I have a few hours to myself tomorrow and need a good cry. Any film recommendations?

Beaches
Prince of Tides
The way we Were
SteelMagnolias
Terms of Endearment
Step Mom
The King and I
Roman Holiday
The bridges of Madison County
White Christmas (even my teen GD cries)

Another vote for Up (first 5 mins, and then again at the end)

RampantIvy · 26/12/2024 08:50

The Railway Children
Empire of the Sun

@climbelon why do you need a good cry?
Do you want to offload on here?

Lion. I started crying at the beginning and didn't stop all the way through. Literally soaked through 3 packets of tissues. Also a true and beautiful story.

Definitely Lion. I avoid films like this usually. But it is lovely.

Million dollar baby

suki1964 · 26/12/2024 08:55

The Colour Purple
The Champ

RabbitsRock · 26/12/2024 08:57

Oh my goodness Warhorse - haven’t seen the film but the stage version affected me more deeply than anything I have ever experienced. I was sobbing & shaking at the end & DH didn’t know what to do!
The Railway Children gets me everytime
Lassie Come Home

Truly madly deeply

A monster calls - there was sniffing and sobs throughout the cinema when I went to watch this. I hadn’t realised what it was about and went with DH, whose mum had sadly died of breast cancer when he was young 😢

Allnewtometoo · 26/12/2024 08:58

Les Mis , always makes me cry.

Not Marley abs Me. That's the wrong sort of crying for me.

Lemonsandsunshine · 26/12/2024 09:00

Miss you already
Imitation of life (old but heartbreaking)
Also bizarrely Jojo rabbit which is a comedy but there's a scene so devastating my DH had to stop the film and just hold me as I cried.

duvetday0006 · 26/12/2024 09:01

Last Christmas - I think it’s on Netflix now if you have it. ❤️

TerrorAustralis · 26/12/2024 09:09

Steel Magnolias definitely. There’s a certain point where I start crying and I just don’t stop ‘til the end.
Lion, I pretty much cried through the whole thing. Just thinking about it makes me feel teary.
My Life Without Me
An Affair to Remember (v. old now)
A Star is Born (the Judy Garland, James Mason version)

Imitation of Life is an amazing film - my friends and I have talked about it often.
JoJo Rabbit was a great film too.

Davros · 26/12/2024 10:16

The Artist.

Don't watch Hatchi, it's great but traumatising

Funderthighs · 26/12/2024 10:22

Beaches & Bicentennial Man. They get me every time!

Crikey yes. I wasn't prepared for how sad it would be.

All of us strangers is a tough watch as well.

And my so sad I can't watch it again film, Philadelphia.

JadeSeahorse · 26/12/2024 10:27

If you like Downton Abbey type things then definitely The Duchess. It's a true story!

I'm not a Keira Knightly fan but have to say she was excellent in this.

I was a sobbing wreck at the end.

I went on a first date to see war horse in the cinema. Would not recommend sobbing hysterically as a way of making a good first impression!

About time is my go to crying film

nodramaplz · 26/12/2024 10:29

P.s I love you

Tragicmun · 26/12/2024 10:30

Hope Floats - I seriously thought I would have to leave the cinema as I was sobbing so much and couldn't take much more

Jellycatspyjamas · 26/12/2024 11:02

Yes I loved this movie but my goodness that scene was so sad.

CMOTDibbler · 26/12/2024 11:21

Steel Magnolias. Since I read that the writer based it on his sisters life (and death) it makes me cry all the more
