The Christmas tree is down!

ILikeMySuitcase · 26/12/2024 12:42

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

It only went up a few days ago, and as is traditional will stay up until Twelfth Night.

Madness. The two turtle doves are only on their way today. You've got ages till the drummers start drumming.

Will be illegal when I become a petty dictator of the world.

I'll defintely vote for you 😀

This is the first year that I’ve relaxed into the idea that customs have changed and there are now two main ways of doing Christmas.

One group (slightly more traditional) … the tree and decorations go up a week or so before Christmas and the Christmas period is from Christmas Eve until 12th night (or sometime until new year). Celebration is mostly about the quiet period between Christmas and New Year.

Another group … Christmas starts in late November which is when the tree goes up, and is over by Boxing Day morning. Celebrations is mostly about the run up to Christmas, seeing Santa, light shows, “Lapland” holidays.

Neither group is wrong.

I think the second group is becoming more mainstream because it more supported commercially (shops are done by Christmas and TV adverts are for summer holidays etc).

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

I do both. I like the quiet period more because of the chaotic build up.

You’ll just get told not to open the thread if you don’t like it like I have just been told 😆

I'll close it tomorrow, the day after the thread was started as it will no longer be Boxing Day and therefore no longer be relevant.

Then there’s the 3rd group who have got their tree up straight after Halloween is over and are hyperventilating by Boxing Day because they can’t take anymore more of seeing the Xmas decorations

DappledThings · 26/12/2024 15:13

What does everyone do who insists the Christmas period only starts on 24th when they go shopping in Dec, close their eyes?!
Up until at least Advent I stride past anything Christmassy in the supermarket aisles muttering loudly how fucking ridiculous it is for it to be out. If accompanied by minors I remove the swearing but I still point out when asked why we aren't getting anything in that aisle that it's because I refuse to think about Christmas until Advent and it's ridiculous any of it is for sale.

DC are well trained. Actual conversationi had with 6 year old in November in Sainsbury's:
DD - There are mince pies out! Can we have some
Me - Nope. And why is that?
DD - Because it's too early
Me - Correct. And when are we allowed them and when should the shops be allowed to sell them?
DD - Advent.
Me - Quite right.

Shinybear · 26/12/2024 15:14

Christmas has literally only just started

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 26/12/2024 15:15

People treat the Christmas tree like the enemy.

Christmas tree down! Take that, you bastarding invader.

It’s bizarre.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 26/12/2024 15:15

Mumofnarnia · 26/12/2024 14:57

Because I want to post! People don’t need to comment on it 🙄

Hard luck then - you can't stop anyone commenting!! How bizarre and bewildering...

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 26/12/2024 14:29

It's can't be "a date" and then also several dates.

If we're being really picky, it's one day.

If we're being more "seasonal" it's whatever works for you/your family/your religion/your belief/your traditions.

Christmas Day is Dec 25th. There are 12 days of the Christmas season.

Hard luck then because you can’t stop anyone posting on a thread despite being told not to open it if they dont like it! Get a grip!

Chypre · 26/12/2024 15:17

Absolutely not - we have a live (well, chopped down) tree and garden waste collection is not until January!

No, that would be the second group, you have just chosen to be less charitable in how you describe them.

In the same way I could complain that the first group are unreasonable in complaining about shops wanting to sell wrapping paper in November 😅

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 26/12/2024 15:18

Mumofnarnia · 26/12/2024 15:00

Careful! People will be quick to jump on your post and ask why you bothered to open the thread if you don’t agree with it 😆

I'm not sure why you commented here in case that poster was like you and doesn't want her posts commented on... 🙄

Ohshutupsimonyoutwat · 26/12/2024 15:18

Madness putting it up so early in November no wonder you are sick of it. I worked 13 hours yesterday so today is my Xmas day and the tree is very much remaining up until new year when I am back in work.

I think that's a bit silly. If you want a mince pie in November and shops are selling them, why not?

Disclaimer: I do not like mince pies.

I'm group 4, both.

Tree and decorations go up early, first weekend in December at latest and sometimes earlier. They stay up until the 12 days have finished, I'd never take them down before the 7th. Christmas events are done in December, and we see a lot of family and friends during Betwixtmas too.

That being said, I love Christmas trees and so do DC. Having one up for 5 or 6 weeks is something we enjoy, and I always feel sad taking it down even though I'm not a January disliker.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 26/12/2024 15:21

Took mine down earlier, it's ready to go to the tip tomorrow. I need the space back and was fed up of watching the tv with a tree branch in the way. I'm going to have a massive clean and declutter whilst I'm off as well.

But I've always taken it down before new years eve. It's only the last few years I've taken it down on Boxing Day though.

StaunchMomma · 26/12/2024 15:22

Christ - talk about ruining the Christmas spirit!

Ours will be staying up until at least 12th night.

I love our tree and the feel of the house with decs up.

ILikeMySuitcase · 26/12/2024 15:22

ObtuseMoose · 26/12/2024 13:29

I had ours down as soon as the last sprout was swallowed yesterday!

You took them down on Christmas day or are you being sarcastic? Genuine question, I've had far too much Bailey's to tell the difference

OP posts:
niadainud · 26/12/2024 15:22

Er, congratulations?

I'm not sure which is more bizarre: taking your tree down on the second day of Christmas or running to Mumsnet to brag about it.

Because I have rules!

Same as I don't allow the ones with icing on top in the house ever. They're not right.
