Cam you do a handstand?

Ds is trying, he's 7. I'd love to demonstrate but probably haven't done one for over 30 years I'm 47 and too fat.

Can you do one? Would you try?

SirChenjins · 08/12/2024 19:34

No - and at 55 I wouldn’t even try, I’d do myself harm!

ManhattanPopcorn · 08/12/2024 19:38

Yes. Do it about a foot from a wall so you can rest your feet against the wall if you think you might fall. It's great for toning the post menopausal arms.

wendywoopywoo222 · 08/12/2024 19:38

Gosh no. Couldn't do one when I was a child either.

user1498193554 · 08/12/2024 19:39

Yes. But I do CrossFit and we do handstand stuff there. I’m 50 :)

IoWfairy · 08/12/2024 19:39

Never managed, can't do a cartwheel either - Life has otherwise been a success.
Hope your son is able to not worry about it either.

Chasingaces · 08/12/2024 19:40

Yes and I'm over 60 and can still do cartwheels.

Tiggiwinklescousin · 08/12/2024 19:41

Most days I can barely do an adequate foot stand!

Jostuki · 08/12/2024 19:45

Well over 50 and I can do a handstand, cartwheel and the splits!

Marblesbackagain · 08/12/2024 19:50

49, yep and the splits and cartwheel. It is really important to stay flexible.

Great for toning and balance. I was reading that it's core strength that makes a difference in health so trying to keep some level of it.

Comedycook · 08/12/2024 19:51

Couldn't do this as a child, let alone now.

Stretchedresources · 08/12/2024 19:52

Yes. I'm 50.

Allnewtometoo · 08/12/2024 19:56

@SirChenjins thats how I feel, although I have recently taken up roller skating....

@IoWfairy oh he's not worried, he's throwing himself around with gleeful abandon. And improving all the time.

I'm very impressed with you all! I was never very flexible as a child, could do a decent handstand, rubbish at cartwheels (landed on 2 feet). Never could do splits.

I can't (but DH can 😂)

aintnospringchicken · 08/12/2024 19:57

I could do handstands a few years ago but wouldn't try now as the risk of breaking a bone if I toppled over is too great.(I'm in my 60s)

Gymmum82 · 08/12/2024 19:58

No. I can cartwheel and I’m very fit but I can’t handstand. Maybe if I practiced. I’m envious of people who can

Mumofteenandtween · 08/12/2024 19:58

Yes. And cartwheels. And even a one handed cartwheel. My splits are rubbish now though.

(Used to be a competitive gymnast.)

Allmarbleslost · 08/12/2024 20:01

I imagine my wrists would snap with the weight I am these days!

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 08/12/2024 20:02

Yes and I can do a headstand too. I'm in my early 40s.

anxiousmessallday · 08/12/2024 20:03

Ahhh remembering the days of handstands and trying to walk on your hands !
My mom could walk down the wall when she was pissed 😆

SwordToFlamethrower · 08/12/2024 20:03

47 and yes

Marblesbackagain · 08/12/2024 20:12

I would recommend yoga and work your way up. I became a bit inflexible in my early 30s after I had my children then got back into yoga and some very light conditioning.By degrees I got back to doing some very light and rather inelegant gymnastics.

To be brutally honest it was after a nasty back injury. I wouldn't be the most fit but I was advised by a spinal surgeon that staying flexible would keep him away from me 🤣.

Fair play on the roller skating,I do it a bit every now and again and then remember I am crap at stopping.

Iwishiwasagiraffe · 08/12/2024 20:16

I can go up into one but come straight back down because I can’t hold it. I can go into a handstand with a wall behind me to balance. I can do a headstand and a cartwheel. Not sure if I could manage a one handed cartwheel anymore- I could last year but it wasn’t easy!!! I’ve always wanted to be able to hold a handstand and also do a back walkover but never managed either (and never will)

Brombat · 08/12/2024 20:19

I got to the point where I could do one-handed handstands wall-supported not freestanding. (age 47).

I've got a BMI of 35 & am quite a bit older now. Will have to have a go.

Was never able to spring up into one tho, legs too short & heavy!

Thevelvelletes · 08/12/2024 20:42

Comedycook · 08/12/2024 19:51

Couldn't do this as a child, let alone now.

Snap and if tried now well that would be guaranteed trip to AE like the NHS haven't enough to be doing.

minipie · 08/12/2024 20:48

God no. I am really impressed so many posters can. A proper handstand, where you hold it at the top rather than straight back down, is really hard and requires excellent upper body muscle and abs.

I can do a cartwheel, they are much easier IMO and more about technique and bravery than strength.
