I know, I know. It's totally the most riveting question on chat currently but...

What would you eat with a vegetable tart?

I make a delicious french vegetable tart - pastry case, similar to a quiche, with diced green beans, potatoes, carrots and peas in a bechamel sauce and topped with gruyere. It's delicious. But struggle to see what to have with it. In summer it's obviously a fresh salad, but for colder months? Any suggestions?

Sounds delicious. Serve it warm with thick slices of ham or gammon? Unless veggie of course.

Celeriac somehow. Either a remoulade, gratin or whole baked in foil with garlic, herbs and butter.

OhhYoureSpikey · 28/12/2024 18:54

If it didn’t have potatoes in, or only has a few in, I’d have it with a jacket potato.

We aren't veggie, and I hadn't thought to serve it as an accompaniment to meat, so thank you!

And yes garlic sauteed potatoes are always a hit but I so rarely do them - I think you can get in to a cooking rut so good to have other ideas. Thanks.

I would say that you need something a bit acidic to 'Cut it' as it were. Lemony carrot salad? Served more as a relish? Not everything on the plate has to be hot. I like a good hot/cold constrast. I may be alone.

Pickles, crusty bread & butter

Raw grated carrot obviously.

That's a good idea!

Cold meats, whether charcuterie or roast meat of some description. It already has pastry and potatoes so maybe a medley of green veg, e.g. shredded cabbage, sliced leeks and broccoli. Serve with pickled red cabbage/beetroot/cornichons/onions. Actually gratin of red onions would be good with herb butter and breadcrumb topping.

soupfiend · 28/12/2024 19:05

I wouldnt serve potatoes with it as it has those in it. Its a rich comforting dish so you either go all the way with the comfort idea and serve it with some good chicken or ham, or with something to cut through the richness and have something tomatoey. Ratatoulle?

Jostuki · 28/12/2024 19:43

Braised cabbage.

Ginkypig · 28/12/2024 19:45

Mashed turnip or swede

much Lighter than mashed potato but still comforting and tasty and filling

or some simple asparagus or steamed broccoli

ma add a hunk of lovely bread and butter

A baked beetroot dish.

Anything with a balsamic glaze but the balsamic has to be high quality.
