I have a few hours to myself tomorrow and need a good cry. Any film recommendations?

You will have watched your film by now no doubt.

For the next time, consider Shadowlands. Anthony Hopkins plays CS Lewis. I have never cried so much at a film. In fact, I am not really a crier. This had me howling though for some reason.

Golden oldie black and white films like Casablanca, Now Voyager and Brief Encounter. I am that old but they are all real weepies.

Oreyt · 26/12/2024 18:45

The only films I can think of that made me cry is Otto and Ghost.

Frankbeverleyandthebutlers · 26/12/2024 19:00

A black and white film made about 1952 /54
Mandy its about a little deaf girl who can't speak or hear and a therapist takes time with her and eventually she's able to form words and communicate.
If you don't cry watching this there's something wrong with you.

popandchoc · 26/12/2024 19:03

Marley and me or a dogs purpose

maddiemookins16mum · 26/12/2024 19:10

Haatchi

or my all time favourite sobfest, Who Will Love my Children.

Michiru · 26/12/2024 19:18

Ladybird, Ladybird

About a mother who keeps losing her kids to SS. She is partially at fault, partially it's down to circumstances out of her control.

Gets me every time.

LordJohnGrey · 26/12/2024 19:18

Brokeback Mountain, scene with the shirts always has me sobbing.

ColinRobinsonsFart · 26/12/2024 19:36

The way we were
Midnight Cowboy
Kramer vs Kramer

I am a woman of a certain age and these are my go to films if I need a good skrike!

echt · 26/12/2024 19:57

Dean Spanley.

Artyblartfast · 27/12/2024 15:54

Watch the Holdovers. Just watched it thinking it was funny. I'm feeling all weepy now 😭

beguilingeyes · 27/12/2024 16:04

Truly, Madly, deeply

curlycurlymoo · 27/12/2024 16:07

Omg beaches or me before you.

WomensRightsRenegade · 27/12/2024 16:08

I didn’t shed a tear at any of the films mentioned except Stepmom.

But Shadowlands broke me

GogAndMagog · 27/12/2024 16:18

Little Women, the Winona Ryder one. 😢

theallotmentqueen · 27/12/2024 16:20

About Time! Not depressing, a very beautiful rom com, but so romantic and funny and nice it will get you in the gut

Collette78 · 27/12/2024 16:25

I randomly cried at the end of Home Alone the other day when the old man gets reunited with his family!

Apart from that:
The Creator
The Time Traveller’s Wife

TheLadyIsAVamp · 27/12/2024 16:35

@theallotmentqueen my favourite movie, watched it many times and it gets me every time. So underrated!

Manchester by the Sea

Oh God, yes. I think that's the saddest film I've ever seen. It haunted me for years. Most films, even the saddest
ones, are about overcoming problems but this is the only one I've ever seen about not being able to move on. So believable and heartbreaking .

I agree. It's his best film. I've watched it several times and it is always captivating. Such a beautiful story. And the ending!

You’ve had some great suggestions OP - we’re here to listen if you want to tell us anything.

my suggestion is Goodnight Mr Tom - it’s on ITVX

I found that almost unbearable to watch. Not just sad but too dark. The cupboard... I don't think I could bring myself to watch it again. It terrified me.

Urghto · 01/01/2025 02:05

The end of His Dark Materials, omg, traumatic

apapuchi · 01/01/2025 02:24

Seconding 'About Time' albeit too late. Hits all the emotional buttons and is a lovely film even if the premise is a little silly. It's a sad/positive film.

Cantthinkofonenow · 01/01/2025 02:33

No matter how many times I watch the green Mile I still cry.

The boy in the striped pyjamas was a powerful and sad film 😭
