Thread 16 - TalkLair: "Well, I'm not exactly quaking in my stylish-yet-affordable boots, but there's definitely something unnatural going on here."

(Previous thread 15).

Another year over, a new one just begun...

In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, the walls festooned with tinsel, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors, the tree is twinkling with fairy lights (and possibly being clambered on by cats). The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics.

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey Christmas roast beast over there in the corner of the cave…

Love that quote Grin

Lovely lair, delightful denizens, delicious Christmas prey.

Thanks @Kucinghitam

Thanks, I used to love that series.

weaseleyes · 19/12/2024 10:41

I got to introduce my daughter to Buffy a couple of years ago. It was a joy!

SinnerBoy · 19/12/2024 10:57

I've just been Whammed, I am much aggrieved! It was at my daughter's school Christmas assembly. They had music with the lyrics projected onto the wall; all the others were music only, apart from bloody Last Christmas!

They had a group reading I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day and they projected the title, spelled Everyday.

I feel a stern email coming on!

😃

artant · 19/12/2024 11:59

As of last night, there are even Christmas lights twinkling in my house!

I have not been Whammed though (I don’t get out much). I will need to go to actual shops before Christmas so I fully expect Whamming to happen then.

I got to introduce my daughter to Buffy a couple of years ago. It was a joy!

We just started DDs on Buffy this autumn - they're completely hooked and think it's the Best Thing Ever! I've really enjoyed watching their reactions to key plot developments...

(DH and I were discussing whether to even acknowledge anything after Season 5, because we both agree that the last two seasons were not as good).

I never took to Buffy, an ex watched religiously. By my second episode of Ally McBeal, I was hooked and pestered her, to be sure it was recorded.

weaseleyes · 19/12/2024 13:13

Not sure I'd be as keen on encouraging my daughter to avidly watch Ally McBeal! I'd rather hold up an arse-kicking role model for compulsory viewing.

I know what you mean, kuc, particularly the dire last season, but worth putting her through it for the final episode, which makes me weep every time at the thought of girls all over the world becoming strong. Obviously my daughter didn't weep, being made of stronger stuff.

SinnerBoy · 19/12/2024 13:17

We've watched Friday Night Dinner and have almost finished Outnumbered. She keeps pestering me to watch Stranger Things and The Inbetweeners - at 11, that's a firm no!

I haven't watched Ally McBeal with her, I watched that with an ex.

weaseleyes · 19/12/2024 13:25

I was just reflecting on the difference in female protagonists 😀 My daughter watches all manner of rubbish, as do I, but I feel unable to recommend something with a female lead which exasperates me. Of course, I then found out I was recommending yet another programme where the director had been sleazier than was commonly known at the time. Sometimes that feels like everything

Britinme · 19/12/2024 13:28

I've never seen Buffy! I remember my DD liking it though. Thanks for new thread Kuc.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 19/12/2024 13:31

Not a tv series but my favourite female protagonist is Ellen Ripley from the Aliens films. A real bad ass.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 19/12/2024 13:38

Thanks for the new thread - how about the Gilmore Girls? Rory is a bit annoying sometimes but she's clever, and her best friend whose name escapes me, is great.

weaseleyes · 19/12/2024 15:48

Gilmore Girls is my daughter's deepest love. Rory is pretty annoying, though saying so is seen as heresy in my household - and I was interested to see how she turned out in the many years later sequel.

SinnerBoy · 19/12/2024 19:24

We've been watching GG, but my daughter asked for a break and to watch something else. I enjoyed Anne With an E, watching with her, it's always a bit hit or miss about what we'll both like.

We watched th last episode of Outnumbered just now and she asked to have a watch of the very first episode, to see how the kids were and I fast forwarded it, stopping when I saw Karen.

On pressing play, she immediately said, TWAT

We cracked up!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 19/12/2024 19:32

There are some.good bits of Buffy after season 5, but it's a definite step down from the earlier ones.

FagsMagsandBags · 19/12/2024 22:30

I loved Gilmore Girls, but Rory was an entitled little mare and her taste in men when it came to bloody Logan was atrocious. That said Lorelai was also a bit of an idiot getting back with her ex, Luke was problematic but I did love it.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 20/12/2024 13:51

We watched the Wedding from S1 of Outnumbered last night - gosh it was funny.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 20/12/2024 15:43

This is sweet, children in 1969 talking about Christmas. They'd have been born about the same time as me and remind of kids I went to school with.

Sonolanona · 21/12/2024 00:52

Buffy is my 'if I have dementia and am in a nursing home just put it on a loop' that and Grey's Anatomy ... just the theme tune to either and I'll be happy,

My DD1 started watching it when she was 10 thanks to a friend... introduced me and we were hooked. We can quote it endlessly ... she's 32 now and I'm a lot older and we still love it!

Kucinghitam · 21/12/2024 07:30

@Sonolanona Buffy is my 'if I have dementia and am in a nursing home just put it on a loop'

OMG yes Grin

Joss Whedon is an absolute sleazy shitbag (like so many Hollywood men, eh?) but he always could write absolutely brilliant dialogue. We are thinking DDs will like Firefly (and possibly Dollhouse) as they get a bit older.

I must confess I never really got into Grey's Anatomy or Gilmore Girls. But based on the recommendations of this thread, maybe I should!
