The Sound of Music

Anyone else watching? What a perfect way to while away an afternoon, swooning over Captain Von Trapp. Can't think how many times I've seen it but, if it's on TV, it must be watched!

I saw something on Facebook that made me laugh re The Sound of Music - about imaging walking down the aisle to a chorus of your coworkers singing about you being annoying and having ADHD.

I love Christopher Plummer in this! 😋

same here

Mykittensmittens · 29/12/2024 20:51

I was fixated as a child so my Grandma took me to see a west end production with Petula Clarke as Maria. It was wonderful.

It’s my New Year’s Day hangover film usually! That and the Wizard of Oz.

I once watched TSOM on Spanish telly. It's called Sonrisas y Lagrimas (Smiles and Tears) there and the dialogue is dubbed but the songs aren't, they are subtitled instead. Great film.

Yes same here on the New Year's Day bit - sure it's usually on then. I just happened to turn on the TV after walking the dog just as it was starting, and I immediately got under a blanket to watch it and neither I nor the dog have really moved since!

Yep I watched it. Just what I needed. Love a bit of SoM!

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 20:56

hard to imagine it is almost 60 years since it was made

Are they the baddies?

No they are the romantic leads.

Philandbill · 29/12/2024 20:58

@FizzyBisto yes, that's the one. I only saw a bit of it unfortunately as we were heading out.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 29/12/2024 20:59

I have been wondering how someone could think the Nazis weren't the baddies in a film set during WWII.

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 21:01

Christopher Plummer according to wiki, did change his mind in the end about the film, which he called so awful and sentimental and gooey - i guess he didnt want to be type cast

Soonenough · 29/12/2024 21:01

Great film. My sis and I used to play the LP over and over again. Reenacting So Long Farewell on the stairs . Used to use it as a bedtime song for my own DCs. I think the annexing of Austria and Nazis totally passed me by until I was an adult. I thought they were crossing the mountains just as a little hike.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/12/2024 21:06

Brilliant film and I'm sorry I missed it today. Julie Andrews seemed to get all the accolades but watching it a few years ago, I think it was Plummer's acting that held it together. Quite apart from the fact he was utterly swoonworthy in it. I accept Andrews actually sang and he was dubbed. But, oh, that dance.

I'd like to see more of his films.

Maybe it's this?

He was reportedly very cross he wasn't allowed to sing!

The songs he did sing were released relatively recently - here is his own Edelweiss dubbed over the film - extra swooning! ☺️

He was a widower not bachelor.

Nobody ever mentions him marrying a woman young enough to be his daughter.

if you look, the true story is a large age difference

Are they the baddies?

No they’re the good kind.

NewGreenDuck · 29/12/2024 21:19

I'm 68, I've never watched it. There are lots of other musicals that are better.

Odd thing for someone who has never watched it to say.

No they are the romantic leads.

The true villains are the people who sing.

Absolutely. The good kind of Nazis.

Well considering his later roles included playing a Shakespeare-spouting Kingon in Star Trek I guess he succeeded in not being typecast

cakeorwine · 29/12/2024 21:21

Marni Nixon was the singer who famously dubbed:

Natalie Wood in West Side Story
Deborah Kerr in The King and I
Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady

She appears in The Sound of Music as Sister Sophia

I've heard all the songs. That was enough for me.

We did this for a school play in the 80s.
I played Uncle Max...
