How the hell do I get DS's work boots try for tomorrow

TitaniasAss · 08/12/2024 16:43

He's been working overtime today in the pissing rain all day. His work boots are soaked and he needs them for tomorrow. I don't have any newspaper and don't have a hairdryer. Apart from putting them on a radiator what can I do to get them dryer?

Get two plastic bags ready for the morning to line them with because if they’re soaking I don’t think they’ll dry in time. And chuck a spare pair of socks in his bag too.

You’re a nice mum.

Not helpful for now but I definitely recommend the boot bananas as linked above for future

TheChippendenSpook · 08/12/2024 21:25

Heaven forbid you do anything nice for your son Hmm

This place!

Extraticket · 08/12/2024 21:31

Put on the thickest socks that you have and stand in his boots (with insoles removed). It will remove some of the extra water before drying on radiator. If the socks come out really soggy, repeat with more thick dry socks until most of the water is mopped up.

Uytfy · 08/12/2024 21:35

What corner shops are open at 8.30pm on a Sunday 🤣

My son is 20 and I still do his washing! Shock horror!

I think there’s a typo in your OP - surely
you meant to ask how DS gets his work boots dry for tomorrow? 😉

Exactly

Bjorkdidit · 08/12/2024 21:36

Not helpful for tomorrow, but the electric boot dryer and/or a second pair of boots if he wears them a lot is a lifesaver.

We got a cheap boot dryer from Amazon and it's excellent.

For tonight/tomorrow he'll be best trying screwed up newspaper, put them on the radiator and keep changing the newspaper when it gets wet. Then blast with a hair dryer in the morning.

RubyRedBow · 08/12/2024 21:37

Ideally he needs a spare pair ordering asap. I hope some of the tips you have work.

My local corner shops are open until 10pm.

madaboutpurple · 08/12/2024 21:39

In case this happens again why does he not buy another pair of boots and can swap them for the dry pair?

Jostuki · 08/12/2024 21:40

You can order waterproofing spray for future use.

Rather than dry on radiator I would plane on a chair in from of the overnight with the door open and let the heat from the oven dry them.

Yep, some serious double standards on here

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 08/12/2024 21:59

Why is it so wrong to do something nice for someone? I got absolutely soaked walking back from the station recently came in took my coat and boots off went upstairs to change my clothes and towel dry my hair. Came down and DH and put my boots in front of the log burner, hung my coat in the airing cupboard and made me a cup of tea. He's had a long day of work in awful weather, working hard and not being paid much but trying to get himself a career. I'm pretty sure he wants dinner and a hot shower/bath, what's wrong with his mum looking for ideas how to dry his boots for work again tomorrow? Maybe he'll grow up to also be considerate.

scratchyfannyofcocklane · 08/12/2024 22:00

Do you have a fan? I actually tied DS's schools shoes to the front and placed the entire thing in front of a radiator. The combination of air and heat completely dried them out overnight and they were literally sopping wet.

Ineffable23 · 08/12/2024 22:04

I'd start by stuffing with tea towels, change after 15 mins and repeat. Then create a tent over the radiator and put them on there in the little tent.

Branster · 08/12/2024 22:07

Lots of newspapers, scrunched up and pushed inside the boots. Remove when it gets damp and replace with with dry newspaper.
Ask neighbours if they have spare newspapers.

Northernladdette · 08/12/2024 22:09

@TitaniasAss
100% a typo, you mean dry not try 😂

IdylicDay · 08/12/2024 22:11

TitaniasAss · 08/12/2024 20:29

No typo. He was at work in the pissing rain from 4am this morning then sat in a traffic jam for two hours on his way home. He's an apprentice and works bloody hard. I even made his dinner for him too ...

You have the word 'try' in the OP instead of dry.

But its not a big deal.

I have no solutions unfortunately, you've had some good ones though.

Moonchildalltheway · 08/12/2024 22:41

OP was just asking for helpful suggestions to help her son, no need for the sarky replies about he should be doing it himself.

madaboutpurple · 08/12/2024 21:39

He needs to order another pair, his work issued him with one pair and they've been waterproofed but the weather today just got the better of them I guess. His whole work gear has spent the last 6 hours in the tumble drier. 😂

I'm not ashamed to admit I help him out with stuff like this. He's my son and he works hard. He also helps around the house, will pick us up when we're out and is generally a lovely, helpful young man. I don't really understand when people come on here and act like you're some kind of maniac for helping your (just) adult children out. Fine to help a complete stranger out, but god forbid you actually act with kindness towards your own family.
