Is there a way to hide someone else's photo on WhatsApp?

I've tried googling but it just tells me how to hide mine which is not what I asked.

Why do you want to hide it?

2025willbemytime · 24/12/2024 06:27

Because I don't want to see it.

Why?

2025willbemytime · 24/12/2024 06:33

I need to be able to send and receive messages. I just don't want to see their face.

Block and delete them ?

Presumably she either wants to needs to communicate with the person or the question wouldnt need to be asked

Redcrayons · 24/12/2024 06:35

do you mean hide so you never see them, or just once they’ve posted? I regularly delete photos from WhatsApp to save on storage space.

2025willbemytime · 24/12/2024 06:37

I want it so their profile photo isn't visible to me. It is always there whether they have messaged me or not.

Not possible but you could just communicate by normal text message instead. You would have to block them on WhatsApp though or they could continue to message you on there.

Oreyt · 24/12/2024 06:39

No this isn't a feature.

Can you block on what's app and say you no longer have it and ask them to text you instead?

hunchedover · 24/12/2024 06:44

Delete the number but keep the chat

WillYouDoTheFandango · 24/12/2024 06:44

You could archive them so you only have to look at it when you go to message them.

I did this before but then had to go and look to see if they had messaged me which actually was a pain. @WillYouDoTheFandango

Deleting the number. - do I just delete them as a contact? What happens to WA and text messages then please? @hunchedover

I can easily imagine a scenario where you would want this. Communicating with an ex over childcare, for example.

SheilaFentiman · 24/12/2024 07:24

If you create a group chat with them, you can give the chat an icon or photo - eg if it is an ex you could call it Fred’s Parent Chat and give the chat a picture of Fred.

Will they know I've made us a group etc?

Don't do this.

You will still see the persons photo within the group chat, and yes, they'll see you've created a group.

IBlameTheDog · 24/12/2024 07:55

I want to do this too.

I wonder if deleting them as a contact and deleting the chat with them would work?

I did put them in archived but I kept missing messages from them which put me in a whole heap of trouble!

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 24/12/2024 07:57

If their settings state they share their pictures with contacts then so long as you’re a contact for them, you’ll see their picture regardless of whether you delete their number.

some also have it public regardless of whether you’re a contact or not.

It would stop their picture appearing in your chat list, as the group icon would appear, but PP is right that you would see it within the group chat.

They would know you had made the group, yes - as I don’t know why you don’t want to see it (which is fair enough!) then I don’t know if they would be amenable to a group. For example, I have an agreed group with DH specifically to discuss holiday plans so that it doesn’t get lost in the general “have you put the bins out?” chat.

So if you have a reason of some kind you can share with them eg making sure important schedule updates aren’t lost, then this could work. If they need not to know they are in a group, then it won’t.

Ivyy · 24/12/2024 08:10

I don't think it's possible op, you could try deleting them as a contact on WhatsApp or unsyncing them in contacts, if that doesn't work it might be better to text and then you're able to set your own choice of pic for them.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/12/2024 08:28

Buy a swizzle stick (see photo) and keep it by your compter, you can then move it around to cover the profile picture at will, whilst still reading other content.

Top Tip: if viewing on a phone use the round bobbley end as the flat end may be too large.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 24/12/2024 08:44

No, there's no way to do this.
You could start texting instead of using WhatsApp. Tell them you had to delete WhatsApp or something. Switch to normal texts.

ChristmasPudd1990 · 24/12/2024 08:44

Can you mute?

ChocolateTruffleAssortment · 24/12/2024 08:50

If you delete them as a contact their settings might mean you don’t see their photo any more.
