Unknown music artists that everyone must listen to

I'm bored of my Spotify playlist and need something new to listen to who isn't a mainstream artist. I turn to Mumsnet wisdom to recommend me music from any genre.

Gregory Alan Isakov
Amble

Would also say Ren. “Bardcore” is how he’s been described and I think it’s definitely accurate, although he also does so much more!

A couple of others which are probably better known are:
She drew the gun (howl is one if my current favourites)
Laura Mvula

Yussef Dayes- Two songs, Marching Band and Sicily Box, are firm favourites.

The Cavemen- Adaugo is a beautiful song

Badbadnotgood- Alien Love Call is my favourite song of theirs

Boom Clap Bachelors- Tiden Flyver is my favourite

Outside the UK, he’s well known and does have a following here I’m sure, but Sufjan Stevens, who’s been around a long time, is one of my all time favourites. His Christmas albums are played year round in my house.

I discovered his Christmas album in the last few years as well.

(Jamie Callum’s Christmas album, ‘The Pianoman at Christmas’ is worth listening to also, and I’m not even a jazz fan).

I completely forgot ADMT even though he's my top Spotify artist for the second year running.

Man Now, Prison, and North are amazing

Hardly "unknown"

Well, I thought that for a moment, then reflected that everything’s unknown until it isn’t. Best not be hipsters about it.

PricklyBob · 04/12/2024 15:43

Not as unknown as they used to be but Japanese Breakfast deserve a lot more recognition.

Cowboy Junkies. Canadian band, they’ve been going a long time, and I kinda had heard of them but never listened to them - they popped up on Spotify doing a cover of Thunder Road, and I have been hooked ever since.

Amandasummers · 04/12/2024 15:45

ren gets my vote too! I also like “NF”

CMOTDibbler · 04/12/2024 16:00

Different genres
Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes (punk)
Whiskey Myers (country/ southern rock)
Michael Monroe (he's far from unknown, as he's been playing since 1979 but one of those people who never became the superstar he should have been and is incredible, Ranges from soft punk to rock) - saw him live last week and at 62 he still has the energy, range and showmanship that he did at 22

GalacticTowelMaster · 04/12/2024 16:28

Yard Act

I8toys · 04/12/2024 20:17

Trash Boat, Trophy Eyes, Boston Manor, The Deep Blue

@Amandasummers I agree with NF

Mt Joy. A quirky folk rock kind of band. A friend introduced me to them and I happened to be on a business trip in her city and went to a concert with her
