NYE in Edinburgh

Help me plan NYE in Edinburgh for my visitors from the US, please!

Where wound you stay? What would you do? Recommendations welcome.

Really? I everything booked up? I thought there were tons of hotels in Edinburgh.

There are tons of hotels but it’s the busiest night of the year.

You’ll likely still find something (depending how many of you there are), but it’ll be expensive.

My elder DDs are doing the Edinburgh Hogmanay this year and they booked their hotel in January and their dinner booking in March (and couldn’t get their first choice for that!).

There are tons of hotels. I just did a search on booking.com 4 nights over new year £777 at a basic hotel on a good bus route into town. Most packages are over £1000 for 4 nights.

What sort of thing do you want?
Posh meal dinner dance type thing or standing in the freezing cold with lots of drunk people at the street party??
I'd stay at home! 😂

If they're travelling from further afield which I assume they are then also factor in that there's very little public transport on NYD and most tourist attractions will be closed. Those that do open don't tend to open until noon. It can be a nice time to walk around the city while it's quieter but there isn't a lot else to do.

Have you bought tickets for the street party yet? Pick somewhere to stay based on the entrance you have tickets for.

FWIW as a Scot I can't imagine anything worse than the tourist hotspot of Edinburgh at Hogmanay. It's in no way reflective of a traditional Scottish Hogmanay which is about spending time with your family, friends and neighbours.

Ok, I've bought tickets for the street party.

It's been years since I've done anything and these are special friends/relatives do happy to push the boat out. I've seen places for around £350 mark. It's just one night as we will be coming in from St Andrews and then heading down to family in the Lakes later next day.

I don't need 4 nights. Just 1 will do!

I don't have any expectations. Happy to mill in. Have just bought street party tickets. Looking for somewhere near our entrance gate if poss. Not bothered about where we eat or drink, happy to be flexible.

How many people? You will be exceptionally lucky to find something in the city centre for the price on Hogmanay.

Are you driving because if so, you'll need a hotel with parking and they're rarer than hen's teeth!
Premier Inn Lauriston Place is £339 that night and you could walk to/from the street party.

Leonardo Hotel Murrayfield looks like a decent bet. It's not any way at Murrayfield though so probably an hour's walk home from Princes Street. But there is plenty of parking.

We did this last year to see Pulp on hogmanay. We stayed at the premier inn at Edinburgh Park and got the tram. The tram runs all night for free. There's still rooms available in the city though within walking distance. We had just left it really late to book. In all honesty although I'm glad we did it, I'd never do it again. Looking forward to my quiet night in front of the fire this year 😂

You are crazy! Stay at home and watch the BBC Alba ceilidh and have some whisky at the bells. Americans will love that! No need to hang around on crowded streets for hours in the freezing cold. Thank me later.

That's a good shout. That one is still under £200 for Hogmanay and easy to park and get away the next day.

Note that this is nowhere near Murrayfield stadium or even area! It's up the back of Corstorphine Hill in Clermiston. It's served by the 26 bus if it's running on NYE.
Travelodge at Cameron Toll is £250 and has parking. It's a good walk or a bus ride into the city centre though.
Edinburgh Park Premier Inn is only £181 and has parking and it's right by the train/tram line if you check their timetables for NYE.

I do that every year and it's borrrrrrrring. For once I fancy something rowdy.

It's well over 6km from the west end of Princes Street to the Leonardo "Murrayfield", that's way more than an hours walk.
