I’m getting increasingly baffled by perfume adverts

I know it’s supposed to be showing the luxurious lifestyle that will instantly be yours if you squirt some on, but surely it would be nice to know what it actually smells like ? I realise a scent is hard to describe, but they could have a go - floral, musky, citrus, woody, at least give us a clue !

We always laugh at perfume adverts, they're so rubbish. They seem to be about 20 years behind the rest of society 😄.

They are the oddest thing - surreal and to my mind a huge waste of money (and I once worked in advertising). I reckon mentions and promotions in magazines are far more effective. Everyone in a perfume ad just looks like a right plonker.

Well what does the brand smell like ? They might as well fill the bottle with water !

That Chanel one with Margot Robbie. I get that they misread each others texts and each go to the other's house, but why is she then in a swimsuit in the sea? Baffling.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/12/2024 17:23

We used to make guesses at what the perfume would smell like, based on the ads. According to us, most perfume must smell of sweat, petrol and hot horses..

murasaki · 22/12/2024 17:23

Also the good girl/ bad boy Caroline Herrara one enrages me. Way to stereotype.

username299 · 22/12/2024 17:24

They're normally a load of pretentious crap.

Monvelo · 22/12/2024 17:25

My kids age 7 & 10 have taken to acting them out and making up their own. It's very funny!

My DH reckons the weirder the ad the more likely we are to remember the product. A case in point is here, we are discussing them. However, these ads do not make me want to buy the perfumes and surely that is the point of advertising?

Oh that one makes me want to defenestrate the TV.

But what are we supposed to be aspiring too . The ads are so abstract . And it’s perfume , which presumably you need to at least find the smell of bearable. No one aspires to smell rank, surely they could describe the actual scent if they’re flogging it

I suspect they are aimed at men buying perfume very late as presents for their wives. Hence the focus on the brand and name being memorable, and the smell being irrelevant to the men.

To be fair they seem to have dropped it, the new one is bad but not as utterly dreadful as the vacuous models just repeating the word Daisy. Whoever thought that one up needs a kicking.

Lillith111 · 22/12/2024 17:34

@CottagersCheese what are “woke faces”

fivebyfivebuffy · 22/12/2024 17:35

Just use Fragrantica to see the scent notes and reviews

SiobhanSharpe · 22/12/2024 17:40

I always think the Marc Jacobs perfume 'brand' is aimed squarely at 14 year olds -- the daft adverts, the hideous bottles with oversized, stylised daisies attached and the total lack of information about what the contents actually smell like.
At least some other perfume ads do describe the scents even if only briefly.

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 22/12/2024 17:54

I don't think they're particularly aspirational; they're usually very much through the male lens / denigrating towards women.

Mochudubh · 22/12/2024 17:58

I was thinking the other day that the idea is if a woman (or man) fancies Chris Hemsworth, she'll buy her partner that perfume. If a bloke (or woman) fancies Rhianna they'll buy that perfume. If your DP can't BE Chris Hemsworth, he can at least smell like him, or something.

I personally don't get the Adam Driver one where he runs into the sea with horses as I think Adam Driver looks like a spotty fifth former, but maybe that's just me.

The Natalie Portman one where she mimes to Janis Joplin is also very irritating.

I think the sea is in the background when you first see him? So maybe she goes for a swim whilst she waits for him at his? But then that would just wash the perfume off so.....

Thanks, I’ll try that. I’m not into high end fashion so don’t get what most of the brands are supposed to represent, but I do like perfume . Seems strange they spend millions on these ads then you still need to do your own research to find out what it smells like!

This! It drives me crazy.

Where is the Parisian glamour I want from Chanel??

Well that's a mystery solved thank you!! I've had no idea what that advert was about. I love the Daft Punk song though.
