Saw evidence of drug taking

I've name changed for this, but I'm a regular poster and have been on here for years.

Last night at a Christmas do I saw evidence of drug taking, or rather supply by one person to a couple of people who each then promptly went to the loo. I'm not naive about the reach of drugs in society, but I was shocked to see this in this setting with these people. These are people with young families who I've known for a few years. I'm now wondering what the hell to do. One of those involved is probably a dealer who ostensibly has a professional job.

So a few people you know from your hobby took some coke at the Christmas party and you deduce from this that one of them is a dealer and your hobby money is being spent on drugs?

It's a bit of a leap?

SplittingAtoms · 08/12/2024 10:40

To be honest, you probably know a lot of people who aren't squeaky clean, or are end customers of a trade that damages others.

Maybe they buy fast fashion that was ultimately made by kids in sweatshops or other massively exploited groups.

Maybe they drive a polluting vehicle, take lots of flights and trash the environment.

Maybe they have investments or a pension fund and don't really know exactly which shares it's invested in - believe me, a lot of people are profiting from stuff they really wouldn't want to think about.

I guess it's up to you to decide where you draw the line.

FrostyTheSnowHuman · 08/12/2024 10:42

I would personally consider grassing up people you’re nominally friends with to the police for doing a line of coke at a christmas party…

…to be morally far worse than doing a line of coke at a christmas party

Indeed. I strongly suspect OP may not only know, but actually be, such a person.

Most of us are.

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 10:44

Unfortunately it’s complete normal & loads turn a blind eye to it. The same people who flinch when gang crime increases in their area 🤷🏻‍♀️

WingBingo · 08/12/2024 10:45

I’m sure there are lots of people who don’t take coke at the Christmas party.

but there are lots of people that do. Ignore and withdraw if you don’t like it.

Is this now on par with drugs?

ThisOldThang · 08/12/2024 09:47

Every single item in your list is due to drugs being illegal. If they were legally available from the pharmacy, then none of those problems would exist.

Are you suggesting cocaine is legalised?

Edited

I know I am.

Pickled21 · 08/12/2024 10:51

I have a very strong stance on drug use but I come into contact with drug users for work and see the utter misery it causes. Some people are very happy to compartmentalise a 'bit of coke use' but I am not. It can and does feed into wider problems in society. I'd leave the hobby or if you want to continue avoid any type of social events. I'd not choose to be around someone who deals drugs though. Would I report, probably not because it's grown adults choosing to use but if asked why you have left I would be honest and say so.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/12/2024 10:54

JurassicPark4Eva · 08/12/2024 09:36

It impacts the whole world. Drug use is the driving force behind drug dealers, county lines, human trafficking, modern slavery, cuckooing, organised crime groups, money laundering and all the associated violence, rape, sexual assaults, murders interlinked with these OCGs.

This

MrDarlingtonsPie · 08/12/2024 10:57

It’s never wasting police time, it could contribute to intelligence. Police are always interested in knowing about drugs, who is buying and especially where they are getting it from. Any phone numbers or vehicles you might know of especially, it all helps to build a picture. Children get murdered over this stuff, it’s far from harmless.

Dontwearmysocks · 08/12/2024 11:00

Sheknowsyouknowaye · 08/12/2024 10:18

@Alwaysoneoddsock you've articulated a lot of what I'm thinking and feeling very well. A pp was correct that I know these people through a hobby. I'm concerned that some of the money I am paying for this is being spent on drugs and I cannot condone this. I am really sad that this means for me I have to leave this hobby group.

If you feel that strongly about it don’t spend time with them. What would be your desired outcome if reporting them?

Ladyj84 · 08/12/2024 11:01

Sadly people seem to think any drug taking is acceptable. Of you don't then distance yourself from the people involved once you become aware...Funny enough hubby became aware of a work group of lads sharing on Saturdays out last year and he promptly stopped going out with them...luckily he found the slightly older group are fine so goes with them now

DoggoQuestions · 08/12/2024 11:01

Thatcastlethere · 08/12/2024 10:36

Is it a serious crime?
She doesn't know what they were taking...
And you think doing a bit of drugs at a Christmas do is up there with murder do you?
Obviously the context is important.
Reporting this to the police will achieve nothing but wasting their time.
If you witnessed a murder reporting it to the police would achieve quite a lot and not be a waste of everyone's time!

Seeing as there were most likely a few murders in order for the coke to end up at a Christmas party...yes.

How is reporting a crime wasting police time? That is literally why the police forces exist!

Pinkissmart · 08/12/2024 10:46

Are you suggesting cocaine is legalised?

That's a good idea. The only reason it is all in the hands of criminals is because governments have arbitrarily decided that some drugs are ok and some are not. If we legalise all drugs and we can make it safer, collect tax and stamp out the criminal element.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 08/12/2024 11:12

@Sheknowsyouknowaye I would change my friend circle if I was you!

MumblesParty · 08/12/2024 11:25

MN is bizarrely tolerant of drug use, which I find very sad, given that a lot of posters are parents of young children. If I thought someone I knew was a dealer I’d report them. And the people who were just users I would have a very low opinion of, and would not want to spend time with them. I find it rather pathetic when adults fill their bodies with god knows what, knowing they’re breaking the law and harming themselves, all for a momentary buzz.

Cocaine will dissolve your nasal septum whether it’s illegal or not.

Are you suggesting cocaine is legalised?

Why not?

Sell it at the pharmacy with mandatory photo ID requirements.

Cocaine will dissolve your nasal septum whether it’s illegal or not.

Who cares?

The current system results in 3rd world violence, corruption, cartels, child exploitation, gun crime, property crime, overcrowded prisons and ruined septums.

MammaTo · 08/12/2024 12:01

There’s not a lot you can do. You don’t have evidence? Are you going to go the police with a vague story of people potentially taking drugs on a Christmas night out. The only thing you can do is to find a new hobby group or don’t mix socially with these people.

Snugglemonkey · 08/12/2024 12:01

I would too.

zingally · 08/12/2024 12:01

You do nothing.

But I'd personally minimize my social contact with these people.

I think that is what needs to happen.
