I don’t like any of them. I’m politically hornless but seeing this turd getting more and more popular would actually make me leave the country.

Nigel Farage seems to care about the UK and about British culture and values. I can't see why some people have a problem with that.

In what way?

I think if we had better quality MPs and cabinet members, he wouldn't have the appeal he has currently. He's much more eloquent than Starmer who just can't think on his feet. If we had Politicians who would face Farage in a debate, challenge him and ask him difficult questions, maybe he wouldn't be so popular. However, the current Labour government are so weak and the Tories are in disarray I can only see him increasing in appeal. He's cultivated a 'man of the people' persona which is more attractive than Starmer the grey man.

Agree. I feel like the main parties aren't listening to people's struggles, and that's why he's gaining in popularity as people feel like he does listen.

And what is he doing about it - seems to be in the US a lot rather than holding surgeries in his constituency?

I haven't seen anything about him for ages (bar this thread). Is this your social media algorithms causing chaos?!

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 17:04

Yes I don't think the media has learnt its lesson from giving him all the publicity in 2016.

Do you think those of us who voted Remain and only have British passports can claim political asylum in the EU if he gets elected next time?

Don't blame the voters, it's up to the other political parties to up their game and challenge these promises. If the current (and previous) government were doing a good job in working for the electorate he'd lose his appeal.

With them only having a handful of seats, I don’t think the other parties will be too concerned.

Farage cares about Farage and nobody else.

That's not correct.

He also cares about Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Elon Musk.

I hope they do show concern, the current state of UK politics (and government) is absolutely dire. I've never been so disappointed in the quality of our elected representatives.

Which bits of British culture and values does he care about in particular?
Could you give an example please?

Have you been marooned on a desert island for the last seven months or so?

No. I've seen bits and bobs, but nothing recently (Elon Musk potentially donating is a story about Elon Musk, not Farage) specifically about Farage and his allegedly increasing popularity. 🤷‍♀️

It absolutely is a story about Farage, and has huge implications for this country.

The UK is in danger of sleepwalking into fascism, enabled by foreign actors.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 28/12/2024 17:21

Maybe have a look at the Reform membership numbers. The left are falling and the right are rising

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 28/12/2024 17:22

Had enough of the liberal woke bullshit

Craftymam · 28/12/2024 17:24

I was just listening to a podcast with Rupert Lowe who's now with Reform.

They speak a scary amount of sense. They have the potential to do well I think.

But what's terrifying is a new party where there is no status quo so to speak.

Farage is already talking about 'reopening discussion' on abortion rights. How on earth does he even think that's acceptable to talk about here in UK.

So I fear there's going to be lots of American fat right influence with the donor money as well as all and sundry with fringe alterior motives trying to jump on the band wagon.

Dangerous

LutherVandrossessuit · 28/12/2024 17:25

Rather than query why people are atrracted to Farage or Reform, you could turn the question round and ask what is it about the Labour/Conservative/Liberal Dem parties that turns off voters?

Well, that is how I feel about Starmer. He is a turd and I’d like to emigrate.

Really?

Nigel Farage has been spending the majority of his time in the USA trying to get the attention of Trump and Musk.

He has completely ignored his constituency.

I believe the only thing that Farage cares about is himself.

He was clever enough to realise he could exploit racism and xenophobia and the fact that so many people will believe anything that the right wing media tells them and the 'blame the immigrants' smokescreen.

Elon Musk is a rabble rouser. He gets off on causing problems. The potential donation is being investigated as it may not be able to happen due to donation rules. But the story IS NOT about Farage's alleged increase in popularity, it's about Musk stirring the pot.

If you don't want people to vote for Farage (or any other party you don't like), then the alternative has to be more attractive. That's how politics works. Mainland Europe is increasingly moving to the right. To avoid doing this, we (the country / politicians) need to work out why the message from the right is apparently so appealing to some of the electorate and address that in their policies.

I don't know enough to have answers (but god knows I'm not going to vote Reforn at any point!), but it's complacency on behalf of the political parties in not making efforts to address the movement to the right which will cause problems. That's what needs addressing.

Toriiaa · 28/12/2024 17:28

I think he's great. Always have.
I voted reform, I will vote reform again. They're the only party who seems to speak any sense

There must be something they like about Reform rather than say the Green party, so it is good to query why they are attracted specifically to Farage/Reform and their policies

Is it because of what amounts to a bunch of useful idiots for foreign powers, pub bores, weirdos, boorish gobshites and disaster capitalists spitting out easy, populist, "answers" to extremely complex issues is a lot more palatable to a sizeable chunk of the voting public who struggle with critical thinking and come out with crap like "liberal woke bullshit"?
