Bargain food that is actually delicious

We have been searching for the holy grail - affordable tasty baked beans, and I think I've finally found them. Asda own brand. What other affordable tasty treats are in the own brand and smart price aisle from any supermarket that you choose over the premium version?

Turkey dinosaurs. I could eat them in my sleep.

Breast of lamb

Shin of beef

Properly cooked, both are delicious.

I love lamb breast but it's so hard to find now.
To add to the bargains, chicken livers.

Aldi's chocolate covered Oaties, which are their 'homage to' HobNobs. 77p a pack. Superb.

I've eaten soooo many packets of these, in one go🤭

Well that's why I was wondering if I wasnt getting it right because I shop there and can get 3 bags for no more than around £40 but obviously dont know what sort of things the other shopper buys. That's just general groceries, dont tend to get much from the body/bath section, no pet food and no alcohol.

I've walked out of Morrisons with 3 bags, no alcohol, no pet food and the only bath stuff was baby bath and I'd spent£119 so can well believe it

Chana masala - an onion, a tin of toms, chickpeas and spices. Cheap and delicious.

Meadowfinch · 12/12/2024 18:37

Home made spicy parsnip soup, and home made brocolli & stilton soup.

Both great for using up Christmas left overs, veggies, cheese and small amounts of cream or cream fraiche. 🙂

Yes! Love Chana Masala!

Gigantes plaki, a Greek version with beans, is also good!

My husband loves these! Buys about five packets at a time because once he went there and there weren't any. (Possibly because he buys 5 packets at a time...)

I actually think both the Aldi and Lidl cheapest range of beans are better than their standard range. Heinz are too expensive now and they're watered down. I buy the Asda ones too and they are also good. My husband like the battered fish from Asda that is in the cheap yellow range. I find more expensive battered frozen fish greasy and too heavy on the batter.

TheMaskedSingSong · 12/12/2024 18:44

I'll always be a huge fan of a tinned potato!

I have a lentil and roasted veg soup recipe that I've been making every week I'm so addicted to it!

Would you mind sharing?

CocoapuffPuff · 12/12/2024 19:05

Tesco own brand dark chocolate digestives. Way less sweet than mcvities and about a third of the price. Yummy. Also the tesco choc chip digestives are bloody good too.

UnderTheStairs51 · 12/12/2024 19:17

The four pack of basic Aldi biscuits. Custard creams, bourbons, nice biscuits (much tastier than their appearance) and some other plain biscuit.

Think they are under a pound.

Great when the kids have friends over and an entire packet is demolished before you can count to 10.

Inmydreams88 · 12/12/2024 19:20

The Asda Just Essentials tomato soup tastes identical to Heinz.

fivebyfivebuffy · 12/12/2024 20:43

@80smonster sure it's this! Sometimes I add carrots in to the roasted bit, or celery with the onion. It's never turned out bad

I like Morrisons own beans. I find Aldis have too much juice.

Itiswatitisnt · 12/12/2024 22:08

Definitely the Asda BBeans for us, thick sauce and nice and tomatoey.

TwixForTea · 12/12/2024 22:24

I am a fan of tinned mackeral in brine - it’s a cheap way to eat oily fish. I grow parsely, dill and coriander at home, so I’ll make a salad with lemon, black pepper, mackeral, herbs and lettuce (or whatever salad is lying around) and eat it either with toast or with a tinned bean salad (that’s actually more expensive than the mackeral sometimes!).

LittleGreenDragons · 12/12/2024 22:24

I prefer the Asda beans and DD likes the Sainsbury’s. We've had the Sainsbury’s version for years.

Recently found Asda's version of chocolate digestives. I might start doing what PP's DH has done which won't help my waistline 😬

TomatoPumpkin · 12/12/2024 22:25

Lidl ketchup is incredible
