Are you in favour of the Royal Family?

DM and I were discussing this last night, she's now in her Eighties and used to really like the Queen (not so much Phillip for some reason) but now really isn't bothered and thinks the RF, as is, should be abolished . I've always been a Republican but I was surprised at DM as she always seemed very pro RF but actually was pro the late Queen.

IMHO it seems so past it's sell by date but I'd be interested to know others opinions.

Well I’ve just had a google which says the royal family costs each person in Uk £1.29 per year.
Im happy to pay that as it cheaper than a celebrity magazine. I view them like a soap opera; something we all know and can gossip about.

Those who don't or can't contribute to the tax receipts of the country mean that figure is way higher for those that do surely?.

It's not good value either way IMO. Why pay for someone's lifestyle just because they were born?

I'm not sure, but do they pay for upkeep and maintenance of all their properties themselves, or does the per adult contribution just pay for the trappings of gold coaches, security and foreign "soft diplomatic" jollies here there and everywhere, and so on?

So much money. Just so much money that few of us ever see the benefit of.

I could give you a list of a thousand things I would spend £1.29 per person per year on before these pampered princes.

You may choose to gift them £1.29 a year with a smile and a wave whilst there are children starving and people dying in the streets of a broken health and care system. I have higher standards and ideals.

Christmaseason · 14/12/2024 15:30

They are worth £1.29 per year to me (more actually), they give me a lot of pleasure. I love the royal family, I wonder how much money they bring to the Uk
through tourism.

Well I have to give the BBC £169 of my money every year which I really don’t want to, so £1.29 doesn’t seem too bad when I can look at the clothes and be thankful I don’t have to live in their gilded cage with everyone tearing my every move apart.
Good job we are all different, it makes the world a more interesting place.

No you don't.

You choose to. Big difference
Same way the royals choose to pay tax.

Just looking at that picture, attached to the article, of Charles with his crown on, and just thinking about these Crown Jewels he is wearing on his head, said to be worth to the value of between £3-5 billion. Can you imagine how utterly life changing that kind of money would be for so many worse of people in this community - that would go towards trying to help and remedy poverty and homeless, for example, in this country? But no, the king needs those jewels on his head, for important family functions, that we all have to pay for, even those facing poverty. Its all so upside down.

That's a myth.
Oh and, by the way, the £1.29 does not take into account the security costs which are hidden from us for ummm security reasons. Thought to run into millions and millions a year

emmetgirl · 14/12/2024 15:55

Absolutely not.
Get rid.

Be careful. You might start asking if they are all paid for ....

Get rid of the lot of them. They prop up an outdated class system.
It’s sheer luck who turns out to the firstborn. Imagine if Harry was King. Shudder.

If for no other reason than the fact of having a monarch means none of use here - no one - can encourage any of our children to aspire to be monarch.

If you are a royalist and happy to write your own kids off as being second best (by definition, by the way) then knock yourselves out. Tell your kids that.

But some of us genuinely believe we are all created equal.

One thing you cannot fault in a presidential system is that - despite the iniquities of all societies - at least you can honestly say anyone could become president.

@Fairyliz "Well I’ve just had a google which says the royal family costs each person in Uk £1.29 per year."

That's just the sovereign grant-which is going up by (I think) 43% next year. It does not include security. I think in total they cost around half a billion a year...

Who wrote that, the Royal Accountant? Open the books and let's see the real costs? Income from all sources and outgoings. Who pays for what eg security, flights etc. Do we still have a Royal Train? We had the Royal Yacht that was paid for by the Navy until they couldn't afford to. Odd how the RF have not had a yacht since. Not hired one nor had a rich mate eg mid East, Russian,American loan them one or give them mates rates for the hire.
Just checked, there is indeed a Royal Train that someone else (DB Cargo) own, operate and maintain. How useful. Your own train that someone is happy to store and maintain. A German company apparently that has been making a loss but maintains a train that doesn't go anywhere. Not a business model that usually works

Spuck · 14/12/2024 16:48

Not so much now that our beloved Queen Elizabeth has passed.

Even then, I think I felt pro-royals simply out of respect for the Queen and all that she had given to her role.

Now though, I think the Royal part of the royal family could quite easily cease to exist and it just be apart of history.

It’s a shame, but times change, traditions change and in modern times it doesn’t quite feel right or even real. And to be honest, perhaps the family themselves would appreciate some normality. Despite the financial comfort of it and the homes, I personally wouldn’t fancy it at all.

SerendipityJane · 14/12/2024 16:49

That would mean we'd need to know all the land they own. Which we don't (in fact I wonder if they do).

DilemmaDelilah · 14/12/2024 16:56

Yes I am - the working ones anyway. I think they have a really strong sense of duty and the ones that work actually work very hard.

I'm not keen on the ones who sit back and expect things just because they were born with a title.

Someone does. Charles is the biggest private landowner in Britain. I want to know where the Crown Estate and private land are defined. But somewhere there is a list of assets that has been maintained for years. Land, buildings, jewellery, art, stamps, race horses. I suspect the list is moved around to take advantage of any advantageous financial vehicles. HMRC His Majesties Revenue and Customs. Doubt they are going knocking on the door. Perhaps a polite meeting in a gilt room with scones and footmen and the King reminding them whose title is in the title and about that knighthood........

Not necessarily. Private Eye have long reported on how opaque English (if not UK) property ownership can be. Why do you think this country is a preferred destination for hiding ill gotten gains ? It's hardly the weather.

If you want to talk big landowners, then the CoE (CEO: Charles Windsor) is no slouch either. Makes it look like the Duke of Westminster is playing monopoly.

Me and my family will do it for half price. When can I expect your 65 p?

AuxArmesCitoyens · 14/12/2024 17:45

The monarch has no role in altering legislation.

No-one has said they do. The monarch clearly has a role in suggesting what legislation should look like before it comes into being, though. How do you think they got the employment and inheritance law carve-outs?

Charles is equally as bad as Harry, they all are. He doesn’t need singling out as a terrible person to be King.
