Is your hallway tidy?

How do you keep your coats from looking like a gigantic mass of coats hanging on hooks? Do you only keep one coat for each person on the hooks in the hallway? What do you do with the other coats? Where do you store them?

Does you hallway look sleek and tidy? Care to share a pic?

No coats in hallway. All hung in a wardrobe.

Shakeyourbaublesandsmile · 26/12/2024 22:37

We have a separate area for coats and shoes

But hallway looks shite for other reasons

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 26/12/2024 22:37

No. My hallway is not tidy. I have accepted I need to find a new dream 🤣

WinterFoxes · 26/12/2024 22:38

Coats in coat cupboard under stairs, shoes in a tall shod cupboard, gloves, scarves etc in wicker drawers in hall console. It is usually tidy!

Janedoe82 · 26/12/2024 22:38

We don’t have them in the hall way- have a cloak room and boot room.

fanaticalfairy · 26/12/2024 22:38

Hallways are supposed to have coats, shoes, bags in them.

Get off Instagram!

Anjo2011 · 26/12/2024 22:40

Coats under the stairs, but shoes just seem to multiply and there are always loads just by the door so you have to constantly move them when you need to open it. My house is generally tidy but the hallway needs a regular focus otherwise it’s out of control!

Comedycook · 26/12/2024 22:42

Coats are in the porch on coat hooks...yes it looks like a big lump of coats because it is. I don't consider that to be messy though.

TheChosenTwo · 26/12/2024 22:45

My hallway is very tidy because there’s nothing in it! Coats are hung in the utility room on coat racks and shoes are on either a unit in there or a shoe rack in a cupboard under the stairs (and my overflow shoes are in my office and in my wardrobe 😂).

StillSeekingResponsibleAdult · 26/12/2024 22:46

We have a coat stand for coats, but it's not really big enough. If I was planning the hallway again I'd have the radiator somewhere else, as there's no space to hang things on the wall or have any cupboards. There's a shoe rack round the corner, but no-one uses it as it's in an awkward place and there are just bags everywhere.

No, it's not tidy.

eklaljdj · 26/12/2024 22:47

We have an inbuilt cupboard by the door that stores coats we don't wear much and has a shoe rack on the inside of the door holding most of our "daily shoes", we had storage built under our stairs with a little cupboard for the kids' coats and shoes, and some drawers for some extra shoes, then a coat rack in the hallway that has just a few coats on it (gloves etc put in a storage box in another room). Hallway feels quite clear.

HotBath · 26/12/2024 22:48

There’s a coat cupboard elsewhere, but some coats live on the bannister, and there’s a giant yellow pottery bowl full of keys, gloves, envelopes etc on the hall table, and a large fern and stray shoes. Plus I never took down last year’s brass mistletoe spray from the overhead light. So no, not tidy.

HermoinePotter · 26/12/2024 22:48

Ours are in the boot room at the back of the house and the cloak room off the hallway at the front of the house.

Flatandhappy · 26/12/2024 22:48

Mine is currently full of boxes of wine as we are members of quite a few wine clubs who all deliver one of the twice yearly allocations before Christmas so not only is mine a mess but we look like a family of total lushes!

IKnowAristotle · 26/12/2024 22:55

It's boxing day and I have two kids - no where in my house is tidy.

Off topic, I'd never heard of a boot room before I joined Mumsnet.

I like your style, @Flatandhappy.

Cupboard for shoes
Wardrobes for coats

Grimshadylady · 26/12/2024 23:23

I can't put anything under my stairs as most of it is taken up by the downstairs toilet. The rest of the space, I prefer it to stay clear.

Shoes are not a problem as we have a nice tall shoe cupboard in the hallway and there is also a nice simple shoe storage in the porch. The utility room is not big enough to have a coat overflow storage area.

I need a gigantic hallway with ceiling to fall storage.

Coats are on the coat rack in the hall. Only on MN do people have a boot room.

eklaljdj · 26/12/2024 23:28

@Grimshadylady in our previous home we had hooks in the downstairs toilet for coats to tuck them away, is that possible?

Floralnomad · 26/12/2024 23:31

Our coats aren’t in our hallway and usually my hallway is very tidy , at the moment it has piles of presents waiting to be put wherever they go .

Ilovewillow · 26/12/2024 23:37

We are lucky enough to have a large hallway so we have a wardrobe in ours for all coats, shoes and sports equipment for school.

biscuitsandbooks · 26/12/2024 23:39

We don't have a hallway!

Shoes are on a shoe rack by the door, coats are either on the hooks by the stairs door or on the hooks at the bottom of the actual stairs if that makes sense.

Goodafternoonmillie · 26/12/2024 23:41

My hallways is very tidy. All coats kept hanging in each persons wardrobe but I do admit it is a pain to get coat out of there each day, and if we are in and out throughout the day they inevitably hang on the back of dining room chairs (not tidy!). Then put away at end of day.

mondaytosunday · 26/12/2024 23:42

I have no storage in my house other than bedroom wardrobes and a small understairs cupboard (which is not big enough to use for coats). So yes jackets get hung by the door. And I confess there's a pile of junk mail to one side waiting to be put in recycling, a six pack of Coke delivered the day before Christmas and a couple other things. I am not a very tidy person - my house is definitely 'lived in'.
