I'm bored of my Spotify playlist and need something new to listen to who isn't a mainstream artist. I turn to Mumsnet wisdom to recommend me music from any genre.

Yussef Dayes- Two songs, Marching Band and Sicily Box, are firm favourites.

The Cavemen- Adaugo is a beautiful song

Badbadnotgood- Alien Love Call is my favourite song of theirs

Boom Clap Bachelors- Tiden Flyver is my favourite

Outside the UK, he’s well known and does have a following here I’m sure, but Sufjan Stevens, who’s been around a long time, is one of my all time favourites. His Christmas albums are played year round in my house.

Jeannie Lewis - an Australian legend in the alternative music scene. Extraordinary voice.

I know they’re fairly well known but London Grammar are listenable.

Tom McGuire and the Brassholes. Ric Flair is a particular favourite of mine as it cheers me up but they are great.

Your Majesty
Your Majesty are a Brighton based band not got many songs out but if you like blues influenced rock definitely worth checking out.

He's not very well known but Gary Clark Jnr. Husband saw him live a few years back and he is amazing.

Teskey Brothers are good too.

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, well worth a listen

His recent videos of him doing old songs, guy is an absolute talent, multi talent in fact

Imicola · 03/12/2024 22:34

Cosmo Sheldrake. Very different and some of it I find so beautiful and uplifting. Nightjar is one of my favourites.

I love this thread, I'm going to give some of them a listen in the morning!

Grumpykittens · 03/12/2024 22:41

Madison Cunningham is an actual goddess.

Sam Brookes. I discovered him in 2018 and have followed him ever since. He has the most amazing voice.
This song recently featured in the new Day of The Jackal show.

Lamelie · 03/12/2024 23:03

You’ll recognise some songs by Tom Rosenthal and Phosphorescent, Matthew Houck but they both have massive back catalogues, well worth a deep dive.

ilovecardigans · 03/12/2024 23:11

The Virginmarys. Two Macclesfield lads who deserve every success in the world - hugely talented, humble grafters who are currently on the European leg of their album tour. Check out The House Beyond the Fires on Spotify.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 03/12/2024 23:15

The Chase - (a small, but fantastic band from Nottingham).
The K's
Only The Poets
Lock-in
The Clause
The DMAs
The Lathums

Dylan John Thomas

taxguru · 03/12/2024 23:22

Not unknown as such but I’ve been going back to the 60s and 70s on Spotify as I was too young the first time and have “re” discovered some fabulous artists such as Karen Carpenter and Helen Reddy and a host of others such as glam rock.

SophieStrange · 03/12/2024 23:23

Rosalie Cunningham is a great choice; I love Two Piece Puzzle. She had a band called Purson before she went solo, who were a bit heavier.

if you like her sort of stuff, you might also try Blood Ceremony, who are in the same folky-psychedelic-metal with female vocals space.

eekwhatnow · 04/12/2024 07:56

Thanks. Lots here that's new to me. I've got a few that I love and think are probably fairly unknown. A few different genres.

Emmy the great
Tommy lefroy
The Japanese house
Adam melchor
Finn Forster
The wave pictures
Cassia
Sammy copley

eekwhatnow · 04/12/2024 08:01

Oh, and Gabriels! Not sure how unknown they are but they're great.
