Bargain food that is actually delicious

We have been searching for the holy grail - affordable tasty baked beans, and I think I've finally found them. Asda own brand. What other affordable tasty treats are in the own brand and smart price aisle from any supermarket that you choose over the premium version?

Well, lentil soup is greater than the sum of its parts. Fried onion, dried red lentils, tin of tomatoes. Boil the fuck out of it. Add a bit of chilli if feeling fancy.

I add mushrooms and mixed herbs.

I love lamb breast but it's so hard to find now.
To add to the bargains, chicken livers.

Weird literally cane on to say this. Chicken livers fried with bacon and balsamic is my go to no money meal.

I actually had the urge for lamb breast last weekend. A piece that said it fed 3 - 4 (hmm) cost £6.30 in Sainsburys. Was delicious and made it last for 3 meals although could have wolfed the lot in a day. Easily.

Chicken thigh portions are reasonable. You can do loads with them and it's 50p a thigh.

I generally use chicken livers to make dirty rice, it's a great dish.
Agree with you on the chicken thighs, best cut if you ask ne.

Aldi version of Pringles. Stackers I think they’re called. Much nicer than the real thing.

Tel12 · 12/12/2024 22:54

Lentil stew. Onions, carrots, potato, can of tomatoes and anything else you want to use up along with some lentils. It's really good and even better the next day.

The cheaper the bourbon biscuit the better for me!

I like Branston beans but it annoys the hell out of me that the multipacks don't come with a ring pull top.

Great beans, but their tins are always rusted inside, they haven't answered our complaint about this either, and it is dangerous to eat them with this.

Another vote for asda.

I'll always be a huge fan of a tinned potato!

Yes! They work better than fresh potatoes in the slow cooker

Lidl froggles crisps - nicer than Pom bears

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 12/12/2024 23:05

Df used to love those! I can't stand them because they're full of salt, and nasty little things! Ty for bringing a smile to my face, about my lovely dad. He was very fond of pies in tins as well, and would proudly rave about them.

I have a lentil and roasted veg soup recipe that I've been making every week I'm so addicted to it!

Please share! Sounds delicious!

StMarie4me · 12/12/2024 23:29

@ChristmasfoodisOverrated what makes you think they're full of salt?

I used to try my dad's as a child and they tasted it; they were in a salt water to preserve them in the tin? I never liked them. Bearing in mind this was the 90s! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Tesco cream of tomato soup instead of Heinz. Top tier with some added grated cheese and a cheese toasties on the side for dunking!.

The Asda Just Essentials tomato soup tastes identical to Heinz.

So does the Tesco own brand 65p version. I love Heinz tomato soup and I stopped buying it ages ago. DD accidentally picked up a tin of Tesco tomato instead of her minestrone so I thought I’d give it a go. I genuinely couldn’t tell the difference. I’m gutted I wasted so long being a soup snob 😂

I used to love Sunblest corn flakes. Cheap as chips and tasted amazing. I don't think they exist anymore. And supermarket own brands (even the super basic ones) are actually too close to Kellogg's for my liking. Bastards.

Asda used to do really cheap cornflakes. They didn't even come in a box, just a plastic bag, like the bag inside a cereal box, with the info printed on the bag.

Can't explain why they were so nice but they just were. They were more yellowy than normal cornflakes, very much yellow as opposed to orange, and a bit softer I think.

If anybody knows of anywhere they still does that type of thing let me know!

I must admit I’ve recently moved to new potatoes in glass jars when I can find them, as I think they have a better flavour. Coat in olive oil or goose grease and then on a baking tray in oven while roasting a chicken, honestly you hardly know they are from the store cupboard.

Rinse them to get the "tinned" taste off.
Then gently coat in oil and seasoning of choice.
Cook in air fryer until done to your liking.
They're already ready to eat so you don't have to worry about them being fully cooked. Delicious.

narniabusiness · 13/12/2024 07:29

I prefer the after 8 style mints from the supermarket- Tesco’s and Asda both do them. The chocolate is crisp and the filling soft.

Pomodoro cherry tomatoes in juice - Aldi - 79p - absolutely raise any pasta sauce
