’s around 2.5k I think, and I prefer it in vouchers as that’s tax free otherwise I lose 40-50% immediately if done via pay.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 29/12/2024 21:22

I work in finance and pretty senior. Bonus up to 100% salary but usually about 40-70% depending on company and personal performance. Was nil in Covid though so not guaranteed.

Also 50% of it is deferred for 3 years so used to lock you in....

SlinkyDog1 · 29/12/2024 21:22

Tequilamockinbird · 29/12/2024 20:33

Yes, I'm in a private sector managerial role and get anywhere between £15k-£20k per year depending on how well my team and the company overall do against our targets. I lose 40% of it to the taxman though.

@Tequilamockinbird Just an idea but are you able to put it in your pension to save losing that much on being taxed?

CleverMintHedgehog · 29/12/2024 21:24

Up to 25% of annual salary - usually around 80% - 85% of that, unless it was an amazing year performance-wise. Next grade is getting 30% max, more senior who knows haha.
It’s the first time I’m getting a sizeable bonus, previously was £200 or so - or nothing!

MaggieBsBoat · 29/12/2024 21:25

My highest bonus was 1k which I used to think was ok, but next year my OH will get 140k bonus after tax. I’m suffering serious sour grapes as of course that’s his savings. Boooooo

Microgal · 29/12/2024 21:27

Private sector….not senior at all. I get 8% every year which I can take in cash, buy shares or put into pension. I usually do a mix of the latter. To me it doesn’t really exist so I make it work for me as long as I can

memoriesofamiga · 29/12/2024 21:27

Public sector here so no don't get a bonus. My question would be is there anyone who works in the public sector who does get a bonus? Or is it a private sector thing

Idontjetwashthefucker · 29/12/2024 21:30

30 pounds for me

unsync · 29/12/2024 21:30

I'm an unpaid carer. I get £81.90 per week for caring for someone from 07.30 through to 23.00, 7 days a week, month in month out. I get a £10 Christmas bonus. Woohoo.

Whatanidiot123 · 29/12/2024 21:34

Yes I do - typically around 20% of my salary but varies depending on how the company performs and how I am rated. Find out in Jan - Feb.

Last year it was pretty low, only half the usual pot. I paid the lot into my pension which felt peak adult. I lose 40% plus to the taxman otherwise as my salary is in the tax trap bracket.

Thewrongdoor · 29/12/2024 21:34

No, never had a job where there was a bonus. I’m private sector. Same with DH.

He’s a CTO in a tech firm.
ironically I earn really well but my bonus is almost nonexistent. Annoying.

greengreyblue · 29/12/2024 20:45

These threads make you feel proper shit if you work in the public sector. 🙄

I've worked in private sector roles for my entire working life and don't get a bonus either. I'm astounded by what some people are getting.

Onthetubetoday · 29/12/2024 21:41

I get around 20% of my salary as a minimum and as based on business performance, this % can increase or even decrease (but that’s never happened). Individual performance isn’t a factor in the calculation but your level is.
Also, if you’re a super performer, you get an additional 10% of salary plus shares.

It all goes into my pension so I never see it. In my earlier years, it went towards saving for a house. I’ve never spent it on something random like handbag/jewellery/holiday.

I’ve been getting it for around 20 or so years now so don’t get excited about it. HMRC wanting to take a good whack of it is the reason for adding it to my pension and trying to keep under next tax band so I don’t lose my personal tax allowance.

edited to add I work in a pharma company.

Amiokay · 29/12/2024 21:42

12% but not guaranteed so I can’t really hang any hope on it! Husband gets 100% of his salary as his and it always seems to come through but obviously after tax you’re left with 50% of that and he’s really careful about putting money aside for his self assessment/tax return. I should probably do the same but clueless about tax.

Mumof1andacat · 29/12/2024 21:45

No I work for the nhs. Our consultants we work all clubbed together and got us some Christmas presents though....
