Returning to a gas hob from an induction hob?

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/12/2024 09:46

Got an induction hob as part of a kitchen makeover last year - looks stylish, easy to clean, etc but - I hate it! Fucking think beeps incessantly, you have to hit the tiny, dark control panel to change the settings and the heat distribution is dire.

Now the Jan sales are looming I'm about to give up and replace it with my beloved gas. Has anyone done the same and/or am I missing something fundamentally wonderful about the induction?

I love my induction. I'm not sure why yours is sleeping all the time. Mine doesn't.
However my ideal set up would be a combo of both. I've seen some i like I just haven't got round to switching yet.

HowardTJMoon · 28/12/2024 11:06

Induction hobs with knobs are ok. Induction hobs with touch-sensitive buttons are only useful for looking good in a brochure. I hate mine with a passion.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 28/12/2024 11:07

I literally tap my foot waiting for gas hobs to boil a pan of water, takes literally moments on my induction.

Gas is very slow ime.

I have a gas hob, insisted on it when we redid the kitchen, it has a black glass base though and it's a nightmare to keep smear free. Every day I clean it and leave smears because stuff sticks around the burners and I swear at it but you've reminded me why I don't have an induction hob. Have used them in airbnbs and they are horrendous.

Oh - good point about the cleanability of the base; thanks.

I have a Seimens and it is very good.

My only gripe is my new Ninja pots are not good- the hob struggles to pick them up - pretty sure it is a pot thing as I never had any issues with the hob before these pots. I wish I'd never bought them. So it might be your pots is what I'm saying rather than your hob.

Also if you've put in a new kichen you may now not have a gas supply. Puting one in might be disruptive and costly.

Interesting comment about your Ninja pans. My sister has just bought a set and they work perfectly on her induction hob so it might be due to the make of your hob?

Ninja have a great customer support and I think they will allow you to return your pans for a full refund if they are indeed faulty regardless of where you bought them.

I was reluctant to get an induction hob in my new kitchen as I was happy with my old gas one but I love it now. I do miss being able to do a good stir fry in my wok, I used to have a fifth gas setting with two rings which was perfect for a wok. I now use a big frying pan to do a stir fry which is OK but not as good! But I don’t miss the pain of cleaning the gas hob!

allclassics · 28/12/2024 11:28

We went back to gas after having a really good induction for years. I am a bit on the fence - induction much easier to clean and boils water virtually instantly (gas is a pain for that).

Depends what you cook really. If you just cook pasta / heat stuff up on the hob then a good induction is great. If you actually cook, gas is so controllable. I went gas for the aestetic as went for a tom howley type kitchen and it is much better for stir fries and i love that i can get abything out of the oven and put straight on the hob (sauces etc).

Cleaning a gas hob is a totally waste of time and takes ages on our range whwreas the induction was quick wipe and done.

StressedLP1 · 28/12/2024 11:29

I hate my gas hob! (rangemaster). I curse the electrician who told me I couldn’t have induction every time I have to clean the damn thing. Even when it’s clean it’s not clean because I can’t get the steel cap things properly clean.

Are you sure it’s not just a poor make? I agree I would find a touch panel annoying and wound prefer something with knobs

BoobyDazzler · 28/12/2024 11:32

I adore our Neff induction hob. It is so easy to use and clean. I wouldn’t go back to gas if you paid me! I imagine, like everything, there’s differences in quality and usability depending on how much you pay.

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/12/2024 11:33

I think SMEG is supposed to be a good make! Not worried about boiling - the last part of the renovation is going to be a Quooker under the sink. My last cooker was a gas/electric range with 7 burners and 4 ovens which I loved but just too big for two of us and I lusted after an eye-level oven (which is fab).

I’ve only used induction hobs in holiday houses. They’ve all had touch controls and all of them refused to recognise my fingers at least half of the time. I would only consider induction if it had knobs otherwise the frustration could easily lead to the hob being smashed with a blunt object.

We've a Siemens induction hob (bought from a bankrupt kitchen co) and absolutely love it however my MIL has one, I can't remember the brand and I hate it.

Also have Siemens and really love it

MumonabikeE5 · 28/12/2024 11:43

The air pollution from cooking in gas is terrible .
there is lots written about it now.

i wish i could easily get rid of my gas range cooker.

Rainyblue · 28/12/2024 12:41

Our gas cooker is so horrendous to clean. Bits of food get stuck down by the burners, the metal rings never look clean. The metal stays hot for a while afterwards so you have to wait for it to cool down to clean it. Plus the pollution….

We would like to replace with induction but I am aware they can differ a lot depending on the make - have stayed in some air bnbs with awful ones - so reading with interest! Siemens sounds good.

NellieJean · 28/12/2024 12:43

Gas at home but have used induction in a number of holiday lets and hated them all. Very difficult to see the controls ( where are my reading glasses). Move a pan and it goes off, water boils over it goes off. I’m sure they will get better and are the future but wouldn’t have one right now.

user44221 · 28/12/2024 12:47

I switched from gas to induction almost 15 years ago, and in that time have had Siemens, Gaggenau and Wolf induction (3 different houses ) and loved them all. I can have a pan smoking hot in seconds, melt chocolate directly on the hob on level 1, keep something warm on warm, and know that a simmer is a consistent simmer. We're pretty serious cooks and have no issues with them other than the rare time something boils over, when, I agree, having it shut off can be annoying. I also agree with the pp that the difference in indoor air quality is pretty amazing. The difference between cleaning the filters in the extractor between induction and gas is very telling.

I do also have a separate gas wok burner

Adding: by directly on the hob, I meant in a pan on the hob, obviously, as opposed to needing a double boiler 😅

I’m loving this thread. The main reason we didn’t switch to induction (apart from me loving a gas hob) was we would need to improve the electrical supply or have a not very good induction hob - ie couldn’t use all heat areas at the same time without losing performance.
My next hob, if I have one, will probably be induction and I can see I will have to research and then probably get one I will love.

purpleme12 · 28/12/2024 14:37

Oh wow I love mine
I was gas in old house and this one came with induction hob and I think it's so much better

LoafofSellotape · 28/12/2024 14:50

I would never go back to gas, when I cook on it at my parents house it feels so slow.

I have had a Bosch induction for 16 years and it's amazing. It only beeps if something boils over and turns itself off ,which is useful. So easy to keep clean too. If it broke tomorrow I'd replace it with the same.

Boffle · 28/12/2024 14:53

I'm with you OP, I hate induction hobs with a passion for many reasons. Unfortunately we don't have gas.

664theneighbourofthebeast · 28/12/2024 15:26

I swapped back to gas from induction and have zero regrets. I was so happy when the induction hob broke / malfunctioned that I didn't even consider getting it fixed.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 28/12/2024 16:36

We'll be upgrading our kitchen soon (well, it's been on the agenda since before lockdown and I'm dreading it) and this question keeps coming up. I'm reluctant to give up the gas hob, despite its drawbacks.

Clearly not all induction hobs are alike and we'd have to research it carefully.

DH is a bit dyspraxic and I'm wondering how robust the induction hobs are. I envision him putting a heavy pan down too hard and shattering it.

Also, will I have to buy a whole set of new pans? Will the old Le Creusets work on these highly sensitive surfaces?

TheHorticulturalHussy · 28/12/2024 17:06

I genuinely can't recognise any of the problems some you are having with your induction hobs. Not suggesting that you're not of course.
I have one of the AEG models with various zones and I absolutely love it. Touch controls are brilliant, it's very, very responsive, very flexible - I can use all of my biggest pans of various shapes. It rarely if ever beeps at me and definitely doesn't turn itself off if something does happen to spill over.
Team Induction here!

The vast majority of my pans are either Smithy cast iron or Le Creuset. They work perfectly on induction.

We haven't shattered one - or not yet, anyway 😊

blankittyblank · 28/12/2024 17:55

The thing with induction hobs is there are good makes, and then good induction hobs. My dad bought a Neff one, which was supposed to be one the best on the market, and controlling it is a nightmare! I hate the fact you have to press a button which pertains to the hob, then press plus or minus to control the temp. If you need to make quick changes it's so unnecessarily fiddly. If you move a pan off the heat cus it's boiling over (and you can't quickly turn the heat down cus of the issue just mentioned), it starts beeping about a hot pan being on the wrong hob. It's infuriating!
I've gone back to gas from induction cus I hated our old rubbishy induction which came with the house. But, I do see the benefits of induction generally.
For an induction hob I would like knobs to turn, or at least a much more intuitive system of controls than a touch button. And I want them to be 'less intelligent' in term of pan placement. If such a thing exists then I may go back to it one day. But for now I'm much happier with gas :)

1457bloom · 28/12/2024 18:02

I love my gas hob. Sadly when the greens get their way, we won't be allowed them anymore.
