Vegetarians and vegans: What is the best meal that you’ve been served in a restaurant?

I know that vegetarian and vegan options are so often disappointing but what’s the best that you’ve enjoyed in a restaurant or cafe?

TIA

It was completely unexpected. I went to an Indian restaurant for someone’s leaving do and ordered a paneer wrap. Never tried paneer before. It was incredible. I even got the meat eaters to try it and they thought it was delicious too. I don’t know what about it made it so good, the wrap was slightly toasted, I think it had a special bread, just everything was on point

Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen in Bath - went there Christmas shopping and friend booked this as a treat. It was simply the best veggie food I've ever eaten in my life - my main was a roasted cauliflower steak with curry sauce with green beans. Never tasted anything like it.

I think it closed down but has re-opened under another name.

It’s now called Oak

We went just the once under the new branding and it is now vegan so no longer a place for good veggie food.

The best restaurant meal I’ve had recently was in Scotland, a butternut squash lasagne with whipped feta which was delicious.

I don’t eat UPF fake meat so we don’t get to eat out very much now as so many places only offer a fake meat burger as a joint veggie/vegan burger. It so annoys me that we now avoid places that only offer vegan options to meat/fish.

I always have saag paneer as a side if I have an indian meal. Love it.

The wrap was probably a freshly made indian flatbread. My mouth is watering. Smile

I've just remembered. Burger King used to do an amazing spicy bean burger back in the 90s.

I really miss that! It’s the only fast food item I’ve ever really enjoyed.

Not veggie or vegan but at our high end Indian takeaway I had a fabulous lentil dosa filled with great coconut and veg curry topped with 2 truly gorgeous hand made samosas!!

Crikeyalmighty · 28/12/2024 14:43

@Elphame I agree- loved them!!

Acorn was the bees knees!! Rocket green cafe here in Bath does a fantastic breakfast item of multi variety mushrooms on toast with pesto - I'm not veggie or vegan but I go just for that!!

I once had a mushroom cappuccino soup at the Criterion restaurant (Marco Pierre White) which was memorable (evidently), although I don't think the main was veggie.

Terre à Terre in Brighton is very good.

Yes to Terre a Terre. Never had anything but great food there. The cocktails are good too. And some of the male staff are a hoot.

Oak is not vegan. Quite a few of the options involve cheese - see current sample menu: https://www.oakrestaurant.co.uk/menu which includes ricotta, cream cheese and Old Winchester (a type of cheese). It is very easy for vegans to eat there, but it is definitely not an all-vegan menu.

Looks lovely. I was a bit put off by the butternut squash photo on the Welcome page. There are a couple of them in the veg rack. Grin
I'm sure they are far tastier when cooked by Oak than by me.

Vanilla Black, now sadly closed down. Ate there many times, every meal was stunning.

Naifs in Peckham is the same team, also great but more casual.

TEP noodles from Silk Road in Camberwell.

And the best non-restaurant food was basically everything I ever ate from a street stall in China. So much delicious food there.

For Simon Hattenstone, vegetarian food was something to be endured rather than enjoyed. But not any more

Had a lovely meal just before Christmas in The Scullery in Huddersfield while visiting family. The main was a beautiful lentil cottage pie with a delicious crushed new potato topping.

I'm a few miles S of Huddersfield. I keep hearing about The Scullery, I must make an effort to go one day soon.

Love Terre a Terre. Botanique and Burnt Orange are two other excellent places in Brighton/Hove, definitely worth checking them out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/12/2024 19:24

My problem with Brighton is that lots of the most highly rated places are small plates and only publish a sample menu. I'm very fussy and would need to see the actual menu in advance to see if I could eat anything.

They’ve relaxed that a bit then. It does look better than it did when we visited. It was all small plates then. Horribly expensive for what it was then too.

Vegan fajitas was another meal I really enjoyed in a pub in a northern town. Can't for the life of me remember where unfortunately.
Went to TGI Friday's recently (not my choice!) And had them there. Rubbish and extremely overpriced in comparison. And a glass of prosecco was £10-it doesn't cost that at my local fine dining restaurant!

Sorry quick rant. But they're one of my favourites that I will go for if they're on a menu. Until TGIs experience I thought them almost impossible to get wrong.
