Returning to a gas hob from an induction hob?

Got an induction hob as part of a kitchen makeover last year - looks stylish, easy to clean, etc but - I hate it! Fucking think beeps incessantly, you have to hit the tiny, dark control panel to change the settings and the heat distribution is dire.

Now the Jan sales are looming I'm about to give up and replace it with my beloved gas. Has anyone done the same and/or am I missing something fundamentally wonderful about the induction?

Team gas! But for a different reason. DH has a pacemaker and cannot go too close to an induction hob.

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/12/2024 18:11

Thanks all. Going to order a cheap and cheerful gas/glass 5 burner on the basis that if it's a nightmare to clean we can replace it every few years. At a age were extended guarantees are not that important any more ;)

In our 14 years in our last house, we got through 3 induction hobs. The first went fzzzzzt! And the second one got cracked not long before we put the house on the market. Replaced it with a cheap ex-display one from B&Q and that one really was awful.

Range with gas hob in our current house. It's seen better days but the hob just works with minimal fuss. I use the kettle rather than using it to bring water to the boil but frying, particularly stir frying, is so much better as I can move the pan.

Gas at home but have used induction in a number of holiday lets and hated them all. Very difficult to see the controls ( where are my reading glasses). Move a pan and it goes off, water boils over it goes off. I’m sure they will get better and are the future but wouldn’t have one right now.

You do have to change the way you manage pans with an induction hob but you soon get used to it when you use one multiple times a day.

My mum can’t either as she has a diabetes insulin pump.

Something for people to consider if they’re considering it

I've been using a Miele induction hob for fourteen years now and will never change it. Stirfrys in a wok are no problem, temperature control is great, and it only beeps when you're using the timer!

bluebee17 · 28/12/2024 18:59

I have Rangemaster professional deluxe with 5 induction hobs it's the bees knees and would never go back to gas.

Kittensat36 · 28/12/2024 19:10

I'm not sure whether I have an Induction or ceramic hob, but reading this, ceramic i think. Either way, I hate it. It has 2 settings: do nothing or incinerate. If you realise that your ring is too hot, turning it down does no good; you have to take the pan off for a couple of minutes to allow it to cool a bit. If you use a lower setting, it can take forever to reach a simmer.

I would change it tomorrow.... with a sledgehammer.

PickAChew · 28/12/2024 19:15

Induction hobs don't glow, @Kittensat36 and sometimes make pans buzz. They also cool down very quickly because they make the pan hot rather than themselves.

LuckyBea · 28/12/2024 19:29

We bought a house with a gas hob 10 years ago; I hated it. We quickly changed it for a whirlpool induction hob which was fantastic, and is still as good as new 10 years later.
We recently moved and the new house had a gas hob, again, and I hated it again! Replaced with Siemens induction and it is great.

User friendly, incredibly fine heat control (much more than the gas I've used), no beeping, boils water in seconds. Errors clean in seconds. Just fantastic.

However, I used a truly awful induction hob (can't remember the make) at an air bnb last summer, and can see why the wrong one would be very off putting!

stanleypops66 · 28/12/2024 19:37

I have a smeg induction and love it. Don't find it too beepy. Maybe it's the actual model. I hate gas, mostly for the look as I prefer a sleek work surface and induction is easier to clean.

Caffeineneedednow · 28/12/2024 19:39

I have gas at home, I'm in my mums house for 2 weeks over Christmas I hate it so fucking much.
Can't wait to go home

Cheers. Deffo not induction then. So my two penn'orth is now don't change from induction to ceramic.

comedia24 · 28/12/2024 20:46

@WagnersFourthSymphony we are too and the dog cracked one knocking over a le crescent and we've managed to crack all 4 corners over 8 years - it's still working but... we've got Siemens.

That said, they're a bit safer if you've got children who are not brilliant with motor skills as no open flame so don't think we'd go back.

Hoppityhophops · 28/12/2024 20:48

I'll take my chances with my gas hob if it means not having to use those awful induction hobs. They can get in the bin along with skimmed milk.

comedia24 · 28/12/2024 20:50

Oh and the le creuset works but, I would replace or sell and get lighter pans if you go induction and anyone is clumsy as I reckon it's the main culprit of the cracked corners.

I bloody love my gas hob, 30 happy years together so far. As you said, the infinite adjustments, the immediate response. Nothing boils over, you can use any pan you like.

My washing machine, microwave and dishwasher already bleep slightly different notes at slightly different intervals, the thought of adding another one to the cacophony is awful.

You can have the beeps turned off - when I bought my Miele washing maching and drier I had the beeps turned off before delivery.

Ceramiq · 28/12/2024 20:52

I have SMEG induction and am very happy with it but you do need VERY high quality saucepans for induction to work well.

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/12/2024 20:55

@Ceramiq - interesting but I'm not going to replace all my pans, better to replace the hob!

I had a new build with all Smeg appliances. They were crap, especially the range oven. It wasn't induction though.

The engineer, who became a regular at our little cul-de-sac, admitted that they were expensive but unreliable.

I love my induction range in my current house.

Aposterhasnoname · 28/12/2024 21:29

Had an induction hob fitted in September after a lifetime of gas, and you’ll have to prise it from my cold dead fingers. I don’t recognise any of the issues mentioned here. Mine has a boil assist setting which automatically turns it down if a pans about to boil over, hob to hood, so the extractor speed matches to what’s going on on the hob, and a timer to automatically switch it off. You don’t get any of that with gas. And don’t get me started on the cleaning.

The one and only tiny little gripe I have, is that I used to use the gas hob as a giant trivet when I got something out of the oven, and it I daren’t do that now, so I’ve bought a big marble worktop protector that I use instead

KneesUnder · 28/12/2024 21:41

I have a Rangemaster induction hob with knobs and I absolutely love it- always had gas before. I wouldn’t like touch controls though, sounds fiddly.

Eyesopenwideawake · 28/12/2024 20:55

@Ceramiq - interesting but I'm not going to replace all my pans, better to replace the hob!

I had lots of nice pans pre-induction but some of them were rendered useless by induction. Fortunately one of our DC has gas in their student house share so I passed them on to a good home.

To check if your pans will work on an induction hob, use a magnet. If it adheres to the pan, then the pan is suitable for an induction hob. Luckily I did not need to change my pans, I only had a small frying pan which did not work.

Peridot1 · 29/12/2024 13:50

We had a Neff induction hob in our previous house and I loved it. Especially the ease of cleaning. We moved to a house with a Smeg gas range stove and are changing back to induction this year. Probably not Smeg. Haven’t really rated it. I think some top end Smeg appliances are ok but others not so much. A bit style over substance.

I have come across so many people who used induction in rentals or air bnbs and hate induction as a result. But it’s not induction per se it’s the crappy induction you get in rentals or holiday homes.
