The Sound of Music

Anyone else watching? What a perfect way to while away an afternoon, swooning over Captain Von Trapp. Can't think how many times I've seen it but, if it's on TV, it must be watched!

Couldn't find it on TV so I had to Google the listing. "BBC One except Scotland" 😭 Thanks a lot, BBC!

It was on BBC one in Scotland. Never watched it though

There was a programme on BBC 2 this morning about Salzburg and The Sound of Music. It's probably on iPlayer. 😀

Was that the one where the Kanneh-Mason family went there and 'did' Salzburg and all the touristy stuff, then played a number of the songs from the musical all together?

It was a great programme - apparently it was first on on Christmas Eve last year, but I must have missed it then.

SunshinePlease24 · 29/12/2024 18:46

It was on in Scotland too @TotallyTwisted

What a wonderful film! I can finally understand why my 8yo dd is so obsessed with it. I know all the songs and have seen bits of the film but never sat through it all.

Love it so much. Don't know why Captain Von Trapp has to goad Rolf at the end.

Sometimes when Dh pisses me off I like to sneer at him 'sometimes...I don't believe I know you.'

Also she's a baddie but the baroness is fabulous.

I actually said to DH I don't know why CVT is antagonising the person holding the gun further. Doesn't seem like the best course of action!

Dh won’t have it on in the house. He’s from a country that was occupied, so he’s a bit funny about the idea of nazis bursting into song.

It sounds like he's not actually watched it though - as there not what happens.

Notquitegrownup2 · 29/12/2024 19:02

Another fan here. I can recommend Maria von Traps autobiography The Trapp Family Singers. The film stops half way through, so you get the rest of their story, which is just as good.

I was amazed by how fabulously dotty the real Maria was. And Captain von Trapp is even lovelier as he was twinkly eyed and not scary at all!

Happily it's not them doing the romancing!

One of them does some

MotherTuckingGenius · 29/12/2024 19:04

It's a pile of sugary twee bollox.

choccytime · 29/12/2024 19:04

I love the goat puppet show

I love Christopher Plummer in this! 😋

Me too.

Ripping the swastika.
The bit where he says something to some guy about how he'll be popular with the Nazis and the guy says "you flatter me", and Von Trapp says "oh how clumsy of me. I meant to accuse you".

I choose to ignore the fact that he hated this film!

WinkyTinky · 29/12/2024 19:46

Oh no!! I've missed it 😫 I always go to watch it with my mum but didn't realise it was in today. And she doesn't have access to iPlayer. Noooo!!!!
The tears start for me right at the beginning where the camera slowly zooms in to eventually reveal Maria twirling in the hills. I am just overcome every single time! 😭

LatteLady · 29/12/2024 19:51

@BadlydoneHelen You are thinking of Cabaret and the Hitler Youth singing,"Tomorrow belongs to me". Quite an eerie scenes as the camera pans out of the bier garden.

I thought I was the only one who did that! The tears being with the first shot.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 29/12/2024 19:54

Yes op absolutely wonderful.
Each time I watch it I notice something new. This time it was about max saying to the baroness to Marry and keep money in the family
I just love it.

Nikitaspearlearring · 29/12/2024 19:57

I must've seen it about ten times but I always cry when the audience join in with Edelweiss at the end. I've always fancied Christopher Plummer in this. Yum!

Roryno · 29/12/2024 20:25

SummaLuvin · 29/12/2024 18:42

her wardrobe is stunning! And except for not being natural with kids and planting the seeds that made Maria go back to the abbey she really isn't awful. She handles her fiancé very obviously thirsting over another woman, who is live-in staff, with exceptionally good grace in my book.

I agree. She was a pretty cool cookie really, walking away calmly. I always wondered what the aristocracy at the wedding would have been whispering as an ex nun/servant marrries an eligible bachelor!

Its a twee film, but a nice easy watch.

He was a widower not bachelor.

Nobody ever mentions him marrying a woman young enough to be his daughter.

Snowmanscarf · 29/12/2024 20:38

Probably in my top three films, ever!

MyCatIsTheHeadChef · 29/12/2024 20:41

I have never watched it all the way through in one go, but have probably watched the whole lot in increments. Today i watched the last 30 minutes.

DH said ' Oh, this is always on at Christmas'. I told him the last time i watched a part of it was at the end of August when I took the DCs to Butlins Bognor Regis and they were fast asleep in our room after a heavy morning at the pool.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 29/12/2024 20:41

Greatest film of all time. Although the ‘I am 16, going on 17’ song hasn’t dated well.

Because he wants Rolf to escape with them and not sell his soul to the Nazis/break his daughter's heart.

ohyesido · 29/12/2024 20:47

I never noticed the obvious chemistry between the actress playing Liesl and Christopher Plummer before Shock

SummaLuvin · 29/12/2024 20:48

DiamondGoldandSilver · 29/12/2024 20:41

Greatest film of all time. Although the ‘I am 16, going on 17’ song hasn’t dated well.

I always thought that number was a little tongue in cheek, especially from Liesl, the facial expression and her actions (like her fingers moving up his thigh) were almost at odds with the lyrics and sarcastic. I think Rolf might be more ‘genuine’ in the number, but she seems to be mocking the way she knows she is viewed as she knows it isn’t the truth.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 29/12/2024 20:49

I love the scene where Captain von Trapp cuts in when Maria is dancing with Kurt at the ball and it's obvious they have fallen in love with each other. Most romantic scene ever.
