Vegetarians and vegans: What is the best meal that you’ve been served in a restaurant?

I know that vegetarian and vegan options are so often disappointing but what’s the best that you’ve enjoyed in a restaurant or cafe?

TIA

Out of a shonky looking double decker bus at a festival. A curry topped with pakoras and a coconut dip.
it was mainly the pakoras though. They were like nothing I’ve ever tasted. Incredible

Burgers. Salats and curries.

Hot crisp masala dosa always comes out top for me.

Can't remember specifically but the menus have generally improved so so much in the last ten years. There's usually a decent selection of options now in most places.

Hypha in Chester. Very expensive but absolutely gorgeous.

There used to be a great vegan/veggie place in York called El Piano. They retired a few years ago sadly. The dhal was amazing and the chai was so fresh and yummy.

I went on holiday to Cuba a few years ago and was served fresh fruit, the most amazing rice and beans and really yummy yams. So fresh and delicious (although they were so apologetic for not serving me meat, but that would have ruined my meal!)

Worst is always quiche, risotto and omelettes. I don't want any of those things ever again in my life, I've had them too often.

Oh and in general, fast food is pretty naff. I don't really like McDonald's options and there's basically nothing but rice in KFC. But in Burger King there's a pretty decent vegan royale.

Squash wedges roasted with sage and hazelnuts and served with whipped feta. I don’t know what they did to it but I still dream about it!

cannaethink · 27/12/2024 14:24

I’m vegetarian so I’m always impressed when there are actual vegetarian options instead of just vegan. I don’t like fake meat so when there’s a veggie burger made of vegetables and beans then that’s amazing.
I’ve had some great veggie lasagnes, burritos and curries. And veggie haggis always goes down well too.

Either a really good pizza or a curry.

Mercurial123 · 27/12/2024 14:27

Thai veggie green curry with brown rice or a decent curry.

Kerning · 27/12/2024 14:28

I had an amazing nut wellington once about 25 years ago that I still think about now!!

Also used to love Carluccio's Penne Giardineira.

Newstart2024 · 27/12/2024 14:30

For eating out I like cote. Had a lovely roasted beetroot starter and butternut squash tarte there the other day. Not too many options but they’re delicious.

I don’t like fake meat or the dreaded risotto option!

In a Gordon ramsay restaurant in Dubai, I got spinach and ricotta cannelloni. It was unreal.

leia24 · 27/12/2024 14:31

And veggie lasagne in casa italia in Liverpool

UnstableEquilibrium · 27/12/2024 14:32

Not a posh meal but Pilpel's falafel and salad platter is reliably great.

Back in the heyday of the Balti triangle I had some great spinach, mushroom and chickpea Baltis with table sized naan bread.

Every item on the vegetarian menu from a restaurant in Glasgow called Ox & Finch. We've made an effort to try everything and not one has disappointed.

ExitPursuedByABare · 27/12/2024 14:33

Deep fried aubergine slices with a feta dip and honey drizzle.

Patienceinshortsupply · 27/12/2024 14:36

Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen in Bath - went there Christmas shopping and friend booked this as a treat. It was simply the best veggie food I've ever eaten in my life - my main was a roasted cauliflower steak with curry sauce with green beans. Never tasted anything like it.

I think it closed down but has re-opened under another name.

Petersham nursery in ham for vegetarian. Expensive but delicious

DiamondLily · 27/12/2024 15:00

@Kerning Penne Giardineira was also the first dish I thought of!! Also as others say, hate fake meat - so am quite happy with anything else usually and we have some lovely independent restaurants in the south west that do lovely veggie and vegan options. Never want to see another butternut squash risotto as long as I live though …

LittleRedRidingHoody · 27/12/2024 15:02

A few -

Shake Shack Shroom Burger 👌

Dishoom house dhal

Mushroom risotto from a hole-in-the-wall Italian place in a small town (can't even remember which one) in the Highlands.

AbigaiIsParty · 27/12/2024 15:03

I am vegan, and prefer curries to anything specifically vegan - namely Thai, and then Indian. When the Thai curries come with tofu, all the better.

toastofthetown · 27/12/2024 15:08

Land in Birmingham is the best plant based restaurantI’ve been to. I’ve been twice the food there is wonderful. I bought my (meat eating) parents vouchers for Christmas and am happy I’ve been invited along.

Otherwise I have had some incredible tacos, frijoles, sushi rolls, bibimbap, chaats, berenjenas fritas out and about in the last few years.

Yes! In a cheese lover and am always a little disappointed when the only option is vegan!
