Returning to a gas hob from an induction hob?

Got an induction hob as part of a kitchen makeover last year - looks stylish, easy to clean, etc but - I hate it! Fucking think beeps incessantly, you have to hit the tiny, dark control panel to change the settings and the heat distribution is dire.

Now the Jan sales are looming I'm about to give up and replace it with my beloved gas. Has anyone done the same and/or am I missing something fundamentally wonderful about the induction?

we got a Bosch top of the range induction hob and I have just replaced it a few months ago with a NEFF 5 ring gas hob including wok burner (fab). The induction hob is easy to clean, but that is the only good part about it.

As much as I HATE cleaning the heavy cast iron fucking gas things, I LOVE how it heats up my wok.

In an ideal world Id have both induction and gas for my wok.

Yes, I have this right next to my induction hob. Love it. I highly recommend it as a solution for anyone who wants both!

I'm bloody ancient so I've had every kind of hob apart from an Aga: solid hot plates, old fashioned spiral electric things, gas, ceramic included. I've now got an induction hob and I bloody love it. Nothing would persuade me to go back to gas. We had to rent for a while until our new house was completed and I had to go back to a gas hob and I was shocked at how awful it was compared to ceramic, and delighted when we moved to find how brilliant the induction hob is! We can bring a pan of water up to the boil faster than any kettle! The level of instant control is amazing. We regularly cook stir-fries in a wok, no problem so I'm curious why another poster finds that difficult.

WhisperingTree · 29/12/2024 14:34

Interesting a PP has a gas wok ring with an induction hob. I was reluctant to switch to induction because I had doubts it would work with a stir fry. I have a carbon steel wok and in theory it should work with induction. But kitchen renovations are so expensive so I stuck with the conservative option and chose a gas hob. Looks like I made the right choice.

We have a Neff and I get on with it ok. Certainly better than the ceramic and electric ring cookers I've had in the past. But after cooking on a gas stove again at my parent's over Christmas, ideally I would have a couple of gas rings as well for certain kinds of cooking. Does such a thing exist 🤔?

Yes, see my previous post.

And, actually, I just did a quick search for mixed gas and induction hobs and it looks like Smeg and AEG both do one.

@WhisperingTree

Yes, I love induction - absolutely love it, but its one big limitation, imo, is cooking with a wok. I tried a flat bottom carbon steel one in our old house and thought it was ok but not brilliant, so decided to cover all the bases in this house.

This could be the answer to everything! thank you

I have been investigating how easy it is to cook on a wok with induction compared to gas. There seem to be some positive reviews of using woks on induction but you need the right type of wok (Ken Hom does a range) and cook slightly differently (eg using a spatula rather than tossing the food).

There are also separate wok induction cookers which work with round bottom woks.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 03/01/2025 08:46

That separate gas ring is as expensive as an entire range cooker at £1800. Gas is being phased out. I thought I much preferred a gas hob. The reality is that I don't. A good induction hob is brilliant. I have a flat bottomed wok and it works fine.

Frostythesnowman1 · 03/01/2025 08:50

wow I have a neff induction hob and it's so good. I used to have a dual fuel rangemaster (it came with the house) and water took forever to boil - with the induction hob it is so so quick.

I do admit that you really can't stir fry on it but that's about it

After having an induction hob installed in our kitchen, we purposely kept the gas pipe, just incase we decide to go back to gas.
I’m glad to see this post as I have been toying with the idea of going back to gas myself.
Easy cleaning is the top benefit of induction but the heat is just not the same as a Gas hob. I do agree with op that if I was given the option again I’d go back to gas.

DancingLions · 03/01/2025 09:27

I'm team induction. Would never go back to gas now.

I'm not someone who wants to go out and clean my kitchen every night after dinner, especially not having to stand there and pull my cooker apart every night to clean it. So it was rarely sparkling clean. And unless you do really keep on top of it, the grease builds up which then makes it more of a nightmare to clean. The novelty of being able to quickly wipe the hob with a cloth still hasn't worn off for me!

I have also found for me personally, I have much more control on induction. If there's a dish I just want to keep warm while I wait for something else to finish cooking, the lowest setting on my hob will do that. Whereas with gas, even with the smallest flame, it would burn. Or I'd often turn it too low and have to relight it again. Which is a faff.

I also have long haired cats and while they are pretty good at not going on the work surfaces, they do very occasionally jump up and I was always worried about their tails catching on fire!

Eyesopenwideawake · 23/01/2025 12:39

Squeal! Look what arrived today! Hopefully will be fitted this weekend 👏

Lovely. You'll never see the ring things that colour again so enjoy!

NewYorkherewecome · 23/01/2025 12:56

I have a Bosch induction hob and it’s one of the best things in my kitchen. I love that you can boil a pan really fast, can control the temperature and the fact that a bit of soap and water and it looks brand new again. I am quite particular though and don’t put pans directly onto the hob and use the mats so it does help keep it clean.

Hoolahoophop · 23/01/2025 13:07

Love my induction, quick, easy to clean, easy to control. Dreading loosing it when we move.

Qwerty111 · 23/01/2025 13:20

This is the most exciting update I’ve ever seen on Mumsnet. Wishing you many years of stress-free instantly turning it up and down by exactly the right amount.

Off the back of this thread, I treated my 1990s gas hob to some new rubber feet as one had split and I then realised that two more had perished from old age. 😂

stringsoup · 30/01/2025 13:15

Oh well done!
Let us know how you get on

justkeepswimmng · 30/01/2025 13:31

Yes me - absolutely fucking hated the bastard thing, to make it worse they had removed or changed the gas pipe or something so it was a much bigger job to replace back to a gas hob but we did it and i have never looked back!!

I managed to last 2 years with it.
