Do you get a bonus in your job?

thefedupdunlop · 29/12/2024 20:17

A very nosey question but if you receive a bonus in work what is your job and how much is your bonus?

I work in retail so I never get bonus- it's not a thing for shop floor staff I don't believe

Self employed and in December/Jan more people walk out without paying so it’s sort of like an anti-bonus 😂

MurdoMunro · 29/12/2024 20:40

Public sector. Ha! Could you imagine what the Daily Mail (or mumsnet even) would say if we got bonuses 😆

I’ve brought in excess of £50K to my service in the last six weeks BTW. I’m flippin good at what I do and there ain’t no-one else in my v large authority qualified to do my job. I SHOULD get a bonus. In the private sector I used to get them for doing waaaaay less, nothing even, just get on with my job, company does well, boom, bonus. We’re very weird about public v private sector renumeration.

greengreyblue · 29/12/2024 20:41

Teaching Assirant . My bonus is a few candles and chocolates from parents at Christmas and end of term. DH gets a £100 John Lewis voucher.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/12/2024 20:42

Arms length public body - we can get discretionary one off individual bonus payments throughout the year for good performance or a particular project - ranging from £50 - £1000.

Every year, if we hit all of our targets a bonus pot is agreed and everyone in the organisation gets a fixed sum (usually a percentage of the median point of their salary band). On average it is about £1500 per person.

IceCreamMundae · 29/12/2024 20:42

No. I’m a contractor, and have a good rate, but the downside is no sick pay, maternity, bonuses, or holiday pay.

knackeredknCkered · 29/12/2024 20:44

Absolutely diddly squat! Worked Christmas Day …great to feel appreciated!!

greengreyblue · 29/12/2024 20:45

These threads make you feel proper shit if you work in the public sector. 🙄

I work in Finance/Tech for a startup in a pretty senior role, and get a bonus that has worked out about 150% of my annual salary - sounds out of this world amazing but in reality it's not at all guaranteed and my base salary would be far higher if I worked elsewhere. It's a tradeoff for the risk in working for a company that could easily go bust!

@WhimsicalGubbins76 this sounds familiar - I used to work in retail management and got something like 6% and we were all made to feel grateful and unworthy for that. Every year sitting through the 'I fought so hard to get this for you!' From the area manager taking home 60%+

haha! Yes! I remember that speech so well. I ended up marrying the guy who gave me that speech 🤣 so I eventually got my hands on their handsome bonus’ 🤣

Swings and roundabouts though. Public sector get better pensions, sick pay etc.

wineandsunshine · 29/12/2024 20:49

@blackrabbitwhiterabbit - same here!

However we do get the bonus of knowing that we make a difference...!

That's what I'm telling myself whilst reading this thread 🙈

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/12/2024 20:50

Cybersecurity senior leadership for a US company, bonus scheme is up to 20% annual salary, they also occasionally do project related bonuses so this financial year I got my annual salary plus a £15k one-off for successful project completion.

TY78910 · 29/12/2024 20:51

I get shares in the business as a 'bonus'. DH gets monetary. It's all lovely on paper until the tax man comes 😂

AutoP1lot · 29/12/2024 20:53

Small private business, middle manager level (above average pay but not mega money).
I've always had a payrise at least in line with inflation and a couple of £k bonus Very happy with that.

dinmin · 29/12/2024 20:54

Nope. Joined a start up with promise of “up to 25%”. Of course that “up to” turned out to be 0. So every company might as well say that…

NewGreenDuck · 29/12/2024 20:56

No.. I worked in the public sector all my adult life. No bonus, no perks, I did a very responsible job and never earned more that 26,000. In adittion I wasn't allowed to take gifts.
The only good thing is my pension, final salary scheme.

Cherrypickled · 29/12/2024 20:56

Nothing, not a tub of sweets or fuck all. Public sector.

Ach. Someone will be along soon enough to say “get a job in the private sector and do some proper work, then you’ll earn your bonus’ soon enough. For the retail people it will be ‘pull your finger out and get a promotion’ and for the SAHMs something like ‘well you should’ve picked someone more successful to breed with’. Shall we make a bingo game of it? As long as the prize is valued less than £25 and we declare it we should get away with it 😆

I hated my private sector job, it was treadmill of nonsense that served no-one. I deserve better renumeration but as similar said above by @wineandsunshine I have great satisfaction in spending my productive years doing something useful.

It's must be so exciting knowing you're getting handed a load of cash on top of your wages. I can just about cover my rent lol good on you all though, you've all worked hard to get where you are so fair play

I doubt they work any harder than the rest of us do or have done.

i hate this attitude, ive worked 60 plus hours in jobs before in management roles, for not great money and certainly no bonuses.

I work 40 hour weeks for poor pay now

ShinySilverThreads · 29/12/2024 21:01

Private sector doesn’t pay bonuses to the majority of their employees .

Had to listen to director level bods getting excited about their upcoming bonuses last year, I was hoping for a shopping voucher, which they never gave me

Blushingm · 29/12/2024 21:07

NHS here - I'm lucky if I finish a shift on time! That's a bonus

In state school?? Errr not really.

Blushingm · 29/12/2024 21:10

@RebelMoon compared to £000's in bonus every year? Sick pay and pensions? They're not good as they used to be.

This is true. It gets dangled around but rarely trickles down to the people doing the graft.

Hyperquiet · 29/12/2024 21:13

Finance. 5% not loads.

Teacher here. So, no.

This. Me too.

Except late 90s/early 00s.

I can’t remember the scheme or who paid - Government or LA.

It was paid to certain schools that had done well exam wise. Probably quite unfair to other schools. Paid to the school. The Head kindly and wisely said that as all (teaching and non teaching) had contributed that the sum would be divided by the number on the payroll.

A very welcome £100 or so. The scheme only ran for a couple of years.

Two of my daughters are teachers - one secondary in rough area. May be a few cards at Christmas. The other a Y6 teacher in a parentally pushy area. A decenty filled envelope at Christmas.
