The Christmas tree is down!

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

I can't understand why anyone would want to take their decorations down on Boxing Day - or even the following day?

We take ours down on the (English) traditional 12th day - which for us is 5th January.

But neither can I understand familys that put their's up in November or even early December.

TrollTheAncientYuletideCarol · 26/12/2024 14:36

Wow, the Christmas spirit isn't very strong with some of us!

Calm down, present exchanges and Christmas are celebrated on different days all over the world. Some do early Dec (Belgium?), some celebrate 24th (many mid-European countries), some 25th and some not til 6/7th Jan. Lots of different festivals at lots of different times.

Younger people may well be into Christmas decorations earlier as they see them on social media, this is not necessarily a fault, they are just going with their generations interpretation, just as my generation don't send cards that much any more or go to church.

Times change, it's supposed to be fun!

Okay well enjoy your Christmas spirit being ruined then by something as simple as a thread or post you didn’t need to open Xmas Confused

Look how angry you’re getting 😁

Ours have been up since November 10th, not sick of them, I absolutely adore Christmas however I need to have everything down and the house cleaned top to bottom for New Years eve.

I'm working between 29th - 1st so won't be able to do it then, have family visiting tomorrow so unlikely to have time & i have 5 Christmas trees to take down. Plus I'll be swapping from Christmas to a few wintery decorations.

Why on earth would you put them up in November?

Bumbleebeetree · 26/12/2024 14:38

Why would you take it down when it's only the second day of Christmas?

Not angry at all! just confused why you’d open something that ruins Christmas spirit if you’re really enjoying Christmas.

NOPE. To be fair, we don't even get home from relatives from tomorrow but it feels like 12th night/ DS back to school is best time to do it
We don't do much over NYE anyway

Just confused why you’d comment on a post you don’t agree with??

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 26/12/2024 14:40

Good grief no, my tree stays up until the bitter end!

I've had a turkey sandwich and eaten the left over pigs in blankets but twelfth night means absolutely nothing to me as I'm not religious. Christmas is over as far as I'm concerned as soon as Christmas day is finished. For me Christmas is about the decorations, family time, twinkling lights and overindulging in food and drink.

But even if you go with a non religious social interpretation of Christmas - the period of feasting is still 25 Dec - 5 Jan. Yuletide is 21 Dec - 1 Jan.

3peassuit · 26/12/2024 14:41

I put up my tree around the 20 th which is as late as my family will allow. I think if I had lived with it since early December I’d be itching to take it down on Boxing Day.

Not that I didn’t agree with it. Just confusing. I don’t think it’s that weird to find it confusing about why open a thread about something you don’t enjoy and actively ruins something for you. But clearly you’re enjoying it so it hasn’t ruined your Christmas spirit which is a win! Have a good day Xmas Smile

The same with you?? Why comment on my post if you don’t or you do agree with it? Have a good day too 😁

OMG no way!!

Winter is long, dark and tedious enough. I'll hang on to the colour and sparkle until it starts to look stupid!

Trixiefirecracker · 26/12/2024 14:21

November is stupidly early for a start. Boxing Day is part of Xmas and so it’s not over. I think it’s joyless. And you don’t mean ‘tolerance’ .

When has Christmas ever begun before Advent Sunday?

Not having decorations up for a particular festival at a time that isn't part of the festival isn't joyless/joyful - it's simply outside the scope.

Christmas is a festival that is prefaced by Advent, starts on 24 or 25th and ends with Epiphany. Yule was a minimum of 12 days from the solstice.

Inertia · 26/12/2024 14:44

No, it’s still Christmas holidays. Ours comes down New Years Day.

OkPedro · 26/12/2024 14:46

If I didn't have children then yes absolutely the tree and decorations would have been down today.. actually I wouldn't have put a tree up at all. Not a bah humbug I'd just rather not acknowledge Christmas. I'm happy for other people to enjoy it not my business..

I prefer St Stephens day, I'm in Ireland.. it's a day to enjoy a takeaway for dinner, I'm in my comfys, watching a film. the kids are out with friends. It's just me and my lovely cat and I'm not back to work for awhile yet 🙌

It’s not long dark and tedious unless you make it. Have you been out today - great for a long run or walk to get some fresh air .

Cattenberg · 26/12/2024 14:46

We didn’t put our tree up until 22nd December this year, so won’t be taking it down before 12th night. Surely most people in the UK still celebrate Boxing Day, even if not the full 12 days of Christmas?

Cynic17 · 26/12/2024 14:50

This is a result of people putting up their trees way too early! There are 12 days of Christmas, so it's -
Up: 24th Dec
Down: 5th Jan

And what the flip is a "deep clean" (a phrase I never see/hear outside this site), and why would anyone want to clean on a Bank Holiday?

Oldraver · 26/12/2024 14:51

Nope, we didnt put it up until the week before Christmas so didnt peak too soon

BackinBlack24 · 26/12/2024 14:51

O I love having the tree up warms up the room , I miss it when it's gone
