Returning to a gas hob from an induction hob?

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/12/2024 09:46

Got an induction hob as part of a kitchen makeover last year - looks stylish, easy to clean, etc but - I hate it! Fucking think beeps incessantly, you have to hit the tiny, dark control panel to change the settings and the heat distribution is dire.

Now the Jan sales are looming I'm about to give up and replace it with my beloved gas. Has anyone done the same and/or am I missing something fundamentally wonderful about the induction?

I loathe mine as well and wish I had the option to go back to gas.

It's on my list of reasons why we should move.

Op when I was researching induction there seemed to be vast differences in quality. Which brand did you go for?

Ours doesn't beep unless we set a timer.

It's an ikea model and was a which best buy around 200, I didn't want to spend much in case we didn't like it but it's been absolutely brilliant

Frangywangywoowah · 28/12/2024 09:53

We've a Siemens induction hob (bought from a bankrupt kitchen co) and absolutely love it however my MIL has one, I can't remember the brand and I hate it.

Also loathe mine, all that beeping and woe betide anything should boil over 🙄

I am so jealous. We barely have electricity these days. Love our Woodburner . But a gas hob would be soooooooo good.

FridayNight1975 · 28/12/2024 09:57

i hate mine too, it was in the house when we bought it and it’s massive. so i’m assuming it would cost a lot to replace it with gas.

but it would be one of my first lottery winning spends.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 28/12/2024 09:59

I hate mine, it is hopeless for stir fry in a wok.

Bluelagoondrmr · 28/12/2024 09:59

I have a Seimens and it is very good.

My only gripe is my new Ninja pots are not good- the hob struggles to pick them up - pretty sure it is a pot thing as I never had any issues with the hob before these pots. I wish I'd never bought them. So it might be your pots is what I'm saying rather than your hob.

Also if you've put in a new kichen you may now not have a gas supply. Puting one in might be disruptive and costly.

beardediris · 28/12/2024 10:00

I have a top end of the range Rangemaster cooker it came with my house it cost thousands, I dont have natural gas and I dont have a big enough suitable space close enough to the kitchen for calor. I absolutely loathe it, it doesn’t beep but its just not as good as gas although I do agree it’s easy to keep clean but IMO that’s it’s only positive. I stayed with my DS and he has a bargain basement gas hob it was complete bliss.
If I was able to get rid of my cooker and go back to gas I wouldn’t hesitate.

It's a SMEG so supposed to be a good brand - I think it's the concept I just don't like. With gas you can see where to place the pan and it's infinitely adjustable - if I want 6.83% flame I can do it!!!

@Bluelagoondrmr - nope, just a matter of (re)drilling hole in the wall and putting the gas bottle back in it's rightful place!

I think they vary a lot.

Gas is currently a cheap fuel and is easy to control so it's not a bad option though if you're not getting on with the one you have.

CrotchetyQuaver · 28/12/2024 10:07

We went back to a gas hob, driven mainly by the number of power cuts we were getting and not being able to make a cup of tea let alone cook. The power cuts issue appears to have been fixed, but we are much happier with gas and no plans to change it for anything more fancy.

Qwerty111 · 28/12/2024 10:08

I bloody love my gas hob, 30 happy years together so far. As you said, the infinite adjustments, the immediate response. Nothing boils over, you can use any pan you like.

My washing machine, microwave and dishwasher already bleep slightly different notes at slightly different intervals, the thought of adding another one to the cacophony is awful.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 28/12/2024 10:11

I spent years with gas hobs until switching to an electric range oven with induction hob. I would not go back. Some induction hobs are better than others and easier to control.

TheSilentSister · 28/12/2024 10:19

I had a gas hob in my previous house and liked it, temp moved to house with induction hob (Neff, so not cheap) and hated it. So temperamental. It adjusted the temp despite the actual setting. It either was too high and over boiled or very low and took ages. Had to keep an eye on it constantly. Now moved again to house with gas hob and realise how simple and easy it is.

caramac04 · 28/12/2024 10:25

I love my gas hob, 5 burners and so controllable. I do think the future is electric hobs though.

YourAzureEagle · 28/12/2024 10:34

I'm an electrician, so I should be extolling the virtues of electric cooking - however, if you want to heat a pan, the best way by a country mile is a good old gas flame.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/12/2024 10:41

I dont know if you will be able to read this as I think it was behind a paywall. It was Katie Morley pursuing an issue with a Smeg induction hob. She eventually got Smeg to refund the money...

midgetastic · 28/12/2024 10:42

I suspect it depends on the actual hob

Cooked on mothers gas this week after years of my own induction and wondered how does anyone manage - the top heat is way slow and the simmer is too hot - the lack of control surprised me as I always assumed it would be better than induction

WonderingWanda · 28/12/2024 10:47

I have a gas hob, insisted on it when we redid the kitchen, it has a black glass base though and it's a nightmare to keep smear free. Every day I clean it and leave smears because stuff sticks around the burners and I swear at it but you've reminded me why I don't have an induction hob. Have used them in airbnbs and they are horrendous.

Portakalkedi · 28/12/2024 10:47

Had an induction hob in rental House and hated it. Now got bog standard glass top ceramic hob and it's fine, but agree gas is quicker and more controllable. You can get a glass top hob with gas burners, maybe a good idea?, came up in my research when looking to buy new house.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 28/12/2024 10:49

Yes, me!

we had always had gas ( either bottled in France or mains in UK). Current house had a year old induction hob when we moved in. Neither of us could get on with it, and it didn’t work with two of my most beloved and useful pans.

Because there was no gas supply in the kitchen, we had to have the pipe run along the outside from the mains supply, it cost nearly £500.00, probably the best £500 we have ever spent for convenience and enjoyment in cooking.

if you are on bottled gas, OP, I would get the drill out today! ( BTW, we had a system in France which had two cylinders and a dual controller, so you could switch onto the other when the first ran out. It meant you always had a sure supply).

This is why I hate gas hobs
They look so grotty
Induction all the way

deplorabelle · 28/12/2024 10:56

The indoor pollution you get off a gas hob is quite significant. I did not realize until I noticed a huge improvement in asthma symptoms on getting rid of gas. Personally I'd now only cook on gas outside and I'd never have a gas fire ever again.
