I have a few hours to myself tomorrow and need a good cry. Any film recommendations?

Another vote for Lion. I'm pretty hard hearted when it comes to films and crying but my God, I sobbed for lots of it.

Miss you already
Imitation of life (old but heartbreaking)
Also bizarrely Jojo rabbit which is a comedy but there's a scene so devastating my DH had to stop the film and just hold me as I cried.

Agree with Jojo Rabbit!
I couldn't stop after that scene lol. Even the ending which was more uplifting started me off again.

Already been said a few times but definitely Lion.

Black Adder Over the Top - had me howling.

Was also pretty upset at Downton Abbey one Christmas when a certain character dies (won't ruin it for people who may not have watched!)

Pohgi · 26/12/2024 14:49

The history boys and dead poets society always makes me cry

StiggyZardust · 26/12/2024 14:59

Shadowlands

Haven't read the full thread but Nowhere Special with James Norton playing the terminally ill single father of a pre-schooler, set in Northern Ireland. He plays a working class window cleaner, complete with tattoos.

Another vote for The Imitation Of Life.

Ceebeegee · 26/12/2024 16:32

The Pianist.

Another vote for One Life. Or even just the YouTube video of the real Mr Winston and the audience.

Roselilly36 · 26/12/2024 16:37

Hachi: A Dog's Tale Richard Gere, cried my eyes out.
Beaches also

BabCNesbitt · 26/12/2024 16:39

Seconding Coco; had to excuse myself from the room so I didn’t break down in front of 5-year-old DD (who didn’t understand what all the fuss was about). And also seconding Truly Mary Deeply and All Of Us Strangers.

OrsolaRosso · 26/12/2024 16:41

Last Christmas. Emilia Clark. Properly sobbed 😭

EatTheBastard · 26/12/2024 16:41

You’ve had some great suggestions OP - we’re here to listen if you want to tell us anything.

my suggestion is Goodnight Mr Tom - it’s on ITVX

2025willbemytime · 26/12/2024 16:43

I need this thread. I just watched an episode of The Rookie and cried 🙄

Gone12 · 26/12/2024 16:46

Beaches..especially near the end when the horse gallops along the beach towards the sunset.

FoFanta · 26/12/2024 16:51

I second Aftersun. I was a wreck watching it. And Coco, sobbed nearly all the way through.

Tootingbec · 26/12/2024 16:54

Atonement - lost count of the number of times I have watched it and it still makes me weep.

Beautifully filmed and acted - exquisitely romantic and sad in equal measure.
