The Christmas tree is down!

ILikeMySuitcase · 26/12/2024 12:42

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

This is the first year that I’ve relaxed into the idea that customs have changed and there are now two main ways of doing Christmas.

One group (slightly more traditional) … the tree and decorations go up a week or so before Christmas and the Christmas period is from Christmas Eve until 12th night (or sometime until new year). Celebration is mostly about the quiet period between Christmas and New Year.

Another group … Christmas starts in late November which is when the tree goes up, and is over by Boxing Day morning. Celebrations is mostly about the run up to Christmas, seeing Santa, light shows, “Lapland” holidays.

Neither group is wrong.

I think the second group is becoming more mainstream because it more supported commercially (shops are done by Christmas and TV adverts are for summer holidays etc).

Group 2 is not a “custom” it’s just commercial nonsense.

Santa is St Nicholas - his feast day is Jan 6th.

Touchy!! It's not me who needs to get a grip - for the love of god!!!

You was the one who commented on my post with a ‘touchy’ comment! 😆

Taking down before NYE is just weird! Why?!

Because I have rules!

Same as I don't allow the ones with icing on top in the house ever. They're not right.

Rules should have a point though! That one's literally pointless?

What difference does it make if you quaff a mince pie in November? The sky won't fall in?

I didn’t even put mine up this year, however… the last three years it was down on Boxing Day … I just can’t. It was hanging over me and I wanted it gone! When I realised the joy of taking it down was greater than the joy of putting it up, I just didn’t this year. But… Christmas is like the wheel of fortune to me … sometimes it’s brutal and sometimes it really is the most wonderful time of the year. So if I ever get a ‘most wonderful time of the year again’, I think I’ll … nah… I’ll still take it down on Boxing Day because it’s just annoying!

Lol you sound fun. Are you like this on every occasion? The second the clock strikes midnight, "Happy New Year! Goodbye and goodnight."

Fess up. You've been reading Edgar Allan Poe, haven't you? 😀

mugglewump · 26/12/2024 15:25

We only did our tree at the weekend. I'm a bit superstitious so I don't like to take it down before 12th Night.

I like my rules. They amuse me. They amuse the DC too. That is all that is required.

And when I'm the petty dictator I mentioned earlier they will remain the rules!

Enjoy your evening.

TooMuchDontCare · 26/12/2024 15:29

God no!
This comes up annually & these threads are always so depressing.

Surely today is a day to relax & bask in the christmas glow, eating lovely food, having nice drinks, fire lighting, good books on the go.

I can't think of anything less appealing than taking all the decorations down on the 26th. It's so joyless & makes me imagine a cold, impersonal house full of grey walls, mirrored furniture & crushed velvet & fake (but tidy) plants.

Depressing

It might ideally be a day for that but that doesn’t mean it’s happening like that for everyone.

Not today, boxing day is for lazing around eating biscuits and cheese and quality street. I'll probably do it at the weekend though, as I do like a good tidy before the New Year.

OMG! I'm doing the same - best day of the year, boxing day...

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/12/2024 15:28

I really don't get people who do this.

Neither do I - what was the point in putting it up in the first place?!

We usually put ours up at the end of November, but it was mid December this year and I am damned if I made all that effort to rip it down again already.

Why do decorations that have been put up for enjoyment suddenly annoy people at midnight on Christmas Day? If you reckon you need the space then how did you cope while the tree was up? It's baffling.

Natsku · 26/12/2024 15:32

Our tree only went up on the 23rd, no way would I take it down already! It goes down on Epiphany, as per tradition, though Christmas doesn't end until the 13th, on Saint Knut's Day

Topseyt123 · 26/12/2024 15:33

Ours is just a fibreoptic one that you fluff out and plug in. It literally goes up or down in five minutes and packs away very quickly. It is very sleek but at the same time nice and colourful when switched on. I love it for that reason.

It is the only thing I have put up for the past couple of years and it is perfect. It goes up about halfway through December. Down on New Year's Eve or at the latest New Year's Day. Not today though. Boxing Day is for lazing around winding down after Christmas day and planning how to spend any vouchers I got.

mitogoshigg · 26/12/2024 15:36

Really? it's still Christmas until the 6th January

Well I know it’s a controversial thread but there’s no need for that sort of language 😱

Perhaps because some people have ended their Christmas celebrations and now want them away before NYE?

ThisIsSockward · 26/12/2024 15:38

A Swedish DH means it's supposed to stay up until nearly the middle of January (Saint Knut's Day). In my family, the tree usually went up as early as possible in December, though we tend to run late in our house. Anyway, no, our tree will stay up for weeks to come. It feels like such a fuss to put up that I'm in no hurry to remove it, tbh, and I like the extra light during this time of year.

Scrabbelator · 26/12/2024 15:38

TheBirdintheCave · 26/12/2024 14:01

My husband and I were talking about this the other day. There seem to be two camps of Christmas people, those who follow traditional/religious Christmas and those who follow commercial Christmas (as in, follow what the shops do).

I think you, wise woman, have summed up perfectly what we're all arguing about on this thread.
There are those of us who celebrate the actual season of Christmas, from Dec 25th - Jan 6th.
And then there are those who celebrate commercial Christmas, dictated by consumerism, marketing, media influence and current trends.
And then they claim they're celebrating in their own way, or having their own Christmas period. Whereas, in actual fact, all they've done is bought into the over-hyped commercial onslaught that starts earlier and earlier every year, so that by the time Christmas actually comes around, they're sick of it all and can't wait for it all to be over.
And then when the rest of us are starting actual Christmas celebrations, they're celebrating nothing because their (fake) Christmas celebrations started way too early.
