Bargain food that is actually delicious

We have been searching for the holy grail - affordable tasty baked beans, and I think I've finally found them. Asda own brand. What other affordable tasty treats are in the own brand and smart price aisle from any supermarket that you choose over the premium version?

Asda own brand beans are the best, completely agree!

Terrribletwos · 12/12/2024 17:52

Branstons beans are actually okish

Movinghouseatlast · 12/12/2024 17:52

Well, lentil soup is greater than the sum of its parts. Fried onion, dried red lentils, tin of tomatoes. Boil the fuck out of it. Add a bit of chilli if feeling fancy.

Breast of lamb

Shin of beef

Properly cooked, both are delicious.

I like Branston beans but it annoys the hell out of me that the multipacks don't come with a ring pull top.

Prefer the budget / value salted tortilla chips over the expensive brands.
Love tinned potatoes!
Prefer the supermarket version of marmite.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/12/2024 17:56

Don't mind a value tin of mushy peas too!

FuckOffCleanShirt · 12/12/2024 17:57

I used to love Sunblest corn flakes. Cheap as chips and tasted amazing. I don't think they exist anymore. And supermarket own brands (even the super basic ones) are actually too close to Kellogg's for my liking. Bastards.

Highlyrecommended999 · 12/12/2024 17:57

Lentil and bacon soup!

Oh me too. Always so, so salty 🤗

19p white bread. Best toast ever

Yes! I am a salt FIEND 😂

Aldi's chocolate covered Oaties, which are their 'homage to' HobNobs. 77p a pack. Superb.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/12/2024 18:02

I used to get the cheapest baked beans (I think 10p at the time) and fry onions, garlic and chilli before adding the beans and cooking for ages on low. It made them taste quite luxurious!
Baked beans are great though. I haven't tried Asda ones as we don't have one locally.

DrCoconut · 12/12/2024 18:04

DS loves Aldi instant noodles

Similar here - heaps of onions, whatever veg I have, curry powder, then add baked beans once softened. Delicious!

Koka noodles are an amazing value noodles brand too! It wasn't long ago they were 25p a pack but with COL think they're around 40p a pack now...

I have a lentil and roasted veg soup recipe that I've been making every week I'm so addicted to it!

BobbyBiscuits · 12/12/2024 18:11

@TheWayTheLightFalls That plus dodgy plastic sliced 2p a loaf bread from Kwik save. Toasted to death you can't really tell how shite it is. 🤣

Both Aldi's and Lidl's are much better than Hobnobs which are too sweet imo.

I buy very little branded food now. Aldi marmite and salad cream tastes the same as the brands. Their frozen pretend McDonald's stuff is really good. Oh and the Christmas stuff is wonderful!

I've got very sensitive skin but get on with Aldi laundry detergent, their shower gel is excellent and half the price of Sanex. I just wish my two DCats liked the cat food.

I bought a ton of stuff there last weekend and by comparison only got 2 bags for £100 in Morrisons. So in the New Year I'm no longer going there!

Sorry I'm maybe not understanding correctly- are you saying it cost you £100 for 2 bags of general shopping from Morrisons?

Morrisons is really expensive so I can believe that.

Well that's why I was wondering if I wasnt getting it right because I shop there and can get 3 bags for no more than around £40 but obviously dont know what sort of things the other shopper buys. That's just general groceries, dont tend to get much from the body/bath section, no pet food and no alcohol.

Sadsadworld · 12/12/2024 18:26

A baked potato, done in the oven, with butter& salt. Delicious.
