Anyone else watching? What a perfect way to while away an afternoon, swooning over Captain Von Trapp. Can't think how many times I've seen it but, if it's on TV, it must be watched!

OP posts:
HurdyGurdy19 · 29/12/2024 22:01

I saw a programme about it, and Maria von Trapp was present at the filming and made a bit of a nusiance of herself, always correcting parts of her story that she didn't agree with. She has a cameo part in the film

Thanks to this thread, I am now happily watching it (for the millionth time) on iPlayer 😋

Idreamofparis · 29/12/2024 22:01

Who knew that nuns and nazis would turn out to be a classic.

There was a programme on BBC 2 this morning about Salzburg and The Sound of Music. It's probably on iPlayer. 😀

Thanks ! I watched it this evening.

I’m mid 60’s… ok, maybe a bit more…and I’ve never seen it!

Oh you must. It's a lovely bit of pure escapism.

Mykittensmittens · 29/12/2024 22:17

TattiePants · 29/12/2024 21:39

@Mykittensmittens I saw that too. I think I was about 10 at the time so 1984ish?

Edit: just googled and it must have been 1982 so I was only 8.

Edited

Same! I don’t know how long the run was but yes, i got tickets and they were inside one of those jewellery boxes with a twirling ballerina as a gift. I too would have been about 8/9. I was so happy!!

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 29/12/2024 22:18

I went to Salzburg to see where it was filmed, l love this film so much

NewGreenDuck · 29/12/2024 21:19

I'm 68, I've never watched it. There are lots of other musicals that are better.

Stupid comment!

OrangesCinammonIvy · 29/12/2024 22:22

@HurdyGurdy19 what came o please

OrangesCinammonIvy · 29/12/2024 22:26

@Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead it's beautiful isn't it. I was surprised by all the wires for the trams but we loved it.

NeedWineNow · 29/12/2024 22:28

Me and DH watched it. We both get teary at 'Climb Every Mountain '. It was the favourite song of my late Dad and also DH''s late dad and neither of us can hear it without teaching for a hankie!

It's a lovely film and we never tire of it.

KatieKat88 · 29/12/2024 22:42

I love SOM and always watched with DM when I was little - how young is too young for my DD to watch it?! She's 5... probably too young to explain about Nazis? Maybe I'll just start showing her some of the songs...

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 22:43

you could end it at the wedding ceremony @KatieKat88
it is a long film

Yeah she's got a pretty good attention span but I may be asking too much of her for the whole thing! Actually DM was taken to the cinema to see it and they left after the wedding so maybe that should be the family tradition...

MissRoseDurward · 29/12/2024 22:59

I think the annexing of Austria and Nazis totally passed me by until I was an adult. I thought they were crossing the mountains just as a little hike.

I had read The Chalet School in Exile before I saw TSOM, so I knew what was going on.

ForgettingMeNot · 29/12/2024 22:59

My mum made me watch this as an early teen and she died last year so seeing this on made me think of her and cry

I miss you so mum mum Flowers

MariaMeringue · 29/12/2024 23:01

It's my favourite film and has always been one of my children's too :)

My parents went to see it when my mum was pregnant with me - that's how I ended up being called Maria.

NobleDeeds · 29/12/2024 23:02

SummaLuvin · 29/12/2024 18:42

her wardrobe is stunning! And except for not being natural with kids and planting the seeds that made Maria go back to the abbey she really isn't awful. She handles her fiancé very obviously thirsting over another woman, who is live-in staff, with exceptionally good grace in my book.

Oh, I Iike the Baroness too. I went to a singalong Sound of Music aeons ago with a friend of mine who was a total fan of the Baroness, and she managed to get half the audience cheering for her. Though what I chiefly remember is being mildly alarmed at the number of authentic-looking Nazi uniforms to be found in the Oxford area.

She was one of the people in the background. I think in a market place scene? Perhaps I bigged it up a bit too much by saying cameo!

PemberleynotWemberley · 29/12/2024 23:21

I adore the scene where Maria and the Captain dance the Laendler on the terrace. She has such grace and he is so elegant. But best of all you can read in his face tension then relief and joy as he holds out his hand over his shoulder and she reaches forward and takes it.
We see them fall in love in the course of the dance- and the poor Baroness can't miss this either.

crumblingschools · 29/12/2024 23:30

DH and I have done the dancing up and down the steps in Salzburg

LunaTheCat · 29/12/2024 23:35

Oh my goodness?
my favourite film ever!
I also loose it at Eidelweiss
in NZ they had screenings where audience sing along - always very popular!

HurdyGurdy19 · 29/12/2024 23:38

This is the real Maria, with her daughter Rosemarie and one of the original Von Trapp she cared for

It's quite near the start of the film, when Maria is on her way to the house, and she's singing I Have Confidence

The Sound of Music
TicTac80 · 29/12/2024 23:44

One of my patients had this on when I was at work :) We were singing along to one of the songs (can't remember which one), whilst I was putting a cannula in her. I think people thought we were nuts, but we enjoyed the song :) Can't believe it's 60yrs old!

MudpiesinEssex · 29/12/2024 23:49

VenusClapTrap · 29/12/2024 18:27

Dh won’t have it on in the house. He’s from a country that was occupied, so he’s a bit funny about the idea of nazis bursting into song.

That's "The Producers."

Very different film.

Lobsterteapot · 29/12/2024 23:57

It’s a lovely, uplifting film. The older I get the more I fancy Christopher plumber too.

I had a cathedral length veil when I got married, channelling my inner Maria (all the bugs and leaves got trapped in it in the churchyard!)
