Placemarking as I love a good Christmas substitution thread.

Sainsbury's did a grand job for us this year, one sub which was bread sauce for bread sauce 🤷

AThousandStarlings · 22/12/2024 10:45

Turkey (Xl for 15 people) substituted for a pack of frozen fish fingers !

Omg. Are you joking . Are you able to grt hold of a turkey on time ?

Maybe I'm over thinking . But I think Asda should be help accountable for silly things like this. The the fact of no common sense. What is the person needing the turkey is disabled or simlar and can't get out.

Sainsbury's just sent me a pot of garlic butter instead of squirty cream!!!😂

PickleSarnie · 22/12/2024 12:36

Ocado delivery arrived this morning. Only sub was pork joint for slightly different pork joint. Weirdly one missing item which was a sharing bag of salt and vinegar crisps and I'm surprised there wasn't an alternative to that. Perhaps it's a hint I need to cut down on crisps.

Ocado rarely do substitutions and, when they do, they aren't ridiculous.

xmascrackerr · 22/12/2024 12:38

I ordered sticky toffee pudding and they subbed it for apple pie 🤮 that got returned and I picked one up in M&S when collecting the turkey.

Worst one I ever had was femfresh instead of deodorant..you mean to tell me there was no other deodorants in the entire store!

daisychain01 · 22/12/2024 12:39

I always tick the box for No Substitutes.

Id rather have nothing than the daft useless things they expect you to accept.

Who orders their turkey in their online shop though? Massive risk.

BitchImTheSecretIngredient · 22/12/2024 13:09

Im a picker for online. The system sometimes suggests stupid subs (sticky toffee pudding instead of custard today) so I override those ones and choose something appropriate. The shop floor was absolute chaos this morning and we're timed on our shops so you need to be fast. Probably why people choose silly things sometimes

It isn't a risk with Tesco. You have to have to preorder some particular Christmas foods, including turkey and you can't change it after the closing date - I think it's usually Dec 14th. They order those items specifically for you, it's not the pickers wandering around on the off chance that there is turkey left on the shelves.

Sort of get close to christmas . Kind of i mean some silly christmas choices could ruin someone's christmas. And common sense should step in. Obviously in your case you over ride . But often others don't. I found asda really bad for it.

I know the pickers at Tesco are under a lot of time pressure and often start at 4 in the morning this time of year. Do you think they have time to wander the shop looking for the perfect sub? Subs are suggested to them anyway. So state no subs if you don't want them.

Edited

At our Sainsbury's they start at 4am every day of the week, all year and yes, they are timed so no time to ponder a better alternative.
The only difference at Christmas is that they have an influx of temporary staff.

Expect it is the same everywhere.

PandaCwtch · 22/12/2024 13:37

If the shop layout isn't bonkers, they wouldn't be wandering about the shop. Appropriate substitutions are more likely to be in close physical proximity to the desired product than anywhere else. Examples above include femfresh for deodorant - brand A of deodorant is going to be next to brand B, spray form of brand A might be above stick form of brand A. Femfresh is going to be halfway down the aisle. Same for big turkey v fishfingers - different size/brand of turkeys are going to be together, not interspersed with fishfingers.

AnyoneSomeone · 22/12/2024 13:44

In normal times the pickers are allowed off sale and send no sub if there is nothing suitable. At Christmas they have to sub with something.

I4gotmyname · 22/12/2024 14:41

If supermarkets can't offer reasonable subs they they should not offer them at all . Fish fingers instead of Turkey that's a piss take.

AThousandStarlings · 22/12/2024 19:05

It was a frozen turkey substituted for frozen fish fingers. Luckily I ordered well in advance so had time to order another (and still have 3 days to defrost it). Frozen turkeys are cheaper. With long working hours, a long commute and all sorts of caring responsibilities the xmas shop is always online - and I always end up hosting.

TartanMammy · 22/12/2024 19:18

After eights subbed for 2 boxes of match makers - fine. Except I also ordered matchmakers so now have 3 boxes of those, instead of one of each.

SignificantSalamander · 22/12/2024 19:28

Were there enough fish fingers to feed 15 people though?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/12/2024 19:31

Regular coffee for decaf coffee.

Redsparklybucket · 22/12/2024 19:35

Sainsburys subbed gluten free puff pastry for garlic and herb focaccia- also gluten free but won’t make very good sausage rolls so back it went! Still hunting for some now!

Justploddingonandon · 22/12/2024 19:37

No subs but Ocado failed to deliver carrots and semi skimmed milk. I cannot believe they had none of these of any variety in the warehouse (fortunately both are easily got if more expensive from my local shop so don't have to brave the big supermarket).

Oh no. What did you feed them? 1 fish finger each? 🤣

JohnTheRevelator · 22/12/2024 22:58

Full-sugar coke for diet coke.

Ginkypig · 23/12/2024 10:31

So just had my receipt for the delivery due today.

not too bad at all. 3 subs but all workable!

bacon substituted with a different brand of bacon (not as good as this one had added water but it’s fine!)

jus roll puff pastry substituted with 2 packs of supermarket own brand puff pastry. That will still work fine for the leftover Boxing Day pies.

1 400g packet of sprouts substituted for 2 packs off 200g of sprouts.

I am very relieved. Now I don’t have to rush out to get replace anything. I managed to get the washing up liquid that I mentioned on Saturday.

so really all I have not managed to get is
cheeselets (unavailable at last shop)

cheesy footballs (didn’t find them anywhere to buy this year!

and worse I couldn’t find any cheese truckles on the day I went to Lidl but I have some cheddar and that will be lovely on crackers.

iam sorry to everyone who has had really bad subs this year. A special thought to @AThousandStarlings and the fishfingers!
