What a storm over the last 24 hours! Anyone had much major damage to their property?

just the fence in back garden is damaged but I feel like we’ve had a bit of a lucky escape compared to others nearby - we live near the sea! Other houses / businesses have had roof damage, windows blow out and debris damage! Power cables came down in one street!

Oh - and we’ve had a number of power cuts throughout the day - went off for about 3 hours at one stage and has gone off at least twice in the last hour!

Big tree down in garden, hot tub cover blown off, tree plant pot blown over and cracked plastic recycling box half way across the garden…

Fancytrike · 07/12/2024 23:02

Power cuts, longest 5hrs just as it got dark, trees down. Not on west coast and feeling for those more affected. Also nothing new - power goes off here every time wind blows…

gamerchick · 07/12/2024 23:03

Haven't checked. It's still blowing a hooley.

I did chuckle at watching this. That's properly windy. I came back from.work before the wind picked up but some people couldn't probably.

The cover on the bbq blew off.

Currently on a train in an only amber coloured warning area. I'm about 4 mins from the station and in the right town but we've had to stop as a conifer is down on the line.

We should have pulled into the station an hour and half ago.

Norman the gnome is on his back. 😥

Allmarbleslost · 07/12/2024 23:06

There's a lot of crashing and banging outside but I've decided to have a wine or three and make it tomorrows problem.

I was very gung ho about the wind (we're in Cornwall, there's mass hysteria if we get 2 flakes of snow but 70mph winds are just a normal day really), so off we went to get our Christmas tree as planned.

However, finding the main road closed in 2 places (1 was for power lines down, I think the other was for a small tree down) and, on our detour, seeing a house with a massive tree fallen on it did prove quite sobering.

Polgara2 · 07/12/2024 23:19

Fence blown down. But somewhere had roof blown off not far away and lots of trees down and power cuts. Amber alert area

EmeraldDreams73 · 07/12/2024 23:22

We have some very wobbly fence panels and are currently about 10 hours into what looks likely to be up to a 30 hour power cut. Absolute bloody pain but we're lucky not to have serious damage and to be able to stay in. Cheese sandwiches for dinner, a candlelit evening having to talk to each other, and an early night in the freezing cold have not gone down well here. I can cope with the lack of wifi as have plenty of data I never use, but I'd have loved to be able to read a book.

Currently ordering various battery operated lights and headlamps to be more prepared next time...

That poor family, right before Christmas. And Cornwall not known for plethora of rental options.

It was quite a large period property, so hopefully they'll have generous insurance that will pay for a hotel.

The neighbour's polar bear has fallen over.... Twice!!!

Daisymae55 · 07/12/2024 23:43

We had next doors gazebo fly into our garden and nearly smash one of our windows - that was fun to wake up to!

I work for a power company. At 6 yesterday morning we had a100,000 customers without power, by 11pm we had 30,000 off. This morning I’m getting on a helicopter and flying key power lines to inspect for damage.

I love my job. I know people complain about us but the sheer effort that goes into getting the power back on in these events is a site to behold. Yesterday we struggled to do anything. The wind was too high to safely climb the power lines and getting to the affected areas was impossible. Trees down across roads and floods everywhere.

I”ve probably got another 3 days of very early starts and very late finishes. I know I’m going to get shed loads of overtime but I’d probably do it for free if I had to.

lorn195 · 08/12/2024 06:07

I'm in Cornwall too and the wind over the past 24 hours has been constant!

The storm has finally finished part of our fence off which was damaged in the last one a couple of weeks ago. DS17 and I were out at 11:00 pm last night carrying planks of wood and panels into the garden to stop them flying into cars and the road.

The substation (behind us) fence had also gone, thankfully it's on the roof.

That's awesome. Not sure I would want to be in a helicopter today even if things are quietening down!

showersandflowers · 08/12/2024 06:17

The kids' play house has been on a grand tour of the garden.

Sheknowsaboutme · 08/12/2024 06:39

Rural snowdonia here. Fencing blown, must fix that today as we need to move the sheep back to the field.

pot plants blown over, recycling boxes everywhere, can’t believe that was it considering we were in a red area and its still terribly stormy, but dry!

but hey ho, many people got a lot worse so we’re thankful.

and my overnight briquettes did their job and I have a roaring fire going at 6:40am!

Can’t say I’m not a bit apprehensive but I’ve done it before and it’s been okay except the last time when the pilot was a nervous Nelly and whoah every time it got a bit bumpy.

Jifmicroliquid · 08/12/2024 07:10

Lost a big sheeting part off one of our barns. Fortunately just a machinery shed, not housing animals.

CeeJay81 · 08/12/2024 07:34

Just a bit of damage to our shed roof, so we are quite lucky, as we were hit fairly badly in mid wales. Massive tree down just up the road and a wall at my work place has collapsed. We did have a 6 to 7 hour power cut and there's lots of flooded roads.

RhaenysRocks · 08/12/2024 07:45

Just a fence panel I think. It's going to have to wait til spring I reckon. No dogs or small children to corrale so not urgent.
