I know it's not been officially announced that George is going to Eton .. but if he is where will Charlotte go?

Yeah Marlborough Coll no longer full-boarding school. Full boarding (with a floating home weekend a term) and day from what I can work out.

GildedRage · 05/04/2025 16:18

a day house for successful applicants who live locally. I wonder how many would fit in that category?

IDK, but the clearly have the interest if they're opening it. I just googled it.

There is still interest for private schools just not at 60k a year maybe. The VAT is the killer for top schools. Oundle also has day houses, for example. We will probably see a lot of schools go co-ed and day and with working from home more established now, people will probably live locally and still send their DCs to these schools. Just pick them up at 6-8pm. Big difference between 60k vs under 40k per child. It’s 50
per cent differential.

Maybe Prince George will be day then at Marlborough but it would be a long commute unless the whole family moves. I always thought they might find a school where both older kids can move straight into years 7 and 9 at the same time, but maybe not.

easternenergizer · 05/04/2025 18:29

60k is bonkers... per child. It was like in the 30s when I left school...

PoshScouser · 05/04/2025 18:50

@easternenergizer , it depends when you left school. Smile

ladymalfoy45 · 05/04/2025 18:53

They'll board. It's easier for TRH to carry out duties both here and abroad.

GildedRage · 05/04/2025 18:57

Easier even if only partially boarding

I think lots of schools are moving towards weekly boarding provision.

GildedRage · 05/04/2025 19:03

Yup @Calliopespa my grand daughter will be attending one that even offers transport (very close to home) Friday and return to school Sunday.

Yes I heard this, but I still think there is a market for full boarding if it's done right and doesn't cost Lithuania's GDP to go there.

Well, it definitely won't be Downe House. 😁

It was about £6-7k when I left school! I’m not even that old!

modgepodge · 05/04/2025 20:48

I think Marlborough used to have day pupils 20-30 years ago? I grew up in the area and had local peers who lived in Marlborough and I didn’t think they boarded. Plus a family friends son was at prep school destined to go there then they changed the policy and he went elsewhere as a result. Presumably 25 years ago they realised they could fill all places with boarders so moved to fully boarding, now with VAT I suspect numbers are down and this is a move to attract more pupils to avoid disaster.

KnickerFolder · 05/04/2025 21:03

Marlborough used to occasionally allow day pupils at the Master’s discretion, @modgepodge. I think it was very unusual though.

Ah ok, yes presumably this is what my family friends were hoping for/expecting but couldn’t have due to policy change. Maybe the other people I knew who went there did board despite living very locally, I’m not sure. They were friends of friends from primary school.

I’d be surprised actually if any of them went to boarding school, unless they were day pupils. W&C seem very involved parents, they do pick up and drop off and don’t have the big workload their parents and GPs had. They also seem to have a really good bond with their kids - something again William didn’t have (no matter how many staged theme park sessions Diana leaked to the press), nor did Charles. They’ve learnt the value of being a present parent, and the value of having children who are close with one another

BananaNirvana · 06/04/2025 08:15

Calliopespa · 05/04/2025 12:33

Well I think that way of doing things has passed. Even if they could push their way into an “undeserved” place, I’m not sure they’d want to.

Harry is known to have found Eton not a great fit, whatever basis he was sent on. I feel bad for the royals if it was to keep the boys together after their mother died, as that was a reasonable judgment and it’s a shame it didn’t work out.

There is so much envy seeps out of the cracks in these threads. I think growing up in the RF would be an unimaginable pressure which I wouldn’t wish on my children and I’m not sure why people begrudge them the occasional “entry ticket” here or there.

Kate and William seem sensitive to these issues. Harry didn’t have a great run, Kate herself made a move to a better fit. I’m sure they will do what’s right for their children - to their credit.

The occasional entry ticket?? Their whole life is a fucking entry ticket 🙄.

Fast tracked with their own entrance.

Araminta1003 · 06/04/2025 08:29

Boarding school is a completely different experience though if your parents live 15 minutes away and pop in for every match etc, and besides even Winchester and Eton allow boys to go home on Sundays during the day I think and I assume those who live locally do just that. Plus in most boarding schools kids have tons of really long holidays.
Kids commuting up and down to far off secondary schools end up having less quality time with their own parents, quite often.
The only day and boarding option in that neck of the woods is what Bradfield? Coed option, not as academic as some of the others like Eton and Marlborough, but perfectly good school. There is also Cranleigh, but I think it would be too far for a day person.

UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType · 06/04/2025 09:03

That might change if William has to take on more of Charles's duties, which is not unlikely given Charles's fluctuating health.

I know you’re being funny but both of the Francis Holland schools are higher up in the Times league table than Marlborough. The girls who go there do really well.
