Saw evidence of drug taking

I've name changed for this, but I'm a regular poster and have been on here for years.

Last night at a Christmas do I saw evidence of drug taking, or rather supply by one person to a couple of people who each then promptly went to the loo. I'm not naive about the reach of drugs in society, but I was shocked to see this in this setting with these people. These are people with young families who I've known for a few years. I'm now wondering what the hell to do. One of those involved is probably a dealer who ostensibly has a professional job.

But guys, alcohol is legal. Cocaine is not. Whether you or I or anybody may think the law should be different, this is the law. If you drink too much, you definitely risk harming your own health, in extreme cases maybe harming your family, losing your job. If you take cocaine, disadvantaged children are going missing and getting stabbed in the street so you can have a bit of a giggle. Is it worth it to you? It isn’t to me.

KimFan · 08/12/2024 18:58

It’s nothing to do with you, therefore you don’t need to do anything.

I never understand the “let’s legalise drugs” argument, as a way of reducing crime. Yes, of course it would reduce crime. Why not make murder legal too, that would reduce the crime figures. And let’s make it legal to break into someone’s house and take their stuff. The convictions for burglary would plummet it is was legalised!

Also, saying alcohol is worse - well so what? We already have alcohol, that particular Pandora’s box is already open. But do we really want to have more legal drugs around that people that take when they’re driving, flying a plane, teaching kids, performing heart surgery? Since cannabis was decriminalised the smell of weed is almost constant it town centres, and it goes without saying that there are more people wandering around not thinking clearly than there used to be. How will our lives be improved by everyone walking around high on coke?!

We already have alcohol, that particular Pandora’s box is already open. We also already have illegal drugs.
Nobody is talking about legalising drug driving/flying/teaching/operating.
Legalising drugs will not make everyone take them. Did you start smoking weed in 2004 and now wonder around high all the time? Is that how you missed it being re-criminalised in 2009?

It is something to do with me. I'm not going to continue to give my hard earned money to people supporting an illegal trade and all that goes with it. They're a bunch of hypocrites and I have lost respect for them.

Then don’t be around them. Easy.

Sheknowsyouknowaye · 08/12/2024 19:49

It's not easy though when you've been around people, spent time with them and thought they weren't like that. I was shocked last night. I'm still shocked today, but I have a conscience and principles.

Would it affect their job? Do you think they’re dealing with colleagues or worse like
kids? A lot is context when you look at how to deal with it.

It’s ok I understand, I’d be shocked too if I found out about certain people doing it.

I do find MN a bit upside down at times.

Here we all seem to be advocating turning a blind eye to drug taking yet if the OP had accidently not paid for something at the supermarket or had something delivered twice and not returned one of the items, she'd have been shot down.

I find the moral stance on MN bizarre sometimes

FWIW I wouldn't be reporting the incident the OP mentions and nor would I be going out of my way to return something Amazon delivered to be in error. I'm morally defunct 😂

Edited

I'm also morally defunct because I'd ignore the social drug use and not return the accidental amazon double delivery and I sometimes eat beige air fryer food. And my kid wouldn't thank you for money to go to a book shop. MN is weird.

I think you are being naive. Just because the person gave them it, doesnt mean they're a dealer. They likely all pitched in for it, which is often what happens. I wouldn't get involved, at all unless you're their manager/supervisor.

Edited

That's how it works, one person will pick it up ,the others will chip in what they owe, then bag is split between them.

I understand as well.

I'm not cool. None of my close friends do coke (I know they don't, we have discussed it). Most of them are retired and prefer to indulge in legal drugs (alcohol).

I am always amazed at the circles that many mumsnetters move in that they have so many friends who do so. I just move in different circles.

Bouledeneige · 08/12/2024 22:32

I would be very surprised to see colleagues doing drugs as they are not those kinds of people. But I've seen it occasionally at parties of my wider - not closer - social circle. I can't say it especially worried me although I've never taken any myself.
It didn't really affect me morally (and yes I've seen an overdose up close when I was younger).

I'd leave it aside and ignore. And just because someone shared stuff doesn't mean they are a dealer.

Copperoliverbear · 09/12/2024 00:54

Disassociate yourself from these people.

they’re a “bunch of hypocrites”
why? have they been very vocal about being against drugs?

How are the hypocrits?

willowstar · 11/12/2024 07:06

I have been in a similar position and stopped socialising with the people when I realised what was going on. I have absolutely no desire to spend time with grown adults who take drugs knowing the ripples effects that the drug trade has. Also they are just boring /exhausting to be around when they are tanked up.
