Did you know, meet or see anyone perform before they were famous?

Another Level performed at my school before they made it and I remember Roxy from Eastenders being part of the support act for a Steps concert c2000

There's no-one in Aha called Ben 😁

Edited

I used to work with Gugu Mbatha-Raw before she became a very successful actress. She was (and still is, I’m sure) absolutely fabulous. Sweet, funny, intelligent and charismatic. And staggeringly beautiful.

Not before he was famous but I saw Ed Sheeran at the Hull Ice arena….its makes me laugh it was one of his tour stops now, when he’s in Wembley 😂

Spidey66 · 21/12/2024 10:45

Tamsin Greig used to sit next to me in Malorees infants in Kilburn. We went to each others birthday parties. It's been 50+years but from what I remember she was very nice.

Tamsin if you're reading this....hi!

Saw Joe Lycett perform an Edinburgh preview in a tiny pub room to about 15 people about 10 years ago (he was very funny).

Also saw Chris McCausland perform in a line up at a comedy club in London about 15years ago, relatively small audience, he was the best on the bill.

When l was in my last year at junior school we had to befriend one of the new children who had just started their first year. Look after them at playtime .
My friend was called Jane Mcdonald.
She ended up going to same high school too.
I can now see her bungalow from my house.

That would be The Boat Club or the Brit. Loads of upcoming bands/artists used to play there then, Rod Stewart, Chris Farlow, Amen Corner, Elton John etc and later on Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols, Led Zepplin.

The Boat actually became the richest boat club in UK off the back of using the club as a music venue.

Yes!! My sisters were always talking about the Brit, still do. They’re in their 70s now.
I’m a lot younger and was a Rock City girl. I saw some great bands but never the massive names they saw.

My husband's youngest cousin went on a Raleigh International expedition to South America. He came back with frostbite on his toes. My MiL, his auntie made him pull off his sock and show her. It was a bit awkward.

Guess who was on his Raleigh International expedition ... (hint: 'She was lovely')

No idea...

Oh, dear. The OP did not strike me as forbidding a guessing game but also, it didn't seem like too tricky a stretch.
Well done, @Startinganew32 , it was indeed Kate Middleton.

Probably easy for people who follow the royals. Seems lots of us don't. I was thinking it might be some relative of Stevie Wonder.

MorrisZapp · 21/12/2024 14:11

I bought Chris McAusland a pint after his first Edinburgh festival gig, must have been about 11 years ago. Tiny venue, tenner a ticket job. He was so chuffed because he had no idea how his material would come across in Scotland, he was lovely.

I’ve known Roxy since she was a little girl and still see her around now.

I went to primary school with the actor Ollie Rix. He was even more gorgeous back then (but I was 8 and easily wowed at the time 😂)

MirrorMirror70 · 21/12/2024 14:27

I went to uni with Rob Beckett. I only vaguely knew him through friends, but he was a nice bloke. Popular without being a dick.

Sarah Lancashire
Brian Cox ( the astronomer)
Shoabna Gulati

Deadringer · 21/12/2024 14:55

My mate snogged Sinead O'connor when they were both about 16.

Ahem, I said Kate Middleton last night before anyone else! 😜

I saw mud in the local town hall in 1973. The tickets were 80 pence. They were fab .

PickledOwl1 · 21/12/2024 20:14

I lived next door to the guy who was in the Toys R Us advert - the one where he'd cycle down the road singing ' I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys R Us kid'

So top THAT!

PickledOwl1 · 21/12/2024 20:17

Oh and my brother was friends with Gaz Coombs at school who I'd often step over on the living room floor on a Sunday morning (back when we lived with our parents of course!)

Dearg · 21/12/2024 20:18

Secret Affair; Simple Minds; Eurythmics; Pretenders; the Undertones ; all at Uni Union before they made it big (biggish in the case of Secret Affair.)

If I remember correctly, I saw the Pretenders the same week that Brass in Pocket hit number 1. Eurythmics and Simple Minds were spectacular, but pretty niche at the time.

I think Madness played too, but I don’t remember whether I was actually there or not. ( which sounds more interesting that it was)

shivbo2014 · 21/12/2024 20:23

Steps came to an under 18 club in Watford before they were famous. This place usually played house and garage, and when Steps started performing, everyone was laughing and walked off. It was so awkward. They were actually good, but I don't think that venue was the best choice!

Bobbinette · 21/12/2024 20:25

Me and my friend used to go and see The Charlatans before they were famous. They used to play small gigs in a local cafe in Walsall. The A&R men decided that they needed a different frontman so Tim Burgess was brought in to make them more appealing to the Madchester crowd. My friend dated the bass player for a while and he even came to our housewarming party. Their careers soon took off and suddenly they were massive. Still feel sorry for the original front guy though.

TheDogIsInCharge · 21/12/2024 20:25

I shagged Daniel Craig just as he was on the cusp of stardom However, he was not thought of as particularly attractive at the time, playing a rough homeless guy in My Friends In The North. I obviously fancied him though...

He was FABULOUS. 10/10. No notes
