Anyone else watching? What a perfect way to while away an afternoon, swooning over Captain Von Trapp. Can't think how many times I've seen it but, if it's on TV, it must be watched!

I love it, but wish it ended at the wedding.

It sounds like he's not actually watched it though - as there not what happens.

And it’s not like he was around at the time - it was pre-occupied.

i agree
although i saw it today and did stick around f or after the wedding and the eventual climbing over the mountain

cakeorwine · 29/12/2024 21:24

It's the moment when he starts to sing Eidelweiss with the family in the house that does it for me.

soupfiend · 29/12/2024 21:24

There was a documentary on this morning about it, I hate the film because im not a fan of Julie Andrews or schmaltz but I didnt realise its based on a true story (to some degree) and people in Austria apparently dont know the film because they dont talk about the war or like recognising ot something.

It was very interesting, its on iplayer I think

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 21:25

yes the vonn trapp family left austria in 1938 or something, did not escape the nazi, but the nazi froze their assets
they went to america.

The actual story is not as exciting as nuns making sure cars can't work and fleeing across the mountains.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 29/12/2024 21:28

One of my favourite ever films. I. Didn't realise it was on, although I watched it recently anyway.

We went to the sing-a-longa version 20ish years ago. We made dresses out of my mum's dining room curtains Grin

Jennyathemall · 29/12/2024 21:30

i Like the Star Wars version

Have we mentioned the Abbess calling Maria a c*face yet? 😁

Christopher Plummer according to wiki, did change his mind in the end about the film, which he called so awful and sentimental and gooey - i guess he didnt want to be type cast

Apparently he referred to the film as the sound of mucus. 😀

I'm 68, I've never watched it. There are lots of other musicals that are better.

How do you know if you have never watched it.

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 21:36

@NewGreenDuck
WATCH IT
you know you want to

As I said I know all the songs. You couldn't avoid them when the film came out. I would go to friends houses and someone would have the LP soundtrack and be playing it.

Knackerelli · 29/12/2024 21:38

I love this film, it’s my absolute favourite. It brings back fond memories of watching it with my Gran. Watching it as a child I disliked the baroness and loved Uncle Max. As an adult, I sympathise with the Baroness ( love her wardrobe!) and as for Uncle Max’s questionable ethics…..

TattiePants · 29/12/2024 21:39

Mykittensmittens · 29/12/2024 20:51

I was fixated as a child so my Grandma took me to see a west end production with Petula Clarke as Maria. It was wonderful.

It’s my New Year’s Day hangover film usually! That and the Wizard of Oz.

@Mykittensmittens I saw that too. I think I was about 10 at the time so 1984ish?

Edit: just googled and it must have been 1982 so I was only 8.

NobleDeeds · 29/12/2024 21:40

MudpiesinEssex · 29/12/2024 18:05

Are they the baddies?

No, the baddie is clearly the Baroness, for not liking playing ballgames, and for planning to send off the seven mini-Trapps to boarding school. Far worse than Nazism.

WorriedRelative · 29/12/2024 21:44

When we were hiking in Italy we hiked up to the spot where they crossed the border

MJOverInvestor · 29/12/2024 21:45

A friend sent me this recently and it’s everything you would want from the Baroness (IMHO) www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/i-regret-to-inform-you-that-my-wedding-to-captain-von-trapp-has-been-canceled

As I said, I've heard all the songs. Hundreds of times, that was enough.

no point in sharing on this thread really @NewGreenDuck
