Thread 16 - TalkLair: "Well, I'm not exactly quaking in my stylish-yet-affordable boots, but there's definitely something unnatural going on here."

(Previous thread 15).

Another year over, a new one just begun...

In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, the walls festooned with tinsel, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors, the tree is twinkling with fairy lights (and possibly being clambered on by cats). The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics.

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey Christmas roast beast over there in the corner of the cave…

I assume you do need to enter some text, to avoid people just spamming the site with ads or whatever?

You can only add a picture to a written a post, not post a standalone picture.

Britinme · 16/01/2025 03:49

Well I guess that's me taught!

Speedy recovery Sinner!

I can’t imagine being too scared to ask a bus driver to stop a bus!

I remember an incident of utter stupidity that is kind of the opposite of that though. On my way to work one morning, the train went through Clapham Junction without stopping (no great surprise, it wasn’t meant to stop there) and a woman who was definitely old enough to know better pulled the alarm cord. When the guard reached our carriage on his rounds of trying to find out what the emergency was, she said she’d pulled the cord because the train hadn’t stopped. He pointed out that the cord was meant for emergencies and that the train wasn’t meant to stop there anyway. She said it was an emergency as she would be late for work. Clearly having stopped the train she was even later and she ensured that many if her fellow passengers were late for work too.

I was recently on a train that was meant to go to point A and went to point B because the points had been set wrongly. It was only a short journey, but we got thrown off at B and had to make our own way to A.

That is really shit service!

I've been on a train where they just forgot to stop at one of the stations, just cruised slowly through it and continued on to the terminus. That was most peculiar. All the passengers who wanted that stop were given a token (or something) to go back on the next train.

Hmm. I'm sensing a theme in my public transport experiences.

That's lovely! So often reading MN makes parenting seems to be regarded as a right vale of tears that rots your mind and ruins your body. It's nice to be reminded of its joys also.

That’s not good!

On one of my many train fails when commuting, one morning we ended up being bussed from a nearby town as the train had been redirected. Even though there was plenty of space on the bus, a colleague with a bicycle was told he couldn’t bring his bike on the bus. As the bus crept very slowly up a long hill we realised that our speed was being seriously constrained by the fact that we were stuck behind said colleague cycling up the hill. He pulled over where he could to let the bus pass. I’m not sure I’d have been that generous.

FagsMagsandBags · 18/01/2025 23:22

The twins video is hilarious. Tie them together then cover it with something so that you don't look like the abusive parents you are. Jobs a good 'un!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/01/2025 13:58

1-0 to the leopard, after an excellent ambush.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/01/2025 14:23

I want to know what happened when it went back in the tub.

SinnerBoy · 19/01/2025 14:58

The leopard and the ones above are super!

Britinme · 19/01/2025 16:17

We're just starting to figure out the transport part of our holiday in France this year - accommodation is booked via Vrbo (a week each in the Dordogne, the Loire valley and Normandy) but flights were turning out complex so we decided that as we had to use a plane to cross the Atlantic, we'll use the train to go UK to France and back - just need to sort out the details. Part of the fun of our holidays is figuring out those! And for those who remember denizens of the old place, we will be seeing Tethys and also Faz (Fawaz, but I can't remember what his old username was) while we're there. Last year when we went to Prince Edward Island we got together with antimatter from the old place - DH still goes on JTT threads so stays in touch with people.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/01/2025 16:44

I remember Fawaz being Fawaz at the old place. He's a good bloke and we're still in touch.

Britinme · 19/01/2025 16:55

It turns out that where we're going first in France is only an hour or so away from them, and we have an invitation to stay for a couple of days before our rental starts. Looking forward to it!

duc748 · 19/01/2025 17:00

That sounds lovely, although I can't say I remember Faz or Tethys.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/01/2025 17:06

Ooh, it'll be lovely, Brit. We've been invited to Fawaz's place and haven't had the chance to visit yet but I've seen photos and it looks gorgeous.

FagsMagsandBags · 19/01/2025 21:19

I remember them both and his name has come up as someone for me to friend on Facebook recently and I wondered why, then saw that you and he are friends, @Britinme so figured that must be why. They're good people and nearer the time I'll ask you to send them my love.

I love the snow leopard and the cabbage. It's like he's a sous chef just shredding the life out of that cabbage. My take is he disappears into the barrel so that no one can see him being a vegetarian and eats every last leaf of it.

Gonners · 19/01/2025 21:52

I love the idea of a vegetarian snow-leopard.

FagsMagsandBags · 19/01/2025 23:39

He was thinking of going vegan but oh my god he loves the cheese!
