Tacky Christmas gardens ..

There are five terrace houses on my side of the road and three big ones opposite . We have small tiny front gardens but they are all planted up, look cared for. The one on the far end has currently just got gravel as the garden is being redone. It's bare.

The house first on the corner is a big family and they always do masses of LED mis matched multicoloured lights at Christmas. Next door to them have similar tastes but now their kids are gone it's toned down a smidge . Neither look great but it's diluted by the pretty decorations everyone one else does on our road and the opposite ones. It's all tiny white twinkly lights in the trees and nicely decorated/ lit porches.

Got home tonight to find my other next door neighbours have installed a giant inflatable snowman out front with nets of bright white lights flashing on and off. The plastic monstrosity takes the entire patch. So that's three on my row that look really brash, with me in the middle.

I don't need any lights now because both sides have lit up mine. But I'm fucked off because my row currently looks like a Channel 4 US Christmas film circa 2005. Whatever I put up is going to look unnoticed between frosty on one side and dystopian Blackpool on the other.

Complain to the council?

Sounds lush. I love a decorated garden- the more flashy and mis matched the better 😍

Are you lower middle class?

I love tacky ridiculous Christmas lights. One of our neighbours has an animatronic Santa who goes in and out of a chimney on his front lawn. DS and I stopped to gaze at it in awe on the way home from school tonight.

Would I put that in my own front garden? Fuck no, it looks terrible. Am I hugely entertained by my neighbour’s one? Yep.

mathanxiety · 04/12/2024 02:00

Get out your lentils and your knitting needles and knit some decorations to show them up. Don't take this affront lying down!

Are you lower middle class?

Yes probably.

I do have some sense of taste though ( and eyes). Nothing about an inflatabke snowman in too smaller space looks good.
Likewise the fat multi coloured LEDs isn't warm and festive but more fairground. Added together with bight white winter lights on some walls and warm white ( orange) on others, it just looks terrible.

Handcraft a massive wicker Father Christmas and then set it alight on Christmas Eve, while dancing around it strewing tasteful poinsettia petals - that's what I'd do.

@BrimFire taste is subjective though isn't it? Just because you have different tastes to your neighbours doesn't make yours superior.

Spagettifunctional · 06/12/2024 20:55

Ughhh

glad we live out in the countryside 😂😂😂

For goodness sake leave them alone to enjoy Christmas how they see fit (outdoor lights or not). Next year go round your neighbours doors and give them a list of acceptable decorations to put outside their home so they don’t offend your eyes.

LittleBobbyDazzler · 06/12/2024 20:56

We currently have this monstrosity hanging on the front door instead of a wreath. (Ours doesn't look like it has cataracts though). Warms my heart to know someone will be stewing about our tacky decorations 😂

I have a light up acrylic gnome outside my front door, I LOVE it.
We live in a 5 bed house on a gated estate.. just saying!

Janedoe82 · 06/12/2024 20:59

So funny. I work in a deprived council estate and I LOVE leaving at night as the houses all look so class and so much effort has been made. Huge trees and loads of inflatables! Sure who is it harming!

PortiasBiscuit · 06/12/2024 21:00

I also have a Hama bead wreath on the front door.

BerriesCones · 06/12/2024 21:00

Maybe they put the inflatable snowman out for children to enjoy seeing rather than you?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/12/2024 21:01

Ooh there's a house near me ( near enough that I can make a detour to see but not on my way home)
You can see their decoration from Space I reckon.

I think they get some professional company in as every year they're different and you wouldn't break, replace, buy or have room to store all these .
I do feel a bit sorry for their neighbours it must be like living in a disco.

We will drive past it tomorrow , I will instruct my family to (in the words of Bart Simpson) "Prepare to be dazzled"

OriginalUsername2 · 06/12/2024 21:02

A tasteful Christmas is so boring. I had one after my separation from DCs father, I wanted my home to look like a magazine. There was no magic at all!

It should be tacky and messy, clashing and bright. 80’s Santas Grotto vibes all the way!

allthatfalafel · 06/12/2024 21:10

Far too late for you to be putting anything Christmas up now, it's time to start thinking about Easter.
