The 90s docusoaps craze.

Inspired by a thread about old telly shows got me thinking about the 90s docusoaps and my god there were so many of them.

The Cruise (which gave us the fab Jane McDonald)
Holiday Reps
Airport
Hotel
Lakesiders.
Vets in practice.
Driving school.

It all seems so random now, I know the shows documenting the emergency services shows are still popular these days but I cannot imagine now sitting down watching someone's day working in a department store or taking their driving lesson. But me and 10 million other people used to do just that. Different times!

There were two that definitely didn't take off
One was following Wigan council workers going about their daily business.. would Mabel get her repair done on time.
The other was about people moving house and removal people shifting stuff.

A Life of Grime, with the legendary Mr Trebus.

Although a bit set up, I loved The Salon.

There was a brilliant one about a conservatory company, it was really like an episode of The Office.

Loved airport. So much drama. So entertaining

NeverSeenAFarmerOnABike · 11/12/2024 18:16

They were a bit weird I guess but with hindsight they were preferable to the endless docusoaps we get about medical procedures and murders now.

garlictwist · 11/12/2024 18:18

I used to watch one when I got in from school called The Vilage which was literally just a fly on the wall thing about a quite dull village and the people that lived there. I used to quite enjoy it. Weird teenage viewing but hey.

MichaelAndEagle · 11/12/2024 18:18

I guess this was the beginning of reality tv really.
Also I remember when the office first aired it really wasn't obvious at first that it wasn't actually a docusoap itself.

The Armstrongs. It's on YouTube and it's still amazing.

I remember that! Then they tried to talk in French but translated conservatory into conservatoire, which actually means music school.

Quidland · 11/12/2024 18:29

I loved airport, airline and the other one I forget the name of.

Also loved one about a Welsh callcentre, I forget the name of it but the boss was called nev.

Comedycook · 11/12/2024 18:30

I used to love wife swap, fat families, how clean is your house and you are what you eat...TV was the best in the 90s.

NeverSeenAFarmerOnABike · 11/12/2024 18:32

Is You Are What You Eat the one with that woman who was obsessed with poo?

HaddyAbrams · 11/12/2024 18:33

Wife swap. Holiday Showdown. House Doctor. Supernanny.

getthosetitsup · 11/12/2024 18:33

Ah Driving School and Maureen who must have been the shitest learner driver ever 😂

Yes! And they used to lay out all the crap food they'd eaten over a week on a table!

n3f5 · 11/12/2024 18:35

I don't think these are 90s, more like 2010s

CrushingOnRubies · 11/12/2024 18:36

The call centre

Sold double glazing in wales. With a david Brent character and a girl who was really bubbly but couldn't sell so was moved on to be the tea lady.

Which ones? Fairly sure all those mentioned in the OP were 90s - some might have crept into the 00s but they started in the 90s.

Ginkypig · 11/12/2024 18:44

I would much much rather watch (some) of these than the endless relentless stream of really shows like
housewives
love island,
married at first sight,
made in Chelsea
strictly
d on ice
that thing where they all sing in costumes
bgt

and on and on and on!
Myriads of people whose aim is to appear in one reality show any reality show regardless of the content to become a celebrity.

I know others like them but I think they are all shit and it’s all they seem to make now.

Doctor Gillian McKeith who later had to admit that she wasn't really a doctor at all except in her own head but it still didn't stop her talking absolute bollocks.

Aww yeah Mr Trebus. There was so many great programmes on in the 90s. Telly is crap these days.
