I've got a really bad headache

I'm getting a bit fed up now.

Day 5 of headache, it's getting worse and I don't know what else to try. Only now is it stopping me from doing things but maybe that's because I'm tired. Any ideas or sympathy, it's in short supply here?

  • doesn't feel like a migraine, no visual disturbances like I've had in the past, it's more ache than pain
  • regularly taking paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • asked at the pharmacy today and got codeine, had 4 so far but not touched it

Sorry I know it's stupid to ask about medical things on the internet, I just don't know what else to try and gp seems overkill plus they're shut until Monday.

Feeling sorry for myself now.

You need to consult a GP/111.

Regular use of paracemol/ibuprofen can cause headache.

Edited

This. And try asprin if you can take them. 3 soluble ones in as little water as you can manage.

Test your carbon monoxide alarm.

Hmm I wonder if it is the paracetamol making it worse.

I'll ring 111 in the morning if no different.

Thanks (just tested carbon monoxide monitor, all good thanks)

How much water are you drinking? Could it be a dehydration headache?

RabbitsRock · 28/12/2024 21:34

Are you on HRT OP? Mine caused horrendous headaches.

crackinghead · 28/12/2024 21:37

I've really upped my water in case it was dehydration.

Not on hrt. I'm probably peri.

Thank you!

you poor thing. sounds dreadful. headaches can be very debilitating. i agree with the 111 comments, alongside getting your BP taken.
as an aside, would a quiet warm bath help? meditation? dark room? tens machine? exercise? sending love x

DeffoNeedANameChange · 28/12/2024 21:42

Are you taking any other medications? I had an awful headache a while back (I'm prone to headaches and migraines, but this was a completely different type and pattern) and it turned out to be a nasal sinus spray.

MagpieStars · 28/12/2024 21:42

I had this... on day 4 I did a covid test (process of elimination, didn't have any other symptoms apart from very tired) & it was covid!
Maybe think about doing a test.
Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Paradoes · 28/12/2024 21:44

I had this for about a week

it’s awful - didn’t get to the bottom of it but it’s gone now. Hope you feel better soon

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/12/2024 22:27

Does it get worse when you bend forward? Sinus infection?

ParsonBrown · 28/12/2024 22:29

I have this occasionally, though not for as long. But a glass of normal Coca Cola fixes it for me. I read somewhere caffeine can help with a headache. Coffee never works for me though. Hope you feel better soon

crackinghead · 28/12/2024 22:29

Thank you and for the sympathy.

I'm not on any other meds. I didn't think about Covid but will do a test tomorrow, DH is immunosuppressed so need to check this.

How would you usually treat a migraine? Try a triptan?

TheJackalsJackal · 29/12/2024 15:34

I had this one. My entire face hurt and I was dizzy. It was sinuses. It lasted 6 weeks until I tried a steroid spray.

try beconase.

Imperrysmum · 29/12/2024 15:35

Can you describe the headache, where abouts is it OP?

littlepinkflowersx · 29/12/2024 15:39

I had this and it was a sinus infection - ended up in a&e on Boxing Day lol

However, I currently have a end of migraine; I've taken sumatriptan from the gp - they give me 3 boxes at a time due to struggling with migraines - and have also drank full fat coke; this helps take the edge off.
Finally able to get out of bed and half function day

Cornucopia55 · 29/12/2024 15:45

I'd get that checked out, to rule out some of the rare illnesses which cause severe persistent headache and which are treatable if given prompt attention. I know someone whose severe headache turned out to be an infection inside the skull, for example.

Growsomeballswoman · 29/12/2024 15:48

Have you taken your blood pressure?

crackinghead · 29/12/2024 15:55

Thanks, I will give the gp a call tomorrow.

It doesn't feel like a migraine, I usually find they completely floor me and I can't see, nauseous etc and have to sleep.

This feels like an all over ache in my head, I can function but I'm a bit quiet/miserable. Co codamal is taking the edge off, but after a couple of hours I'm counting down to when I can have some more. I feel very tired.

I've had a stressful few weeks with an ill parent/xmas/work, so wondering if now I've stopped, it's all coming out as a headache.

Could it be from your neck? Tension? Maybe your neck needs manipulation?

SeaToSki · 29/12/2024 16:10

Any other symptoms at all? Arm pain, stomach ache, kidney pain, trouble finding your words when you are talking, are you stumbling or having to concentrate to pick things up, might you have a UTI? What part of the head is it in? Is it throbbing, vise like, stabbing, huge pressure, does your face hurt, do your teeth hurt, does your neck hirt?
