We have a very nice “young man” in the office and I have to get him a £15 secret Santa. He’s been here for 2 months, close to half my age and very easy on the eye. No idea what to get - please help me mumsnet!

Tech-related thing, like a tablet stand? The most successful present I ever got for a male friend was an Apple Air Tag, but that is over budget.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/12/2024 00:33

I googled Best Secret Santa gifts and tonnes of links and Amazon pages came up.
Don't try to be clever or funny. Just something useful and thoughtful, but not personal.
I'd pick a party game.

Seed balls.

(Of the wildflower variety - to attract the birds and the bees.)

Chocolate body paint and a candy G-string

why would you embarrass yourself? This is so weird. Imagine a 50 odd year old man asking what to get for the young ‘easy on the eye’ girl in the office. It’s just horrible.

This. It goes both ways. A couple worker of mine a good 15 years younger then the rest of us, asked us once why someone was upset an older man was hitting on then. I said ok so here I am an Jane(not her real name) and we start hitting on you. Oh James your gorgeous why don't we get some drinks send me a picture. He was 1000% horrified and said I understand perfectly now. Stop being gross.

DogSmiles · 06/12/2024 02:58

What have his looks got to do with anything? You don’t want to embarrass yourself? But if he wasn’t attractive you wouldn’t care? It sounds very creepy. My nephew had a woman acting very creepy with him at work, thankfully it was only a part time job whilst at uni so he just moved on.

WOW! first up theres a rapid firing squad response which seems to be based on the op being presumed female.I read twice age.

so (vipers) wind your neck in, for all you know @Lollollol2020 could be identifying anywhere on the gender recognition scale. (sure lou reed did lola song) also "young man"in those tiddlywinks could easily be code for -(her mames tina/but we have to pretend is harry.
ript knitting utterly excessive really...hardly pussygrabber filth level..we can im for it tho

It doesn’t matter if OP is male or female. It’s creepy to comment on a work colleagues looks in regard to buying a secret Santa gift, as though him being attractive impacts what you buy.

I was kind of hoping I’d get some secret Santa suggestions. I was trying to be light hearted but I forgot about the vipers.

sadly @Lollollol2020 given the ongoing furore with the Masterchef fool, your thread title seems a bit...crass?

I am of the opinion if we didn’t want a man saying it we shouldn’t say it either. You could mention he was younger but didn’t need the hottie descriptor

With respect to present I wouldn’t go too jokey.

Can you imagine the outrage if a male older man asked to what he should buy for the young female ‘officer hottie?’ This is so typical of MN….of course it’s double standards! So funny when it’s a woman saying, terrible if it’s a man!

not it is not funny @tuvamoodyson and the majority of pp's have also taken exception to the title/overall theme

OP was joking though whereas a man would be serious and pervy about it. That’s a massive difference to me.

Ahh I see. So describing a man half her age as the office hottie and very easy on the eye is okay if it's said as a joke...? Right ......

Yes, OP's joke is absolutely okay!

Jesus Christ, I absolutely despair at how totally innocent banter - in which, thankfully, no office hotties were harmed in any way - can cause such outrage 🙄

steponacrackbreakyourmothersback · 06/12/2024 05:50

I'd do a small basket with snacks, chocs, wine in.

Ineffable23 · 06/12/2024 05:52

If he likes wine, what about something wine adjacent that isn't wine?

So chutney, crackers and cheese if you can make it stretch far enough.

Might not work if you don't know him as they are mildly comic/amusing but they are genuinely useful: vacuvin wine saver.

Someone accidentally left a comedy corkscrew at my house after a party and it's unexpectedly the best corkscrew I've ever had. I hadn't realised how annoying a shit corkscrew was until I had a decent one.

Go festive and buy a bottle of port or similar?

Lollollol2020 · 06/12/2024 06:26

Thanks everyone … tbh I’ve never had a thread with so many replies which is kind of why I went in with the click bait title. On reflection if I thought anyone at work saw this thread I would be mortified so perhaps I was a bit heavy.. As I said earlier I’ve been around for a while and perhaps I’m still a little old school and feel I can have some jokey banter on an anonymous forum. I’ve been on the end of many Wallace type commentary myself over the years.

Never fear I’ve been on the diversity training and even if I did think of him remotely in that way (which I don’t!!) either way I know I would never do or say anything to make this guy feel uncomfortable no matter what some of you seem to think. Thanks to the people who came up with some cracking suggestions and support.

Okay then, but there's still the bale of hay option

He might think you want to roll around in it with him.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 06/12/2024 06:38

Imagine if a man said this about a younger female colleague - even in jest. People would be up in arms.

Doesn’t seem like your ‘diversity’ training was the right one, OP. Should have been SEAH.

I got a man who's newish to the office. I've got him a bottle of wine he mentioned trying and liking. for a bit of fun, Etsy have little covers for chocolate oranges that turn them into coal. I got him one of them too (and the chocolate orange).
