Bought 4 tickets on the euros last night and didn't win the £33million jackpot (what a disgrace, I want a refund😂)

What's the most you, or someone you know, has ever won?

I was part of a syndicate that won £250k on the Thunderball in 2003. We got about £15k each.

Severina559 · 29/12/2024 01:50

The most I have ever won is £100 on Thunderball BUT my friend's father won £1 million on the letters/numbers codes painted under the Euromillions main numbers! He bought himself a bungalow in the SW by the seaside.

My Mum was good friends with Dave Long, the guy who won the Euromillions twice.

Good thinking, mum!

A girl in a shop I worked in sold a 20000 euro lottery ticket. The winner renovated her house with it! She also continued playing after she won.

PlantDoctor · 29/12/2024 02:07

My nearly neighbours won £1m on a scratch card. They built a really lovely house in the village (think he's a builder anyway) and always go all out for Halloween and Christmas.

My friend won over £100k on a radio competition and used it to buy a house.

rainbowbee · 29/12/2024 02:09

A friend won with a work syndicate. I think they ended up with about 350k each. She replaced her house, put a chunk aside for her kids and then carried on much as normal with reduced hours at work, and much nicer holidays because no mortgage. She got to tell her ex to F off when he came cap in hand though.

I sold a 50k ticket to a regular customer years ago, he went out of his way to never return to the shop so he wouldn’t have to throw me a tenner!

My dad won 1k on a scratch card when I was small. We got a new TV but don’t remember anything else.

stayathomer · 29/12/2024 02:13

loropianalover

she came back daily but didn’t give anything. A lady who won a thousand euro gave another girl fifty euro and everyone in the shop clapped, was a real lovely feel good moment! Yay to the tv coming from the winnings!

In the very early days of the lottery when I was a teenager, I had a Saturday job in a supermarket, and one weekend two of my colleagues won £70k each, completely separately. One was a 16 year old boy (age restriction was previously 16+) and the other a woman in her 50s. For a few weeks we all thought we were next.

Did you work in Tesco bu any chance? I know a couple of people who won in Tesco, although it may have been a syndicate type thing.

ilovesooty · 29/12/2024 02:32

A colleague's sister won 1m on the Euromillions raffle a few years ago. She bought my colleague a house, enabling her to resign from the job and concentrate on her therapy practice.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/12/2024 23:07

Not the lottery but a colleague won £10k on the football pools in the late 1980s.

My parents' pals had a win in the 60s. I don't know how much, but they bought a lovely bungalow in the same town and a shop for the wife to run.

They kept the same friends and every summer they and their child had a 4 wk holiday on the Continent.

DreamTheMoors · 29/12/2024 02:58

I don’t know anybody who’s won a substantial amount, but someone who lives not far from me just won almost $1billion this weekend — yesterday I think, in our SuperLotto or whatever it’s called.
Fifth highest jackpot in history.
California doesn’t take state taxes out but the feds will hit them hard.
Still - it’ll be about $700Million.$600M maybe.
That is an enormous amount of money.

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/12/2024 03:00

One of my neighboure won the jackpot. £1.? Million

gillefc82 · 29/12/2024 03:27

A coworker and friend of my DF won about £3-4m on the lottery in the late 90s. Him and his wife had a few kids and money was so tight for them that every year he’d use all his annual leave in January as, after Christmas and the additional cost of presents and food, he couldn’t afford the petrol to travel to and from his home in Preston to the office in South Manchester.

They bought a modern 5 bed house somewhere on the outskirts of Preston with a pool, sauna etc (I remember going along to a bbq there one summer and wasn’t all that impressed considering what they paid), he got some flashy cars, limited edition collectors items like electric guitars and the wife had a load of plastic surgery done. I think there may have been private schools for the kids too.

I also remember he was a Preston fan and booked a box at Goodison when they played Everton in the FA cup in January 2000 and invited my Dad along who is a massive Blue. He told me they were drinking lager out of teacups as technically you aren’t allowed to drink alcohol in sight of the pitch!

I believe he was very generous with family and friends and I suspect was taken advantage of. Sadly, within about 10 years all the money was gone. The house and other bits had to be sold and he ended up having to go back to work. I’m sure his wife divorced him soon after too.

Copperoliverbear · 29/12/2024 03:28

@Dontlletmedownbruce they must have one the pools as the lottery didn't start until 1994 in the uk.

RachelCarew · 29/12/2024 03:30

£8.90, me. I have one ticket to Saturday’s lotto on direct debit. If I win anything (rare) I just get a ticket to one of the other games with it.

OldTinHat · 29/12/2024 04:59

When I was at school and you were allowed to bet at 16, a classmate did the Pools for the first time and won a million.

My neighbour won about £30k on the Postcode Lottery before I moved into the street. Not worth playing now she's swooped all the luck away 😆

A distant relation of mine won over 1 million in the early 80s as a 20 something newlywed. She bought a nice house and lived her life mortgage free raising a family in comfort . She renovated her mother's house too, that's all I know.

A family friend won a large amount as part of a restaurant syndicate a few years ago. Around 300k each, there were about 10 of them in it. One woman was in early 60s, and I knew her kids, they never had much and she was working all hours as a waitress. She was able to give up and enjoy retirement, good on her!

All boring stories really!

The lottery didn't start till 1994. Where did she win her million?

Probably the football pools or oremium
bonds

motherofdragons79 · 29/12/2024 05:24

My mums neighbours won over 5 million. Didn't change their lifestyle- bought their council house, second hand cars etc.

garlictwist · 29/12/2024 05:43

On the first ever national lottery in 1997 my friend had just turned 16 so could buy a ticket. He won 70 grand!

The first ever lottery was held in November 1994, not 1997.

Taytocrisps · 29/12/2024 09:44

I know someone who won a share in a lotto jackpot. He won around IR£80,000 which was a lot of money back then. He (and his wife) sold their house and they bought a big house in a posh part of Dublin. They also went to Florida on a holiday. The win didn't change them in any other way though.

ImageMirror · 29/12/2024 09:49

My friends cousin was £500,000 about 6 years ago, he was in his early 20’s so purchased a house for cash. He was sadly killed in an accident not long after
