The Christmas tree is down!

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

Mine will also be down by New Year’s Eve. However there’s a few days to go until then. It’s only Boxing Day and threads like this on Boxing Day just kills the spirit I think.

In all likelihood we'll do ours the weekend. DH is working a day or so next week so if we do it the weekend, it'll give us a few solid days of nice family time.

Which is what we love about Christmas. The decorations are just a small part of it.

hopeishere · 26/12/2024 14:07

People fall into two camps: decorate too early and done by the big day, or decorate later and leave it up for longer.

We put up mid December and take down New Year's Day.

Agree Boxing Day is for eating and lazing about!!

We do our main celebration on 6 December. 25 December isn’t a big event other the end of our Christmas period. We don’t celebrate 6 January as we’re not religious.

Then you're just celebrating Sinterklaas, not Christmas.
"25 December isn’t a big event other the end of our Christmas period."

  • Christmas is not an ad hoc date in the calendar. People can't claim to celebrate Christmas if their celebrations are over on Dec 25th, ie. Christmas Day and the start of the Christmas season.

No, we only put ours up second week in December. Will take it down in new year and do a spring clean. Sitting down today after two eleven hour shifts and a twelve hour shift leading up to Christmas Day (retail!)

ExquisiteDecorations · 26/12/2024 14:10

No, we keep ours up till 12th Night, it would feel really weird to not have it up at least through New Year. It's so beautiful it would be a shame to take it down sooner.

It’s what we’ve done my whole life (I’m 55) and works for our family including extending the traditions to our DC’s. We can claim to celebrate however we like!

You are right. The decorations are a small part of it but when you have excited kids like mine it means the world to them. I think it kills the Xmas spirit when people put up their decorations as soon as Halloween is over and then have them down by Boxing Day.

kkneat · 26/12/2024 14:12

I keep to the Christmas tradition of taking the decs down on 5/1. We’ve only just had Christmas Day, why would you bother putting them up if they’re coming down on Boxing Day?

I’m sure other peoples children are equally excited regardless of when the decorations went up and down.

GameOfJones · 26/12/2024 14:14

Wow, I thought I was early because I take my tree down on New Year's Eve (I just like a fresh start for the New Year, the tree goes up the first weekend of December as I like it to last the month.)

I think I'd feel really deflated if I thought Christmas was over on Boxing Day. For me, this is the best bit! All of the work is done, the fridge is full of leftovers and cheese so I don't need to cook and the next few days are for chilling out and enjoying ourselves.

I have an excited child. She is the reason they went up 1st December, when usually we'd be mid/late December. It's not going to kill her Christmas spirit if they aren't up once Santa has been and we've played with the presents and seen all the family and we all go back to work. She'll have had them nearly a month and that is more than enough Christmas spirit.

I've had a turkey sandwich and eaten the left over pigs in blankets but twelfth night means absolutely nothing to me as I'm not religious. Christmas is over as far as I'm concerned as soon as Christmas day is finished. For me Christmas is about the decorations, family time, twinkling lights and overindulging in food and drink.

Boxing Day is still part of Christmas holidays. How utterly joyless.

DH back to work tomorrow so may be tempted to take it down tomorrow.

All the boxes, Santa Sacks and wrapping paper etc need removed from my spare room and shoved back in the attic before the big clean up can commence.

But today, is a day of rest.....

WalterdelaMare · 26/12/2024 14:03

Wow. How utterly miserable and joyless. Our trees have been up less than a week and Christmas has only just begun.

I bet you’re one of those that decorates ridiculously early.

Our trees went up on November 10th. We've enjoyed weeks of twinkling lights and tinsel, had a wonderful Christmas day yesterday and now want our home back to being clean and spacious before the New Year.
Everyone has their own special way of spending Christmas, some put their decorations up earlier than others, some take theirs down before the New Year, others after. Some people celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, others do not.

Just because you disagree with my families version of Christmas I'm miserable and joyless?

oh sod off!

What a bloody miserable thing to post on Boxing Day, the Second Day of Christmas. Christmas only started on Christmas Eve! Most of us are snuggled up, eating leftover turkey, loads of cheese and watching The Big Sleep on tv. If you want to be an utter party pooper kindly do so in a less smug and public manner.

Oh leave them alone.
Everyone has different personal circumstances and situations.

YourGladSquid · 26/12/2024 14:16

Mine stay til the end of January.

If I absolutely had to take the decor down it would never be before the 6th of January.

Pistolpunk · 26/12/2024 14:17

Not a chance I'm taking any of the main trees down. They will stay up until the 2nd January. I'm still celebrating xmas until then and I love the tree lights as it makes everything look warm and cosy.

Different to you so it must be joyless, right?

Are you joyless because you didn't put them up in November?

People find joy in different ways at different times. Have some tolerance.

But what I’m saying is those who put their Xmas trees up as soon as Halloween is over and have to post on social media to tell everyone they’re the first to put them up then feel the need to post all over social media (and make threads on MN) telling people they’ve took their tree down on Boxing Day just kills the spirit for everyone else and I feel they do it for validation!

Can't wait! We have people round this evening and it will be coming down in the next few days 😁

So...don't interact with it and give them the validation, if that's all you think it's about?

WinterBones · 26/12/2024 14:19

absolutely not. they didnt go up til the 16th, we take them down around the 4th/5th.

Hoplittlebunnyonrepeat · 26/12/2024 14:19

Yep. I love the build up to Xmas, but the decs are all away now, hoovering done, purging old toys and finding homes for the new ones. Love a clean house after Xmas, and now there's room to actually be able to play with the new toys.

Hard to do when it’s appearing all over your facebook feed then you come on MN and see threads like this 🙄
