I don’t think modern “debutante balls” have anything to do with the old sort, which ended over half a century ago.

Modern ones are just for rich Russians and Chinese to mix with impoverished Euro posh. Apple as there as part of a tie in with Vogue (and probably being paid an appearance fee). Don’t think she’s looking for a husband 😂

yeah vogue do a tie in with a celeb offspring most years, which is why we even hear about it.

and i think it raises money for charity.

as much as it doesn't fit with his "image" I imagine if his daughter wanted to do it he would support her as most would. she isn't doing a crime. just being a bit gauche

That photo of Blythe Danner wearing an actual beret in actual Paris just adds to the massive cringe factor. The whole thing is like that Paris episode of Sex and the City, which poked fun (I hope?) at the fairytale vs real life delusion.

I wonder if it's a nod to that SATC episode? Perhaps it's meant to be funny.

Imagine having all the access to great schools, nannies, any help you need, and still your kid turns out like that.

That's what I think when I look at the Beckham kids, every advantage that money and contacts can obtain and yet they all seem to be going down the "sell you life to the media" as a career choice.

They have exploited their children for the sake of their silly ‘brand’, it’s tragic.

I wonder what the parents of her "date" think? He's a European count, so from old-old money.
She's the half yank daughter of an actress and a fading pop star. Ultimate "new money".

fading pop star?
He's the lead singer of Coldplay, one of the biggest bands in the world who do sell out gigs in stadiums! 🤣🤣

You do you, it’s up to them, right?
What is weird, is sharing it on social media and not expecting to come in for some criticism.

re: Beckhams, Brooklyn has married ‘well’ & it looks like a love match. Good for them.

The last debutantes were presented at the Court of St James's in 1958, after which Queen Elizabeth II abolished the ceremony; Princess Margaret, the Queen's sister, acidly remarked, "We had to put a stop to it. Every tart in London was getting in"

Can’t get too worked up about these - they are usually massive fundraiser events raising tens, if not, hundreds of thousands for charity whilst doing something that is really quite sweet.

I remember reading about a recent health scare for BD, so I would charitably read it as them doing something fun to make a beloved 80-something grandmother very happy.

The daughter of Chris Martina and Gywneth Paltrow was never going to stuggle in life, but I'm not sure attending a tacky 'society ball' equates to 'doing very nicely for herself'.

I was actually being tongue in cheek.

I thought Chris Martin was all about equality and make poverty history? All sits a bit uncomfortably with me.

He went to public school, though? No idea if he was a boarder, but his school is one of the only four full time boys boarding schools left - along with Eton, Harrow and Radley.

Princess Margaret amused me, she had no shits to give.

Just gonna objectify him to ... ahem.... make a point about sexism.

Exactly. I was absolutely gobsmacked to see his daughter involved in this ! What on earth are they thinking of?

Onlyonekenobe · 02/12/2024 16:51

What a load of bollocks. These people behave as though they're royalty, the layers of irony of which aren't worth the effort of deciphering. Pity the idiots feeding their egos and lining their pockets.

SusannaNW9 · 02/12/2024 16:52

Goes to show the limits of what money can buy. It can’t buy class that’s for sure.

babyproblems · 02/12/2024 16:52

I thought Apple was most famous for bullying a fellow pupil to the brink of suicide?
Agree it’s creepy and the whole image of the girls dressed circa the 16thC being ‘presented’ seems really out of place in 2024! Or does it show how big the gap between rich & poor (eg the rest of us all) is. I do wonder if we’ve all been brainwashed really to the benefit of the very few who live a very very different and privileged life..

Patienceinshortsupply · 02/12/2024 16:57

Chris Martin has an estimated net worth of £160 million... not bad for a "fading pop star". Gwyneth has a net worth of $200 million so they're pretty much equal.

I saw Coldplay a couple of weeks ago in NZ - it was a great concert but we had to watch a 20 min video montage about how green the tour was. Felt like greenwashing when you saw all the containers and lorries, unnecessary ballloons, fireworks and plastic wristwatches given to audience for lighting.
There were also extended periods of local Māori dance and music with and announcements done in both languages. I felt a bit cynical about how much was done to bolster Chris Martin’s image as opposed to being a genuine attempt to personalise the show for the audience ( and it was enjoyable) . He looked wildly pleased with himself during it all.
Maybe he has lost the plot slightly - I can’t imagine my DH ever agreeing to attend such an event with our DD whether we were multimillionaires or not!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 02/12/2024 17:00

It’s a tradition I primarily know from Vienna.

I’m already looking forward to this year’s ball season (which has andkitt already begun where I live, but I didn’t have time). What’s so bad about this? I’m sure she wasn’t forced to participate 🤷‍♀️

User37482 · 02/12/2024 17:04

Lips look verrry strange… anyhoo it’s just rich people being rich.
