The 90s docusoaps craze.

Inspired by a thread about old telly shows got me thinking about the 90s docusoaps and my god there were so many of them.

The Cruise (which gave us the fab Jane McDonald)
Holiday Reps
Airport
Hotel
Lakesiders.
Vets in practice.
Driving school.

It all seems so random now, I know the shows documenting the emergency services shows are still popular these days but I cannot imagine now sitting down watching someone's day working in a department store or taking their driving lesson. But me and 10 million other people used to do just that. Different times!

Loved The Salon and the double glazing people I remember howling at them so funny.
I loved Undercover Boss. Sometimes they'd give an employee a bonus after they'd gone above & beyond.
Good telly!

It was really compared to the others which felt more frothy and lighter in tone.
Jackie was the one I really remember but there is nothing about her online. I hope she's doing well now.

I wish c4 would put ‘the family at Christmas’ back on 4 on demand for this year. Or even just every episode of The family ever. I know there are edited versions but the originals would be better.

Wish Life of Grime was available to watch somewhere!
loved Mr Trebus. And some of it was incredibly sad (Mr Trebus’s story was actually v poignant)

It is!

I Just looked up the premise of Paddington Green because I remember it vividly whilst also remembering nothing about it. Harry and his face cream sounds slightly sinister 😬 and Jason, Danny, Helen and Neil must have been rivetting watching 🤔.

Harry has a wig-maker shop, and is also seen working on a revolutionary face cream in the basement of his shop.

Jackie is a transsexual woman in her late twenties, seen working the streets of Sussex Gardens as a prostitute.During the series she undertakes some surgery, and we also get a glimpse of her love of the piano (she later goes on to record her own CD). Jackie is also featured in a June 2000 one-off special called "Jackie's Story".

Claudia works for her father's scooter business, and is trying to embark on a singing career.

Jason works as a locksmith, and is seemingly on call all day and night.

Danny is a bus conductor for London Transport.

Dave is a wheeler dealer. We see him in constant financial problems with his car park business. Later, he takes his hand at antique dealing.

Dominique and Lia
Dominique and Lia are seeking fame and fortune at the Sylvia Young Theatre School.

Neil works as an estate agent.

Kelly is a teenage model, originally from Yorkshire. She is now established as an actress known for appearing in Casualty.

Helen is a taxi driver.

Edited

I used to watch it with my dad but cannot remember the characters that well. Thank you

Loved undercover boss!

I loved the first series but after that you could sense the employee's had got wise to it and their shocked reactions at the revealed felt a bit false.

Has anyone mentioned the Australian fruit confiscation show? Or is that later? God I love it.

Nothing to declare? Although your title is way better 🤭. Much later I think.

Does anyone remember home from home ? Think it was channel 4 🤔 families swapped houses in different countries for holidays. It was a bit like rich house poor house. Very early 2000's I think.

Thevelvelletes · 11/12/2024 23:09

Or the one where wayward teens were packed off abroad to really strict parents.

AgathaMystery · 11/12/2024 23:10

Paddington Green was really sad and interesting.

Does anyone remember the Australian one - Sylvania Waters? It was fantastic. Possibly the first fly on the wall family type show.

There was a brilliant one about a conservatory company, it was really like an episode of The Office.

The Armstrongs - U Fit, I cried laughing at the Selling to the French episode - 60 sausages on a truck, selling music schools in France, v heavily pg and was hysterical, worrying family!

That's a relief. I thought I must be really old suddenly.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/12/2024 23:15

@Thevelvelletes Brat Camp. I thought it was just for telly but apparently they are all real camps that actually operate in America 😮.

Wife swap. Holiday Showdown. House Doctor. Supernanny.

House Doctor was excellent. I loved that. Practically no one had the internet then, and even if they did you couldn't see what you can now. House Doctor was really informative, practical, and just a hint of a power-crazed b*tch on a mission. If it was staged then it was very realistic still...unlike programs today.

The one am thinking of put teens to strict parents in various countries around the world.

I don't think these are 90s, more like 2010s

They're not all from 2010... Airport was 1996, which really sort of kicked it all off...the first to really feature "contestants" was probably "Changing Rooms", also from 1996.

Firestorms · 11/12/2024 23:17

Mr Trebus was so interesting.

😂😂. I think the docusoap was a uniquely 90s element so we're possibly showing our age a bit!
