The Christmas tree is down!

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

That’s just not true though. There are 12 days of Christmas, 6th January is the last day of Christmas and in other countries this is often also a special day (Ireland 6th of January is known as Women's Christmas, in Spain it is Three Kings Day).

Take your tree down when you want, it’s up to you but Christmas is a season not a day.

cant think of anything worse than having my tree up still in the beginning of January.

Different to you so it must be joyless, right?

Are you joyless because you didn't put them up in November?

People find joy in different ways at different times. Have some tolerance.

November is stupidly early for a start. Boxing Day is part of Xmas and so it’s not over. I think it’s joyless. And you don’t mean ‘tolerance’ .

I think putting decs up in early November is crass and tasteless, taking them down on Boxing Day is miserable and joyless.

Hard to do when it’s appearing all over your facebook feed then you come on MN and see threads like this 🙄

You may not be able to avoid seeing it, but you're completely in control of whether you give them any validation. You can see the thread title and not open the thread. You can scroll past it on FB with nothing more than an eye roll that they're "killing your Christmas spirit".

Nc546888 · 26/12/2024 14:22

We won’t be doing it until a few days after new year

Just don’t open the thread then, if reading what other people do kills your Christmas spirit there’s a simple solution

Shops put stuff on shelves during the 6 week summer holidays nowadaya and by Xmas eve they’re already starting displaying Easter eggs. It’s depressing!

Yup. Completely sucks my joy away. A shame because they could be lovely festivals. It’s like lovely fancy chocolates, the right amount, even a bit too many at the right time is fantastic but gorging yourself on it for weeks becomes horrid.

Stupidly early in your opinion (and mine, for what it's worth). But that doesn't make you lacking in joy, does it? Because the people who do it in November do it because that gives them joy. So you not doing it will make you joyless in their eyes.

And...don't I? Would you like to tell me what I meant?

Sounds like you’re struggling to enjoy Christmas if you have such prescriptive times to enjoy yourself.

Uricon2 · 26/12/2024 14:27

Boxing Day is part of Christmas. The 10th of November really, really isn't in any universe.

Do what you like, noone's stopping you, but any argument predicated on why you need to take trimmings down when you put them up that early is never going to totally go your way (and you started the thread)

Scrabbelator · 26/12/2024 14:27

Of course you can celebrate however you like.
The point I'm making is that Christmas is not some subjective date in our calendars. It's Dec 25th.
And if your celebrations are over by then, then what you've celebrated is either Advent, or a season of your own making ("our Christmas period).
But you haven't celebrated Christmas, because Christmas starts on Christmas Day, Dec 25th, and runs to Jan 6th.

Our trees went up on November 10th. We've enjoyed weeks of twinkling lights and tinsel, had a wonderful Christmas day yesterday and now want our home back to being clean and spacious before the New Year.
Everyone has their own special way of spending Christmas, some put their decorations up earlier than others, some take theirs down before the New Year, others after. Some people celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, others do not.

Just because you disagree with my families version of Christmas I'm miserable and joyless?

The fact you’ve chosen to start a thread about it does indicate a degree of joylessness, yes. But you’re probably not entirely miserable

It's can't be "a date" and then also several dates.

If we're being really picky, it's one day.

If we're being more "seasonal" it's whatever works for you/your family/your religion/your belief/your traditions.

But what I’m saying is those who put their Xmas trees up as soon as Halloween is over and have to post on social media to tell everyone they’re the first to put them up then feel the need to post all over social media (and make threads on MN) telling people they’ve took their tree down on Boxing Day just kills the spirit for everyone else and I feel they do it for validation!

Edited

Firstly I don't use social media so absolutely no pictures of our trees have been posted anywhere. Second of all, I was actually 3rd on my street to put the decorations up.

I created this thread because I've seen several comments over the last few days on multiple threads of people saying they're sick of the decorations now and couldn't wait to take them down. With us taking ours down today, I was curious if anyone else was.

I’m absolutely not giving them validation and my point in opening this thread is to state that I’m sick of their attention seeking behaviour! You don’t need to comment on my posts but you keep doing so 😆

Thank you but we’ll continue with our Christmas plans - it’s perfect. No plans on changing anything. We don’t need to follow calendar dates to have our Christmas celebrations. From reading this thread, our plans are the same as many so must be working well.

You created this thread though which is similar to posting on social media!

Ooohhh whooopy do you were in the top 3 on your street to put their tree up!

yes people are sick of decorations because they put them up too early then moan about it

Soccermumamir · 26/12/2024 14:34

No it's too early. We've just got back from the cinema and I'm now sat drinking coffee and eating nibbles with the tree still up and presents everywhere lol I'll probably take it down over the weekend before new year, but will enjoy it for a little while longer yet 🙂

To me it's lovely.
But then we don't put it up until Christmas Eve. I wouldn't want mine up at the start of December, because to me, that's Advent. Many other people love that. It's a personal thing.
